Having revolutionised personal communication Apple now wants to change the way we drive,” Henry Foy and Daniel Thomas report for Financial Times. “The technology group will next week launch its first in-car operating system with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo as it attempts to take the lead in a fierce race to dominate tomorrow’s smart cars.”
Foy and Thomas report, “The deal marks the first time that Apple is embedding its software in devices other than its own branded products.”
MacDailyNews Take: Incorrect. HP-branded iPod, for example. For another, Siri Eyes Free is already in Chevy, Honda and Acura vehicles. AirPlay compatible audio equipment. iPod vehicle integration.
“The choice of the Ferrari, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz is seen to be in keeping with the US tech group’s high-end phones,” Foy and Thomas report. “Apple’s head of internet software and services, Eddy Cue, joined the Ferrari board in 2012, saying at the time that he had ‘personally dreamed of owning a Ferrari since I was 8 years old and have been lucky to be an owner for the past 5 years.'”
“The official announcement of Apple’s deal will be made at next week’s Geneva Motor Show, sources told the Financial Times,” Foy and Thomas report. “A number of other manufacturers are expected to incorporate it into models in 2014.”

This guy doesn’t understand the auto industry at all. The reason Ferrari, MB and Volvo are the first to release cars with iOS in the Car is because the are releasing new/updated models early. Most auto releases are in the summer/fall. This has nothing to do with Apple “choosing” those manufacturers, and everything to do with those manufacturers fitting iOS in the Car into their production schedules.

First of all, letting you know I am a apple user but I also work at Audi. I think you make your statement too soon especially about apple map! Let’s see how it goes. Audi is not crying just in case if you don’t know.
yes it may be too soon but the fact remains, Audi make a high end car targeted at people who have money to spare. Most of which are likely the type of people who don’t want a car with software embedded made the worlds largest privacy invading advertising corporation.
He probably works as a polisher at an Audi dealership so is no doubt at the very centre of the policy making of the organisation. Don’t know about you but I am quivering at his every Earth Shattering Corporate announcement.

I started buying Audi at about the same time the iPhone came out. I’ve always been a little bit disappointed in the Bluetooth integration with the MMI multimedia system in my A6 (2008), for example I can no longer connect via Bluetooth with my iPhone 5s… That being said, and to quote Horace Dediu (asymco.com) cars could now being considered as smartphone accessories. Audi choosing Android as the platform for their future on-board system is in my opinion a mistake. I will look for alternatives when the time comes to change car.
Fact is Audi has always been the poor mans quality car for those who can’t really afford a Merc or BMW so their choice is probably very appropriate for their market.
When I bought my Audis, I chose them over Mercedes and BMW not because of price, because there was little to no difference, but because other factors such as Quattro, styling, cockpit and gauges, etc.
Similar you say… And yet you forget the big difference THE MARQUE.
Mercedes is the Marque for choice for the most successful people around the world.

Try a Rolls or Bentley or Bugatti or Lamborghini or Austin Martin or a myriad of other “high priced spreads” before you acclaim the Merc as “choice” – THE MARQUE.

A BMW is fine if you live somewhere where it never snows, otherwise you have to change tyres or use chains, to stop your shiny new toy becoming a driveway queen.
I’d have a VAG car over anything made by BMW any day of the week; that includes Bentley, Lamborghini, Audi, (who, as Auto Union, have as proud a racing heritage as Bentley), Skoda, etc.
I’ll put an Audi RS6 up against any BMW for sheer quality.

My iPhones have always connected flawlessly in the 2 Bentleys I have owned.
I should have pointed out that my current iPhone is a 5s.
I’ve owned three Audis and I will not be getting a fourth until Android is out of there.

Since cars can last quite a while, I’m wondering how updates will be implemented. Will it involve swapping out the hardware equivalent of an iPad every couple of years? Will the car eventually outlast the iOS system?

I’ll be getting a new Jeep spring of 2015 when the lease on my current Jeep ends. I hope this will be available for Jeep by then. UConnect is ok, but has some major shortfalls. Mainly lack of Bluetooth integration with other apps. Plus I’d rather have the SIRI voice over what UConnect uses.
I have been hankering for a Tesla. But damn it, just cannot fathom them going with droid. The top tech car in the world. For me it is like they are going with square wheels. Audi too.
