Avril Lavigne’s new self-titled album, one of the best pop records of the year, now streaming on Apple’s iTunes Radio

“Yes, that’s right. You heard me,” Bradley Stern writes for MuuMuse. “Avril Lavigne has a new album coming out next week. It’s called Avril Lavigne. Where’d she come up with that name? I don’t know, but it has a nice ring to it.”

“Avril’s album is seriously good, y’all,” Stern writes. “It’s a genuinely solid pop record — and one of the best pop offerings of 2013. Once you get past the fact that she adamantly refuses to be anything else than her eyeliner wearin’, SK8R BOI-lovin’ self from 2002 (which I’d love to unpack in the formal review in the next few weeks), there’s nothing not to love.”

Avril Lavigne’s new self-titled album, one of the best pop records of the year“It’s so much fun, seriously — ’17,’ for instance, is the ‘Teenage Dream’ of 2013. It’s a perfect us-against-the-world, drive-into-the-sunset record,” Stern writes. “Listen now at iTunes. To quote Avril, I like it better than the hipster bullshit [“Rock N Roll“].”

        1. Through The Avril Lavigne Foundation, she just might.

Those who do, do. Those who can’t, denigrate those with talent on the Internet. Why do you feel so inadequate?

Prior to this album’s release, Lavigne has sold more than 50 million singles and 30 million copies of her albums worldwide.

        2. It’s better to keep your hands off the keyboard and appear tasteless than peck away and remove all doubt.

Those who denigrate talent reveal their own self-loathing.

        3. twodales,

Denigrating others serves to disown what the shameful person feels. Shame may lead a person to make attributions about others that are disguised attempts to restore a positive self-view or hide negative self-perceptions. In order to escape shame’s self-diminishing effects, a person might instead denigrate others or express contempt toward them. Thus a person might attempt to bolster his own view of himself by finding flaws in others so that they become the one who is shameful.

        4. twodales,

Self-deception is a process of denying or rationalizing away the relevance, significance, or importance of opposing evidence and logical argument. Self-deception involves convincing oneself of a truth (or lack of truth) so that one does not reveal any self-knowledge of the deception.

        1. You are mistaken. According to interviews, Lennon and McCartney both claim it was composed together on a piano.

Moreover, I suggest you get your hearing checked. There is no solo vocals in the song. John and Paul sing the whole thing together as a duet throughout.

          Nice try.

      1. twodales,

“One of the best pop records of the year” does not equal “the greatest pop album of all time.”

Cognitive behavioral therapy views magnification as unconscious, unrealistic mental processing or cognitive distortion, which can take the form of probability overestimation or of catastrophizing. This is better known as “making a big deal out of nothing.” ‘Whereas probability overestimation refers to exaggerating the “likelihood” of an event, catastrophizing refers to exaggerating the “importance” of the event. Another form of cognitive exaggeration is inflation of the difficulty of achieving a goal after attaining it, possibly to improve self-esteem.

        Why such low self-esteem, twodales?

    1. I bet one of these teeny boppers will call this “best of the decade”. That’s stupid, because this decade has NOTHING to offer to art and music. We are three years into this decade, and I have yet to hear anything good.

  1. Why are people calling this one of the best albums? Knowing Avril, it sounds like the typical butt-rock that was pumped out of radios since the turn of the Millenium. I would rather listen to 90s grunge, much better than the garbage nowadays. Where is our generation’s Lennon, Michael Jackson, or Madonna? I’ll even take the Spice Girls over this trash!

  2. Slow Mac new day?

With all due respect, Lavigne is a “pop” star more than a writer or musician. This is not a slam on her, but an accurate reflection of the music industry.

    What’s the difference, you say?
    – corporate ad push, including iTunes Radio and clickwhores like MDN injecting the pop artist’s name wherever it can increase web traffic.
    – regularly refreshed image created by a team of consultants, as opposed to the person in question
    – songwriting typically involving teams, with relatively few self-penned songs
    – relatively few risks in style or production — tunes sanitized to conform to current trends and arrangements as opposed to bucking trends or treading completely new ground
    – complete lack of album concept. every song is intended first and foremost to be a single, as opposed to a chapter in an evolving story

Finally, while I wish Lavigne all the best, I would never place her talent in singing or playing anywhere near the elite, no matter how many teens lap it up, and no matter how much post-production fixes her mistakes. Perhaps someday she will evolve into something greater, but at the moment she’s a corporate puppet. Artists like Aimee Mann are the real deal: writing, recording, performing, producing, and distributing her own work.

