Apple tops Dell for first time as most popular brand for PCs

Parks Associates announced new research today showing Apple has expanded its dominance this year as the top CE brand for planned holiday purchases, topping Dell for the first time as the most popular brand for desktops. Apple is also the top brand for tablets, laptops, smartphones, home networking routers, MP3 players, and streaming media devices (Apple TV).

“Apple topped the list of intended brands for desktop purchases for the first time this year,” said John Barrett, director, Consumer Analytics, Parks Associates, in a statement. “In 2011 and 2012, Dell was the top desktop brand, but Apple has displaced it, making Apple now the most popular brand across even more key CE categories.”

The research shows the top-five intended brands for desktops:

1. Apple
2. Dell
3. HP
4. Acer
5. Asus

The most popular brands among tablet shoppers are as follows:

1. Apple
2. Amazon
3. Samsung
4. Microsoft
5. Acer

For streaming media devices, top brands are the following:

1. Apple
2. Roku
3. Buffalo
4. D-Link (Boxee Box)
5. NETGEAR

Parks Associates released research last month showing Sony beats Microsoft for game console purchase intentions this holiday season. Samsung is the top brand for flat-panel TVs, and Amazon is the top e-book reader brand.

2013 Holiday CE Purchase Intentions features consumer research from a nationwide survey of 2,500 U.S. broadband households fielded in 4Q 2013. Data on other CE devices are also available.

MacDailyNews Take: The tide has turned. Strongly.

We never doubted it for a second.

And, what is this “Dell” of which they speak?

  1. Given the current state of PC sales this isn’t a massive surprise or something to write home about. Apple could top PC sales with little to no change in their mac sales at all.
At least microsofts new ads are either talking about the features of the surface or attacking android, the platform responsible for poor windows 8/new PC sales

  2. I always love MDN’s rewriting of the headlines. Of course, they’re smart individuals (always open to criticism) and realize before I say this that this study talks about “consumer” wishes and ignores actual sales or business purchases.

I’m an AAPL stock investor too… And I’m still waiting for the day that Apple desktops actually do become the most popular in total sales. But it’s not happening soon.

    1. Yes. And Dell who? Didn’t they decide to close the doors and give their investors back their money earlier this year? And, didn’t HP say that they wanted to leave the PC market at one time?

      iRoadkill and pay back!!!

  3. Doesn’t anyone remember what happened last year?

Gotta laugh how MDN takes all industry shipment reports as rubbish, but flouts a random survey that asks a relative handful of Americans what gadget maker has the shiniest boxes for xmas as a solid indicator of tides turning.

Hold the hubris and report actual sales for the season, shall we? After the 2012 iMac fiasco, the total miscalculation of iPhone 5C versus 5S sales volumes, and the seeming inability to get the 2013 Mac Pro out in time for the prime holiday shopping season, one should temper their optimism that Cook & Co are the “supply chain geniuses” that MDN whipped them up to be.

It will be a great holiday season for Apple, but people aren’t flush with cash. Apple has a fight on its hands to compete with the new gaming consoles & non-direct competing products that shoppers might buy instead.

    1. oops, this is the chart showing combined ipad + Mac sales trends:

NOW do you understand why some of us longtime Mac users and AAPL investors are not impressed with Cook’s performance???
