“Four days ago, I tested my iPhone 5S sensors and found that the phone’s level and gyroscope sensors were reporting anomalous data, data that was very different from what my iPhone 5 was reporting — and different from what other, analog sensors, such as a simple mechanical bubble level, were telling me9,” John Koetsier reports for VentureBeat.
“Today, after no comments from Apple, I also tested my iPhone 5C and discovered similar issues,” Koetsier reports. “The sensors in the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C are simply not accurate. At least, not in my models, and certainly not in the models of others on Apple support forums, or in Gizmodo’s testing.”
“I’ve been in touch with an Apple representative on these issues, and received responses, but Apple has not released a statement on the issue, or given any guidance on what might be happening here — whether it’s a software issue, a calibration issue, or the worst-case scenario: damaged sensor hardware,” Koetsier reports. “Unfixable sensor problems would put a dent in Apple’s reputation as the company that sweats the small stuff to get every last detail right.”

Did MSFT build this thing? Wonder if the Chinese manufacturer would try to take down Apple a few notches by shorting these new devices of completely functional sensors? This could be very damaging if it cannot be fixed vids software.
How about we actually see if there’s an issue here, as opposed to jumping to conclusions. Apple generally doesn’t release releases about how it intends to respond to problems, real or perceived, which isn’t to say that it isn’t doing anything.
Yes please. The issue sounds real. But we know nothing about the scope, whether it is isolated to a particular batch of parts, whether it’s Samsung sabotage (wouldn’t put it past the) or the effect of poltergeist. There’s a lot more information to come before this issue get’s nailed down. I wouldn’t dismiss it, but I also don’t see any reason to go all PaNiC over it yet.

Hardly feasible, since these sensors aren’t just in Apple’s devices. More than likely it’s an iOS 7 compiler issue. Meaning these Apps had to be recompiled into two versions. One in 64bit for iPhone 5s and one for the new hardware in the cheaper 5c that could also run on legacy devices in 32bit. One or the other has to be emulated or virtualized on whatever chip is installed.
More than likely we’ll see more problems with Apps in using the hardware of both these new devices. Probably more than we’ll see on legacy devices with iOS 7 installed. So in reality this is nothing to get too excited about just yet. But it does expose the fact that they are using the same technique they used to get 64bit Apps running on OS X installed on 64bit IBM PowerPC chips.
A fiasco waiting to happen? Hardly….. just some bugs to work out and a face saving admission that in all reality iOS 7 isn’t a ground up developed 64bit system!!! 😀
There is no need for a recall; low-level driver settings will be updated/re-calibrated and that is it.

I am guessing just like antenna gate there is nothing here at all, they are just trying to do some dame to the surge of iPhone sales going on.
It is interesting (as someone who uses the feature) that all the high precision level or grade apps I use have calibration functions (turn the phone 180deg so it can determine the error)
Because this has always been the case I am willing to bet that just like antenna gate there is a natural tendency for the sensors to require calibration (if being used to determine sub 1% accuracy (and remember given 360deg even a 3deg error would be a sub 1% error))
I am betting that the sensors in all phones need calibration to be use at high accuracy and that someone (samsung? google?) is just attempting to spin this as an apple flaw
Which if you remember is exactly the same as they did with antennagate, where they took the fact all cell phones loose signal if you wrap your hand around the antenna and painted is as an iPhone flaw.

Yep… just as I supposed-
I had some time so I deleted and reloaded the two apps I use most for grade/angle measurement (to clear the calibrations stored in preferences) on my iPhone 5 (not 5s): Clinometer by Breitlinger (for reading incline & grade) and Hunter Research’s Theodolite (basically software version of a modern surveyors theodolite (obviously not as accurate as a surveying instrument which can read down to a few seconds))
Anyway… with calibrations deleted both read a couple degrees off in both axises (accuracy ~±5 thousandths) (and both apps specify that you should calibrate the app)
After calibration (takes about 30 seconds) bit could accurately read down to a few ten-thousandths. Just so you get how amazing that is the equates to the theodolite being accurate down to a couple minutes of arc (60 minutes in a degree) Not too shabby, for a phone.
And I am willing to bet that every smartphone behaves similarly (hell… you even need to calibrate a $5,000 theodolite) and that this is yet another deception by samsung.

It’s simply a lack of calibration or the fact that Deviation (the affect of magnetic forces in the immediate environment) can’t be compensated for on the device itself. Only Declination can be adjusted according to the device’s location on the earth!

