Former Apple CEO John Sculley to launch smartphone brand in India

“Former Apple CEO John Sculley is planning on launching a new smartphone brand in India,” Rajat Agrawal reports for BGR India. “The yet unnamed brand will be led by Ajay Sharma, who was heading Micromax’s smartphone division and was also at one time HTC’s India head.”

“The brand is being funded by Singapore-based Inflexionpoint, an investment and acquisition [firm], which also happens to have Sculley as one of its founding partners,” Agrawal reports. “The smartphones being developed will be priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 15,000 [approximately US$80-$245], but in a market currently flooded with smartphones from local brands and tier-one brands alike, it is unclear how these smartphones will be able to differentiate itself from the competition.”

MacDailyNews Take: With any luck, and for the sake of accuracy, the brand name will be कबाड़.

  1. कबाड़ = Junk. Good one MDN!

Seriously, this guy is obviously seeing a cash cow over there, otherwise he wouldn’t be associating his name with it. I’m not saying it will be a successful smartphone, I’m just saying this will be a successful deal for him. Know what I mean?

  2. This is good news because the junk phone to be offered in India by the junk Scully belongs there, Apple should stay out of India as its a cheap market not worth pursuing.

  3. John has been a successful investor in many different fields. He has mentored many young people who have gone on to be successful in their own right. None of you who feel the need to say something nasty have ever met John, worked with John, been in the board room at Apple or know anything other than what you read on the web. Do you really believe everything on the web is true? Wouldn’t it be better to say nothing if you can’t say something nice when none of you have any idea what you are talking about.

  4. When Sculley left Apple the company was making money. Did you know there were two ceos after Sculley? Steve Jobs was fired by the board not John . The facts are out there if you look for them

    1. Diane, the faithful are in the Jobs camp and have drunk the Kool-Aid. The only thing that could conceivably change their perception is a memoir by John. I, for one, would buy the first edition of that book.

I still prefer Coke, but I never judge people by my predilections.
