Apple’s Safari for iOS dominates mobile Web browser traffic 2-1 over Android

“Akamai is out with its quarterly state of the Internet report as of the end of the second quarter of 2013,” Arik Hesseldahl reports for AllThingsD.

“One thing Akamai saw was an uptick in Web browser traffic from mobile devices. Akamai cited data from Ericcson saying that mobile data traffic doubled over the year-ago period,” Hesseldahl reports. “By comparison voice call traffic grew by only four percent during the same period.”

“Akamai also tracked which browser was in use,” Hesseldahl reports. “Across all networks (cellular and WiFi) Apple’s Safari on the iPhone and iPad [accounted] for about 60 percent of requests versus Android’s browser which was seen no more than 33 percent of the time.”

      1. … saying is that Safari (for iOS) still sucks, even with iOS7 and that no amount of spin (twice as much use as …) can make that fact go away.
My wife uses Safari for iOS7 on our iPad and is satisfied. I am not so satisfied … not enough real estate. I imagine I’d be horrified at trying to use it on the even-smaller iPhone. But I wouldn’t blame the software!

  1. It would be nice what devices “other” ran on. You can use other browsers on iOS and Android. Even without that it shows just how little web traffic is on other phones; Win and BB. The slightly higher number for Android on “cell only” could be due to larger numbers of Android devices in developing nations that have fewer wifi hotspots. Still, this study, along with others, keep pointing to the fact that iOS users use their devices for the web far more than Android users. This has to be bad for Google, their payoff for Android was more people would use their browser so they could sell more ads. It also upholds the belief that most Android phones are used as feature phones, call and text only, replacements. I am one of those believers.

    1. “Still, this study, along with others, keep pointing to the fact that iOS users use their devices for the web far more than Android users.”

Or, that Android activations are greatly exaggerated…

      1. As are all of these reports! Who cares about this stuff? No one I know cares about the mine is bigger than yours crap between platforms. They want a device that works and to some affordability is important and most do not know an Android from an Asteroid or an Apple from a Microsoft.

      2. Yeah, bpondo, it does make one wonder about all of the low-cost Android-based tablets that are reportedly being sold. Surely people are using them to access the internet? And all of those Android “smartphones” that reportedly corner around 80% of the market???surely people use them to access the internet?

Or, could it possibly be hat most of the Android phones that are sold are simply filling the role of a low-cost feature phone, the niche that Nokia used to fill with its Symbian phones? Most people who want a real smartphone appear to choose the iPhone. Not much of a surprise to the people in this forum.

  2. How is that even possible considering Android’s 80% market share? Are most Android smartphones users only using their devices to make telephone calls or play games? With so many new Android smartphones having larger displays, I thought users would be using those large displays to browse the internet. Large display Android smartphones would still be in the minority because not every consumer around the globe would be buying the high-end Android smartphone models.

Because so many Android users in poorer nations have less money to spend, maybe they only use the internet sparingly so as not to run up data charges. It’s just hard to imagine that with all those hundreds of millions of Android device users out there, that their internet browsing time would be so much less than iOS users. Unfortunately these browser traffic numbers are not going to matter to Wall Street because only global smartphone sales numbers have any useful meaning to the big investors. Apple always seems to be the leader in numbers that Wall Street doesn’t care about.

    1. First, you don’t even get a selection of the old flip-open or slider phones anymore. Meaning, Mom and Pop have to buy “smartphones” when the old Nokia croaks. The sales people happily point them to the HTC and Samsung racks where “smartphones” are hardly more expensive than the good old slider. These folks are not the demographic prone to much web use.
Secondly, if you have to scrimp for a phone, you can’t afford a good provider either, one with fast mobile web and a real flat rate deal. Hence, you only surf sparingly on text-heavy sites. Less traffic.
      q.e.d.

  3. What would the Hee Haw demographic need Internet for? They don’t even have good Internet connection out in the redneck, hick parts of the Midwest. I know a guy who is STILL on dial-up because no cable company would operate in his neck of the woods. Not even an iPhone would save him… 🙁

  4. I bet reactions would be different if the take referred to the “ghetto booty thug” demographic, instead of Hee Haw. Both are poor, but in different regions. I live in Detroit, and know many people who have Android, and I remember, when Instagram was first released on Android, that many iOS users worried that Instagram was turning into “section 8” and a lot of “N**** Hoes” were polluting an iPhone original app. The hypocrisy of Apple fans is so disgusting that it hurts.