You can’t be serious. ANTENNAGATE was real how ever, other phones can suffer from it too, depending on how you hold them. Apple unfortunately placed the space between the antennas just at the wrong spots. In the keynote where the phone was unveiled Steve was bragging about this new antenna system and actually pointed out the little black band in the steel frame and what it was there and why Apple would break the nice design like that. Of course, you could hold the phone differently and you could not get any problems but most people’s just pick up the phones, or if you got big hands. They mitigated it and solved it in the S4, I guess, I never heard any problems reported about that after 4. Even if people, some people were holding it wrong it would be insane NOT for Apple’s engineers not to redesign the antenna.

My daughter’s 5s is fine, same results as my 5. My 5s arrives thursday, I will report on that. I do not see why 5c should be bad, it does not have 7 chip. Assuming chip is the problem.

I’ve got 2 iPhone 5s units, 2 iPhone 5 units and 1 HTC ONE on my desk right now. If the two 5s’s get close to one another they freak out presumably due to interference, but it makes me wonder just how sensitive the 5s is to interference.
I’ve gone through calibration on them all and at times they ALL show wildly different readings. If I go through the old fashioned calibrarion (figure 8) they at least start getting directions right.
If I check level, i.e. put the my iphone 5s flat down on the desk it shows -1, so do the iPhone 5 units. I’m not sure what’s going on.
If you need better accuracy, get a professional level/compass, this is a freaking phone people.

And not only that – a compass will be deflected by the electro-magnetic field around electrical wiring or apparatus.

You may be on to something for why this seems to be a problem for only some devices. It works on the principals of a Magnetometer and combines that reading with the gyroscope’s reading as a check and balance system. The phones gyroscope is also based on the principle of a magnetometer. However both should be protected in theory by compensation calculated in accordance with the GPS location for declination, etc. Declination variances are calculated by the device’s location on the earth.
Deviation however is not calculated and therefore you’ll see a variance according to magnetic fields around the device. Get either of these wrong in an App’s algorithm and your results will vary accordingly!
Here’s one test I’d like to see:
Install Ghost O Meter in two iPhone 5s or 5c phones and see if their readings agree. This COULD be the dead ancestors of the Samsung family reaching out of the grave to sabotage iPhone 5s and 5c sensors! 😉

I started out with a chat support Session with a Apple rep. While I was bored at work to see what they’d say cuz I’ve read a 100 different things people claimed apple reps said. Like one suppose ip5 owner claimed a rep said it was gonna get fixed in a update and apple wasn’t taking anymore exchanges. And a quite a few others claiming whatever. Bottom line as you should with this, take everything said with a grain of salt said about iPhone, or Apple in general.
So 1st rep chatted about 5-7 mins and then had Me wait while he checked…. Something about today. Maybe today’s records? Anyways he transferred me to his advisor. His supervisor, after he asked how my day was just said he would like to make a ticket and have a engineer call me, I guess had enough info from the notes the 1st rep took. So the engineer called in 15 mins and said they’d heard nothing about it and said I could either A.-wait and Let him find out what is said about it in the next few weeks (I’m guessing if more issues), whether software or hardware and he’d be in touch OR B- take in to the Apple store so they could determine then and there(which he recommended. Would be quicker etc… Obviously )
I took the 2nd option. That’s all I wanted to know was if they were aware and/or ready to say they were aware. If not then I’ll take it in. Or if they knew and a firmware was the answer, then I’d rather just keep it and wait. I find it hard to believe they haven’t heard. Forbes plus quite a few of other tech sites reported and. Most did their own Comparisent. More then gizmodo (which I don’t even go to anyhow), practically every one I read did. Ilounge,Forbes.. I think cnet went off gizmodo. The Internet is full of speculation about this (and everything else) so I may as well add mine, but it seemed that the rep knew its hardware.
I downloaded a pretty fun and simple game called airplane. I turned on motion controls and on the runway for take off I throttled it all the way up and laid phone on flat surface with volume controls facing ceiling, so it was level. My Cessna airplane veered off to the right with the quickness. Didn’t even come close to making off ground. So 1degree is quite a bit which I didn’t really suspect. I couldn’t tell a huge difference with a racing game, but it was there but your usually always moving the phone anyhow cuz straight always don’t last long. On airplane it’s one straight away to take off. But even after taking off it keeps going to the side. For me it was always towards the home screen button side. After airplane I thought screw it I’m gonna call and see what they say. No more going off other peoples word which I never did before. Most complaints about iPhone are bogus (if it didn’t happen to my phone then it was bogus)
I told the engineer that I checked the level after noticing the problem with the games and I noticed it was 1 degree off He said ” Well you just answered the only question I had, was that if you tried the level and if you tried on a verified level area”. So I don’t think this is a update fix. And I would think he would of had more question. They always always asks to do a restore as new. But none of that.

