“Retailers pushing their sales for Cyber Monday and the rest of the holiday season can take note of the pattern from Black Friday,” Andria Cheng reports for MarketWatch. “Brand-name electronics, led by Apple Inc.’s iPad — which graced the front page of several retailers’ Black Friday print circulars — were the hottest sellers.”
“At Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp., the iPad Mini 16GB and iPad Air 16GB were the top sellers, respectively, according to market research firm InfoScout, which tracked the spending of 50,000 in-store shoppers, mostly ages 21 through 55, on Thursday and Friday,” Cheng reports. “The various iPad products represented 18% of Target’s sales, said InfoScout CEO Jared Schrieber. The iPad Mini alone accounted for 6.5% of Wal-Mart’s sales on Black Friday. At Best Buy, Microsoft Corporation’s Surface 32GB tablet was the top seller, followed by Apple’s iPad 2.”
MacDailyNews Take: On Black Friday, Best Buy slashed the price of Microsoft’s Surface flop from $349 to $199. Even the terminally stupid suckers who fell for this one will gain a clue in short order. Get ready for a raft of Microsoft Surface returns in late December, Best Buy.
Cheng reports, “Online, price-comparison site PriceGrabber.com said its research also showed iPad Air and iPad Mini were the top searched items of the weekend since Thanksgiving.”

Sounds like the sucky journalist neglected to add RT to the end of the MS Surface. HP also sold all their end of life tablet crap too. Poor RT misinformed suckers…
Hopefully the saved their receipts, so the recipients can exchange the Surface they got for what they really wanted – an iPad.
Hey MDN — you are ruthless in your MDN’s Takes!
Ha-ha-ha!
Even if Best Buy offered me $199 to take a free Surface, I would’ve said no thanks and grabbed an iPad.
I’d have taken it, and sold it to my buddy who thinks these are the best for business and productivity. He hates apple and I love money!
Best Buy briefly had the iPad mini with a $100 GC on the day before Thanksgiving to match Walmart’s BF ad. I managed to grab one for a gift, but they completely sold out online in less than 3 hours. It’s definitely going to be an iPad Christmas everywhere this year.
I bought two for my kids from Best Buy. The email came in before 6am, but they were sold out online by the time I looked at 8:30. My wife picked them at the local store. I love my iPad mini! Yes, I’d like a Retina model at some point, but $200 for even the low-end iPad mini is a STEAL!
We’ll use the gift cards to upgrade one of our iPhones with it – probably upgrade the wife to a 5s from her 4s.
from what I read a .29 cent bath towel was Walmart’s top black friday seller! lol
I got 3 Air’s at Target and they came with a $100 gift card.
I saw a report on TV showing the new Amazon facility in San Bernardino California. Very busy place.
The loyal Amazon spokesperson being interviewed reported the top seller was Kindle Fire.
An Amazon spokesman at their huge distribution centre here in the UK, said the biggest seller for the last four weeks has been the iPad Air.
Where does that leave the rest of the market, other than trailing in the dust…
Meat is a very appropriate gift this year.
Let us not forget that the media will likely jump on the fact that a Surface outsold the iPad at BB on BF (never mind all mountain-sized qualifiers, such as massive discount). A good clue regarding the profile of BF buyers is the next one after that No. 1 Surface: iPad 2 (a two-year old model sold at steep discount).
In other words, Black Friday shoppers at Best Buy are bottom-of-the-barrel-scraping, cheapest of the cheap bargain hunters.
Ummm… “Cheap bargain hunters” is generally the profile of nearly ALL Black Friday shoppers. I certainly wouldn’t put Best Buy shoppers at the bottom of that barrel.
If they shop Bogus, Buy, they are definitely bottom of the barrel.
I wonder what kind of loss Microsoft is taking selling at a price that is obviously below the cost to manufacture the thing. Can you say, another 900,000,000 write down. Talk about desperation, Microsoft is willing to go to any length in the hope they’ll get these in enough peoples hands in the hopes of locking them in. Good luck with that strategy, I like it, I like it a lot. Why not drop the price to $99.95?
