Apple to again expand North Carolina data center

“Apple is adding to its data center campus again,” Sharon McBrayer reports for The Hickory Daily Record.

“Less than two years after it added a smaller tactical data center to its behemoth 500,000-square-foot data center, Apple is adding another,” McBrayer reports. “An erosion permit for a new data center at the tech giant’s Maiden data center was filed Wednesday with Catawba County. Plans filed with the county for the data center say it will be 14,246 square feet and 25 feet tall. It will be made of precast concrete wall panels along steel columns.”

“Like the previous tactical data center, plans for the new one shows banks of computers in the main portion of it and 11 air units to cool it. Two more air units will supply the office and other occupied area of the data center,” McBrayer reports. “The previous tactical data center, which was built in 2012, is 21,030 square feet and sits to the side and rear of the main data center. The newest building will be located behind the larger tactical data center.”

“Scott Millar, president of Catawba County Economic Development Corporation, said it seems that data center owners are hesitant to build larger-scale data centers. It appears companies are moving toward data center that can be put up quickly to meet current needs, Millar said,” McBrayer reports. “Millar said he thinks companies are looking toward doing data centers in chunks rather than the massive data centers.”

  1. I think writer meant an operations centre. The guys who maintain apple’s matrix of data wharehouses and corporate networks.

I’d love to have a look at how they’ve designed they’re routing and switching architecture.

    I bet it’s awesome (I’m a network/security guy)
