With all due respect, Lavigne is a “pop” star more than a writer or musician. This is not a slam on her, but an accurate reflection of the music industry.
What’s the difference, you say?
– corporate ad push, including iTunes Radio and clickwhores like MDN injecting the pop artist’s name wherever it can increase web traffic.
– regularly refreshed image created by a team of consultants, as opposed to the person in question
– songwriting typically involving teams, with relatively few self-penned songs
– relatively few risks in style or production — tunes sanitized to conform to current trends and arrangements as opposed to bucking trends or treading completely new ground
– complete lack of album concept. every song is intended first and foremost to be a single, as opposed to a chapter in an evolving story
Finally, while I wish Lavigne all the best, I would never place her talent in singing or playing anywhere near the elite, no matter how many teens lap it up, and no matter how much post-production fixes her mistakes. Perhaps someday she will evolve into something greater, but at the moment she’s a corporate puppet. Artists like Aimee Mann are the real deal: writing, recording, performing, producing, and distributing her own work.
As Pop Goes The Charts reflected, ” Lavigne’s audience has grown up, and though she has her moments of maturity, it can be lost considering its first two singles were childish and ran their course without making a significant impact”. If that is damning with faint praise, so be it.
it’s a sad day for music when an auto tuned absolutely synthetic piece of “pop” gets this much attention! first of all music is the interaction of players to each other in a session . electronic beats or samples can not truly react to the other player . This is the equivalent of calling the experience a girl might have with her vibrator intamate communication. its all one sided . I read that radio stations will not even play stuff that has not ben auto tuned . although the program puts even the worst singer or player on pitch it filters out all human qualities, nuance ,emotion and makes every singer (especially pre pubescent teens) sound exactly alike (some where near a human trumpet) . I’m a guy who will trade pitch for texture any day. groups who can cut it vocally live with out the post production are rare the best of the best that i can think of is the underrated Procol Harum Gary brokers voice is often attempted but never matched ( i point you to willie nelson’s or annie lennox version of lighter shade of pale (both missed the “and so it was” note )) . no gimmick no tweaking just great music better live than from the studio. avril lavignie my ass! the whole idea of pop is repulsive appeal to the lowest common denominator cru bourgeois

She sings live and well, and has a real band playing, interacting with it . Many songs she plays instruments. And she can play all the instruments of the band. Sorry if the album is not so good, I also didn’t think there much comparing with the early work of Avril and talent (she can do better), but seeing the pop music scene, this is one of the best pop album of the year .
You’re wrong. The best album of 2013 would have to be Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories”. Daft Punk went back to the basics and took everything that made the 80s great, and modernized it THE RIGHT WAY. They even got the great icons of that era in on it: Nile Rogers, Giorgio Moroder, and even Paul Williams. They even used real instruments, not this digitized auto-tuned nonsense everyone loves these days. You have to be a tasteless buffoon to not think this is a good album. This entire album has more talent that whatever has came out since the year 2000. And yes, that includes Avril Lavinge.
