“Apple Inc.’s iOS smartphone operating system gained ground in the U.S. in the final quarter of 2013 as the share of the market served by the platforms of Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and BlackBerry Ltd. shrank,” Gerrit De Vynck reports for Bloomberg.
“The market share of Google’s Android operating system slipped 0.3 percentage point to 51.5 percent as Apple gained 1.2 percentage points to end the year with almost 42 percent of the market, ComScore Inc. said,” De Vynck reports. “BlackBerry, which recently hired Foxconn Group to build its devices, fell 0.4 percentage point to 3.4 percent, while Microsoft declined 0.2 percentage point to 3.1 percent.”
“The release of Apple’s new high-end iPhone 5S and the cheaper 5C for the holidays put pressure on competing phones at multiple price points, Bloomberg Industries analysts John Butler and Joshua Yatskowitz said in a Jan. 31 report,” De Vynck reports. “Google’s Android system runs on devices made by multiple companies including Samsung, LG Electronics Inc. and HTC Corp. Apple’s iPhone is the only smartphone running the company’s operating system.”
“The iPhone is the most popular phone in the U.S. with 41.8 percent of users,” De Vynck reports. “Samsung ended the year with 26.1 percent.”

Important note that is almost always omitted is that “installed base” such as this — that includes all connected to cellular networks phones however long ago they were purchased in the past — is totally different thing from new sales market share.
Correct but for the installed base to increase for Apple, an increase in sales in the last quarter must have occurred (unless of course a lot of competitor units were retired).
That is increase comparing to long-time installed base proportions, not quarter over quarter.
I think it’s funny that Windows is still lower than Blackberry. It was going to be the end of the iPhone, if I remember correctly. They can’t get into the business market, the one they dominate with the PC. That Nokia deal looks real good now.
Just recently it had been claimed that Windows Phone market share would easily surpass iPhone market share by 2017, so Apple still has to watch its back. All Microsoft has to do is keep selling those $100 Windows Phone smartphones to emerging nations and it might be possible to gain huge amounts of market share if that’s what’s important to them.
This has been calmed since MS came out with WP7. This article is about the US, however other study’s have showed WP behind worldwide. Behind Blackberry. There is a belief that Windows dominance was because it was open, and cheeper. There was a lot of other factors. Mostly Apple imploding and MS’s strict OEM rules. Now it is very different. MS has to fight Android and Blackberry for emerging markets, and they were late to the game. It is low hanging fruit anyways. The long term profit and market share come from the business sector in developed nations. The fact that MS is intrenched in developed nations with their PC’s and can’t leverage it for their phones says a lot about MS’s troubles. It also shows how misguided the experts that backed WP were. I’ve not heard one come out and say that they were wrong, and why. If Blackberry is not worried about $100.00 WP phones, than why should Apple.
Nobody cares. Apple’s stock is still seen as toxic.