As Pop Goes The Charts reflected, ” Lavigne’s audience has grown up, and though she has her moments of maturity, it can be lost considering its first two singles were childish and ran their course without making a significant impact”. If that is damning with faint praise, so be it.

  3. it’s a sad day for music when an auto tuned absolutely synthetic piece of “pop” gets this much attention! first of all music is the interaction of players to each other in a session . electronic beats or samples can not truly react to the other player . This is the equivalent of calling the experience a girl might have with her vibrator intamate communication. its all one sided . I read that radio stations will not even play stuff that has not ben auto tuned . although the program puts even the worst singer or player on pitch it filters out all human qualities, nuance ,emotion and makes every singer (especially pre pubescent teens) sound exactly alike (some where near a human trumpet) . I’m a guy who will trade pitch for texture any day. groups who can cut it vocally live with out the post production are rare the best of the best that i can think of is the underrated Procol Harum Gary brokers voice is often attempted but never matched ( i point you to willie nelson’s or annie lennox version of lighter shade of pale (both missed the “and so it was” note )) . no gimmick no tweaking just great music better live than from the studio. avril lavignie my ass! the whole idea of pop is repulsive appeal to the lowest common denominator cru bourgeois

    1. a list of non auto tuned players might include Arlen Roth,Chris Smithers, Small Potatoes, Proffessor long hair< Clifton Chineer, Muddy Waters, Rl Burnside, joni Mitchel , Bill Kertchin, Joan Baez , roy Orbison, george jones

      1. I just listened to some of the tracks on iTunes. It’s as Auto-Tuned as Auto-Tune gets. Even this track you posted is auto-tuned. At 0:25 you can hear a classic AT artifact. Your ears have been desensitized by a decade of auto-tuning. Go listen to some old records…

    2. Bitch, please! You may not have liked the album, or don’t like Avril , but if you have a damn thing you can not say about her is that she uses auto tune . Probably you haven’t heard the entire album and never saw many of her live performances . You hate her and talking shit, don’t confuse things . She sings live and well, and has a real band playing, interacting with it . Many songs she plays instruments. And she can play all the instruments of the band. She does the basics (obviously she is not a musician, but a singer). Which pop artist who does that nowadays?
And she co-wrote all the songs from that album and participated in the production of all of them (two of which she wrote herself).

Sorry if the album is not so good, I also didn’t think there much comparing with the early work of Avril and talent (she can do better), but seeing the pop music scene, this is one of the best pop album of the year .

      1. You’re wrong. The best album of 2013 would have to be Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories”. Daft Punk went back to the basics and took everything that made the 80s great, and modernized it THE RIGHT WAY. They even got the great icons of that era in on it: Nile Rogers, Giorgio Moroder, and even Paul Williams. They even used real instruments, not this digitized auto-tuned nonsense everyone loves these days. You have to be a tasteless buffoon to not think this is a good album. This entire album has more talent that whatever has came out since the year 2000. And yes, that includes Avril Lavinge.

  4. Are you kidding me? Are you seriously kidding me?!? About 90% of the comments on this thread are similar, if not ripped-off, from MY rantings back a few weeks ago! Apparently if it was written by someone else, it has more weight because it is NOT me! UN-Freakin’-Believable!

    1. 80’s.
If anything I wrote has appeared to rip off your rant from a few weeks ago, please forgive me. This canned poop that is called music is destroying the music industry. Lifeless, souless and talentless, this period of time is the Siberia of pop music.

      1. I feel like I have won the Powerball Lottery. You are the first person on this site who makes any sense! It seems like we are the only sane people here’ You are truly someone who I can aprecitate!

        1. I think it’s safe to say that we “got lucky.” If you don’t get the reference, then please get the album. It’s the best thing I have heard all year.

        2. Simple: it was co-written, co-played, and co-produced by none other than Nile Rodgers. If you don’t know the name, then you need to get out more often.

Though not completely a fan, Daft Punk is an innovative fusion of 70’s disco and modern electronica — which is more inventive than practically every other band on the scene today.

Modern pop music has been taken over by the drum machine and the pitch-correction software … while brilliant musicians continue to toil in semi-poverty performing live every night to half-empty clubs because the twit generation wants to download everything.

If it’s on iTunes Radio, that doesn’t automatically make it good.
