Apple tonight debuted a new 90-second television ad, “Misunderstood,” for the holiday season.
The ad soundtrack features music and nat. sound (natural sound) an focuses on an extended family, “the Harris family,” getting together to celebrate Christmas.
The touching ad closes on the text “Happy Holidays” which cuts to the Apple logo.

And here’s the video that the ad was based on:
Apple – Holiday – A Harris family holiday

I like it.
Happy Holidays to all.
Merry Christmas to you too Mejsric! 🙂
And a very Merry Christmas to all.
It has been a very long time coming. This ad was both informative, entertaining, and emotionally touching. Most that do not own an iOS device will not fully understand all that was done. Recording it, using iTunes music in it, editing it, then AirPlay it in same day to an AppleTV.
Just pure Apple!
Merry Christmas!
The reason people may not be impressed as much as they should be, is that they’re numbed watching CSI-style TV series with super-high-tech control rooms with instant access to images, to image analysis, etc., using just a few voice commands or meaningless clicks, too vague to even contain enough information to specify the task to be executed. They see outright witchery/wizardry all day, and hardly notice Apple devices actually doing similar things for real…
What’s wrong with saying Merry Christmas?
What’s wrong with saying Happy Holidays?
Merry Christmas should have been used because the story of the TV ad was about a extended family’s CHRISTMAS get together. Apple needs to do one for other holidays and in other countries all year long.
So, where is the 64-bit speed crushing ad? Lets spend a few million and put some pressure on the old school me-too devices! And Tim and the Apple board, if you don’t want to say “Merry Christmas” than don’t use the rest of Christmas in the ad. Idiots. Man up. People don’t want to see your PC insecurities about the Christian holiday you are trying to sell your devices in.
“Happy Holidays” is perfectly fine.
If you’re talking about Groundhog Day.
nice.
I don’t get it 🙁
LMFAO
That was 90 seconds I will never get back. Is this even representative of America today? Shouldn’t they have heeded the travel advisories?
It rang my bell, at least. I had a dodgy family, a lot going on. I suppose no story ever presented could be representative — but for me, the dart hit the target.
I’m not sure what you mean by dodgy family but I grew up with 20, 30, 40 direct family members showing up and having that type of day. We are all scattered to the winds and the parents have passed on so it will never be the same but the commercial to me seemed a bit Courier & Ives. So put on. like they all should have arrived in sleighs with bells jingling being pulled by reindeers.
It’s an Apple commercial I will fast forward through and I almost never fast forward through and Apple commercial.
I do understand your point of view, and it’s one I might have expressed myself, not that long ago. But sometimes, a memory gets jogged and a long-buried feeling wells up. For me, this was one of those times.
Peace.
Peace.
I think December is 31 days you’ll never get back. 😉
Maybe next year Apple will have a commercial featuring a white male homosexual couple with a half dozen adopted kids that are black, oriental and hispanic. I’m sure that would make you happy.
You don’t have a clue what would make me happy. It seems like I’m not the only one that found the commercial lacking.
It was like Norman Rockwell meets MySpace covered in syrup. High fructose corn syrup no less. Granma and granpa just happened to have an Apple TV to boot out there in the middle of nowhere with dial up internet probably.
LIghten up. It seemed syrupy and really striving too hard for the message.
You’ve shown us that being a jerk-off is what makes you happy. You must be happy a lot.
I’m being lectured by an anonymous douche.
I’ll give you a free clue. Opininions are like a-holes. We all have one.
Surprise, surprise.. I have one.
citizenX, triumph said your 90 seconds was nothing more than something to poop on, anyway.
Spare me the ignorant and pathetic comment. You don’t know me and you don’t know what I like to poop on and why. You do not have a clue.
for u citizenx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHa7iQJ_fEw
Your supposed to believe that all those kids with their heads buried in their phones are actually doing something creative rather than living life? Give me a break.
Misunderstood
This commercial made me cry… I’ve never cried over a commercial. I think apple did a great job at showing us that this is a new age of technology. Don’t judge these kids. Yes he’s different. We all have one of those in our family.
Maybe Aldo’s right but I can think of many Christmases past and loves lost that I’d give anything for a ninety second video shot in an unobtrusive way by one of the “goofball” loners in my family. 🙂
Amen, maybe Aldo is just missing out on the power of being connected to people and to life. Poor guy.
I guess I must have a heart, after all.
You always did!! Merry Christmas 🙂
Bless you and everyone that feels the spirit of Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Hannah!
Thanks MDN for the iPhone App update. Love it!!!
Agree, great app update!
iPhone 5s
Lovely, sentimental new Apple Christmas commercial. I was most intrigued by the 70-inch (or so) HD display featured in a scene in the den. Black bezel, no logo branding. Could it be a 4K Apple television?
Happy Saturnalia!
Whoa…
Just had a nasty flashback to my misspent youth and all those years filled with hours and hours and hours studying Latin.
Not good. This doesnt click like Samsung/Google’s video ads, who now look more Apple-esque than Apple’s, if they just featured iPhones instead.
Maybe it should change ad firm or get more progressist ones onboard. Inhouse production cannot progress without competition.
Samsung & Scroogle have no new ideas that’s why they mimics Apple instead of branding their own ID commercials.
The video on the family’s TV WAS created by the family on their Apple iPhone 5s. Apple loved it & shot the rest of commercial with the Harris family.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Loved it. Nice way to remind people to look up from their phones so they don’t miss anything. Wonderful surprise that the kid wasn’t a screen zombie like so many others are.
Wonderful !
maudlin rubbish. I swear to God Apple is getting to be gayer and gayer all the time reflecting its CEO’s preference for butt pirate poker.
And to think that you have the temerity to capitalize the G in “God” whilst parading your potty-mouth and bigoted soul in the same sentence.
@What a load – It’s going to be okay. Just open the closet door, and step out of the self-repression.
well that certainly peeled a layer of crust off my heart. As the late Bob Hope sang, Thanks for the memories!
Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!
Had tears in my eyes, it works!
Apple should run this spot a lot.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
HoHoHo !
👍👍👍👍👍
Happy Festivus Everyone! Festivus for the rest of us. Give this post five start and I will donate $5 to the human fund.
You can always count on CNET as a platform for iHaters to completely MISUNDERSTAND the MISUNDERSTOOD theme ad from Apple.
Merry Christmas (to everyone who celebrates it)!
And to those who hate Christmas (liberals), you’re on your own.
Poor taste!!!
Please watch “HOME” and do another ad!!!
Really cheesy insensitive kitsch!!!
…and those less fortunate this Christmas????????