Test 10 physical bubble levels from the hardware store.
1. Put first one on flat horizontal surface.
2. Note precise position of bubble.
3. Turn 180 degrees.
4. Note precise position of bubble.
Repeat for each level.
Record how many have the bubble in EXACTLY the same position for 2 and 4.
Repeat for 20 million more bubble levels.
How much difference does it make for the apps that use these sensors? Games that use it don’t care. It is only the level part of the compass app that makes a slight difference for those who don’t calibrate it.
It’s all connected. Today when a engineer from apple called me and he asked me to just tell him the problem instead of him having to read all the notes I told him I just noticed Friday that the the few games I played, the steering would veer to the left. I told him I then check level and it was off by 1 degree. I actually checked level 1st cuz of articles. But when I was done explaining my problem he said, that was the question I was gonna ask you was if you checked the level. So it’s obviously all connected. I could care less about the level. Even games, I play very seldom. I have a problem of buying and never playing. Never the less I want to be able to play with no problems when I want to.
If that’s was the only question he had was about did i try the compass when I really only told him what games were doing. I ended it with the compass readings.
I’m off by just 1 degree. Seems like nothing but the airplane game I go, without touching anything the plane spins to the left slowly. When I give throttle it runs off runway and hits side of mountain.

Someone got technical with it above but it veers off at about 10-11 o’clock. Pretty f’n drastic specially for being off by 1 degree.
I’m gonna go to apple store tomorrow at 9 am, the time the engineer made my appointment for and I’m gonna walk out with a iPhone. This isn’t even close enough of a problem for me to switch phones or recommend another phone. And this is no minute problem. I don’t play games but pretty sure the gyroscope will be used for something I need or like down the road. But I still wouldn’t even think of walking out without a iPhone tomorrow. I immediately reported on a tech forum that my 5s had a tilt on the compass about 4 degrees. I was wondering why flying and racing games required me to tilt the phone to the right to keep things straight. I haven’t restored the OS yet with iTunes, but this certainly IS in issue, though how widespread is unknown.
As a certified instrumentation technician for many years I can say that this all sounds like bullshit. What standard are you using for your benchmark for level? Is your floor actually level? Is your table level? Is your $1.98 hardware store bubble level accurate? To what tolerances? Was the phone level when you zeroed it? Did you zero all the phones against the same standard?
There are very detailed and precise calibration procedures that must be followed in a calibration lab to ensure accuracy in situations like this. But I’m sure your $1.98 level stacked on your Macbook, on an Ikea table, sitting on a floor supported by a 30 year old foundation is the be all and end all of calibration standards….yeah, right.
Never mind the scientific trials, the story has high drool value for the geek segment for a bit until it fizzles for lack of consumer interest.
Let’s see now: Antennagate and Mapgate, Designgate and now Compassgate. After all that, Apple is still in business, how exactly?

No one seems to be capable of identifying exactly how they tested their devices, which app, etc. Until they can be explicit, so others can try to replicate the problem, there’s not much point to the whole discussion.
This is a real issue. My 5s level shows 3 degrees off and my wife’s 5 degrees. That is with Apple’s level in the compass app. HOWEVER, with the ihandy level app, which has a calibrate button, the readings are dependable and repeatable. I think Apple has an issue with how iOS is reading the new sensors in the absence of calibration for each app that uses the gyro. Seems a software or firmware fix is needed, but I’m no engineer.
You hit it right on the mark. It’s most likely in iOS7’s App compiler. Which must now compile two versions of it in both 32bit and 64bit. On new hardware such as that in both these devices (5s and 5c) and no older devices being affected, it is most likely compiler error.
Which isn’t all that uncommon. No software Compiler is as accurate and efficient as hand coded Apps. A compiler is for lazy developers, who aren’t about to get there hands dirty using pencils or pens or their dirty screened computers to take the time to properly code their Apps for these two new devices.
Aside from that, the new compilers themselves could be the blame. Which can be fixed, unlike poorly installed chips on boards. Meaning that would be a SensorGate issue that could be traced to factories assembling new iPhone boards in China!

