“Apple is readying an upgraded version of its iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Maps application for the next major release of iOS in an effort to battle Google for mobile maps supremacy, according to sources briefed on the plans,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.
“Apple CEO Tim Cook, Senior Vice Presidents Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi, and Maps head Patrice Gautier are using the new app to move toward fulfilling a promise to users that the iOS Maps application will eventually live up to the ‘incredibly high standard’ of Apple’s customers,” Gurman reports. “Thanks to extensive engineering work and acquisitions of several companies such BroadMap, Embark, and HopStop, Apple’s database for iOS Maps will be upgraded with enhanced data so it is more reliable, according to sources.”
Gurman reports, “In addition to the mapping data changes, Apple will add one of the most important mobile features to Maps this year: public transit directions.”

I thought the Maps database would have been continuously updated as Apple acquired additional mapping companies. Why would database updates be dependent on update of the app? What am I missing?
Exactly my thought. The data is on the server, they don’t need to update the app to update the data.
The database is continuously updated, but the app needs code added to it to be able to handle any new features (like subway and bus routes).
I would like an alternative routing option to avoid interstates.
Also I would like for them to move the pin 30 ft to get my home mailbox in the right spot. I have sent feedback and reported it 4 times now…it says my home is 30 ft across the street at my neighbors house.

I already find Apple maps more useful than google maps. Roads change a lot in Australia and google is a bit “this is how it used to be”. Directions are absolutely useless. Apple maps are more up to date. They had a sketchy start which has tarnished them in the view of many.
Is it just me? The map apps I used when the iPhone was brand new seemed to have better and more accurate information than any of them do today…? How and why? Both Apple and Google maps were totally stumped when I was driving my motorhome across the states and searched for “RV”. Thought I’d find cool places to stay, no… I get a country in the middle of Africa with the initials RV. WTF?
The real question is which app gave you better driving directions.
might just be me…but the main reason i go to google maps is for traffic. i like seeing the green…even though it clutters it up….i feel confident that its a good way to go. Also, not seeing the green on apple maps makes me feel like it might be traffic.
I have noticed lately that Apple Maps’ traffic info is very up to date, and the little accident or road construction icons are not only unobtrusive, but accurate and current. Much better than what Google Maps was.
What Maps on iOS 8 had better change:
Make ‘Report a Problem’ actually work. I have wasted my time sending report after report and *not one* of my corrections changed the map.
Building detail. We recently went to the Hunter Art Museum in Chattanooga.
Check for yourself. In Apple Maps it’s a little blue dot in the middle of empty space. On Google maps not only is the building outline shown but the two floors are detailed, with all the exhibits listed.
Here’s the point: Maps/Search are what Google do.
Maps ARE NOT what Apple does. And it shows.

Why would Apple take a single report and change their map database? Imagine the fun Samsung would have paying their fans to start submitting bogus map changes!
In my state the “highway hero” hotline doesn’t act on a teleport of a motorist legally using the High Occupancy Vehicle lane until 40 reports have been logged on that license plate!
