“Google Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which are frequently involved in patent infringement lawsuits but not against each other, announced on Sunday that they have reached a global patent cross-licensing agreement,” Diane Bartz reports for Reuters.
“The deal covers patents currently owned by the companies, as well as any filed in the next 10 years, the companies said in a release. Financial terms were not disclosed,” Bartz reports. “The companies said the deal ‘would lead to deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future projects.'”
Bartz reports, “Samsung’s Seungho Ahn, head of the company’s intellectual property center, said the deal showed ‘the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.'”

Google are all for openness and transparency when it comes to products and tech that other companies run their business by, but google search and ad targeting logarithms are top secret and/or patented. Thats why other search engine utilising googles search algorithm have “enhanced by Google” next to the search box i.e. yahoo
If privacy laws ever come into effect, that are actually enforced and have punishments that are greater than the profit gained by ignoring them, google will be in a bad place. But we all know google have deep bribery pockets and I don’t see this happening within my lifetime.

While I understand that Apple fans are fed up with the lies and slander other companies-mostly Microsoft- has slinger at Apple, I don’t see how constructive it is to throw mud at Google, who actually are just as innovative as Apple. At least they aren’t downright dirty liars like Microsoft. Face it, if Apple did indeed come up with smart glasses, and self-driving cars, everyone here would be praising them, and how creative Apple is for coming up with that.
Man, I hate to say this but Google Maps is still better than Apple Maps. Apple Maps is making glacial progress as far as filling in the blanks with POI (points of interest) is concerned. It’s like they lost interest in Apple Maps.
That is what I meant though. I believe that Google has created some quality products, such as Maps and Google Earth. I am not afraid to say that I use Gmail as my client too. While I love Apple, you can’t ignore the fact that Google has came up with some great tech…and they are still several leagues above Microsoft. I would rather use Android over any version on Windows.
Let’s get real here:
Google BOUGHT what became Google Earth, from which they started their maps business. Apple, meanwhile, started their Maps app from scratch.
And YES! That’s exactly how Microsoft ‘created’ most of their software as well: Bought.
Get a grip Chris. Neither of these 2 so called innovations by google are new. I had smart glasses when I was 10, only then they were called X-ray glasses, and yes guys wearing them were id’d rightfully as pervs. Nothing’s changed except now everything the pervs oogle is sent to the master perv’s server for use as they choose… Great innovation! Oh! And FYI self driving cars have been toyed with for the last 20 years. We’re just waiting for the infrastructure to be laid to take advantage of the tech.

Google aren’t “coming up with” self-driving cars or VR glasses. A huge amount of research has been done on self-driving vehicles over many years now. For example, see this information on the DARPA challenge – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA_Grand_Challenge.
Awesome, google is acquiring artificial intelligence companies to build their own skynet and the terminators will be built by samsung. Difference being, instead of wiping out the human race we will be restrained in captivity and forced to watch ads. On the good side, the software will be made by google so it won’t work very and the hardware will be made by samsung so it will be easy to break and avoid capture
Google and Samsung need each other. Samsung is the only company making a profit selling Android phones and tablets. Without Samsung, Android looks like a joke. And without Google, Samsung has no OS (unless they can make that Tizen thing work, which is questionable).

Actually, they have made a couple of Windows 8 tablets, and some Windows phones. They quit, though, because MS’s Terms of Agreements still says that if they make a Windows product, they can not make a product that runs on a competitors operating system. That’s probably the only positive thing to come from Microsoft’s Golden Age of Illegal Trusts of the 1990s.
Tizen apparently ‘works’. But so far, no mobile companies wants to market the resulting devices. It’s a dead end. I think ScamScum has figured that out. Thus their embracing and extending the Google crap, specifically Android OS. That’s a horrifying compromise. At this point, Android has poorer security than Windows. A well deserved graft-job, of the real and pun varieties.
As far as I’m concerned the Android genie is already out of the bottle. There is no way anyone can put the genie back in the bottle now, short of Steve Jobs coming back from the dead and turning back time like Superman.
It’s a natural progression that Samsung & Google will want to ‘protect their intellectual property’ by cross-licensing their patents.
The one thing is I hope they don’t go crying to the courts if some upstart smartphone or tablet manufacturer rips off their patents, in which case the party doing the copying can point to the ongoing case between Apple and Samsung as a guide on how to rip off patent holders.
You can rip off patent holders as long as you have money to keep the court in play.
That sounds strange to me. Are you defending this Samsung/Google joint partnership. I understand that you may still be upset over the iOS7 fiasco, but that does not mean you can act rebellious and join “the dark side” as a way to stick it to Apple. If you hate iOS 7’s aesthetic looks, fine, but you don’t have to act like a bratty teen about it.
I’m saying that that as far as Android goes, you cannot push Android back in time to the date of its creation and prevent its eventual development and along the way prevent its main promoters, Samsung & Google, from protecting their intellectual property.
On the other hand, if some new smartphone or tablet manufacturer rips off Google & Samsung IP, then it would be justifiable seeing how Samsung & Google ripped off Apple’s iPhone IP.
As long as you can keep the parties in play in court, you’ll get away with it. And yes, I still hate iOS 7.

Well, no, Apple can’t make Android go away. But they can make it less profitable to manufacture Android phones of the caliber that compete with the iPhone. If Apple ends up winning this war, Android will be relegated to cheap, crap devices and true iPhone competitors will have to use something else.

This deal is probably just a BS agreement where Samsung and Google supposedly agree to pay large (cancelling amounts) licensing fees for each others FRAND patents, in order to convince the courts that Apple should overpay for standards essential patents.

The agreement is for one thing, so samdung has access to Moto patents. The only problem is Moto patents are no longer relevant. The most interesting aspect is Apple now has an opening to go directly at gaggle. Tim, unleash the hounds!
This is just for “show”. They want the world to think they are “mature” (for lack of a better word). What they really mean to say is “oh shit, we can’t win any patent fights lets act as if patents should all be shared”.