Just how accurate is a cell phone gyro supposed to be anyway? Installed to rotate photos and play video games, I don’t think it was ever supposed to be a precision carpenters tool, nor was it ever advertised as such.

Apple doesn’t make apple look bad. Many say apple is arrogant and that’s why they’re under a microscope but they’re not. They’re just a proud company. And rightly so. It’s fools like you who make apple look bad. Who make Apple out to be perfect. They are the best at what they do, but not perfect. It’s a tech. Who can be perfect. Tech or not. So get off Apples nuts (apples nuts haha) and except, tho they are better then the rest of competition, they’re not perfect.
The thing is, my old 4s was dead on accurate under these same test conditions. Something is buggy with the 5s gyro but I’ll bet there is a software fix ahead. There better be.
I have a 5s and can atest its VERY off when it comes to using iHandy’s level. That said I never assumed it would be of any real use in that regard but if its any indication of what is happening in a game . . . ouch!
Just got off the phone with a good friend of mine who works at Apple @ IL2, I told him about the ongoing 5C and 5S sensor “issue” reported by customers then he replied me with “… Bring out the Radar Cat…”. He said that this is an inside joke and refuse to explain it further…. hmm…

Is that your only excuse for Apple’s coming in 2nd place? I mean I’m no fan of any device maker including Apple, but at least I’ll acknowledge the fact that this in all likelihood has nothing to do with Samsung or their fans.

Samsung nor their fans has anything to gain and everything to lose in this case. They are in fact sitting at the top of the heap in total Smartphone sales of between 85 & 89 Million Smartphones in September Quarter. On the year, they will easily break 300 Million by year’s end. If you can’t face that fact, then that’s your problem. Not Samsung’s or their fan’s!!!
Not bogus here. Apple user since my Apple II 1970s and a wee bit of a fanboi. One wooden desk, four phones all running the latest version of 7. tested yesterday. My 4 reads 1°. My coworker’s 5 reads 1°. Another coworker’s 5c (white) reads 1°. Final coworker’s 5s reads 5°. Same spot on desk, same orientation. Then re-tested on other flat surfaces in office two more times. Same results … a 4° difference on the new 5s. Something is out of kilter (pun not intended).
Apple sucks! I’m a Navy Seal and just last week, while conducting a spy mission over North Korea, my flight controls went haywire. I attempted to use my iPhone Level to assist me in making an emergency landing, but it instead caused me to crash in a remote jungle in enemy territory, despite Apple Maps indicating I was in a Pittsburgh-area shopping mall. I tried to call for help, but the antenna malfunctioned. As night fell, I attempted to find my way out of the jungle, but Compass led me around in circles and gave me vertigo. Furthermore, the bright colors of iOS7 revealed my position to my enemy pursuers. I hid until midnight, when I heard rescue choppers: I knew I needed a signal fire fast. My effort to use my iPhone as a flint failed, breaking the glass, but fortunately my battery burst into flames just in time. I was saved. If only I had a Samsung, none of this would ever have happened. I filed recommendations in my debrief to the squad commander the next morning.
I have a new 5s and 5c, bought on launch day. I don’t know about the compass, but the horizontal level is off on the 5s by -4deg and on the 5c by -2deg when placed on a flat surface as verified by an analog level. There is definitely an issue with my two phones. Hardware or software? IDK. Will be taking them to Apple this weekend & will report the outcome.
The compass/level app in iOS 7 works flawlessly on my 4S and my wife’s 4S. On my new 5S, the level is 3 to 4 degrees off in every orientation.
Forgive me for expecting all features of my new flagship Apple device to work. If it’s a software issue I’m sure Apple will fix it (which differentiates Apple from other manufacturers). If it’s a hardware issue Apple is going to be replacing some phones.
Also Messages isn’t working on the 5S but works fine on the 4S. I keep telling myself not to be an early adopter and I keep on early adopting.
If any one is still following this article, even though I’ll probably catch heat but I’m gonna share my experience I had today at my genius appointment. A apple engineer actually suggested I go and even made my appointment for me two days ago cuz Apple hasn’t heard of the problem. It started out with the chat service that’s under the “Support” at apple.com.
I Told the 1st rep/tech my problem and said basically it’s seems to be well known but it’s hard to believe what you hear in the media. So I just wanted to know if it could/would be fixed in a update. He claimed to have never heard of the issue. He asked me a few more questions and he would like to pass me to his supervisor if that was ok. Still only chatting, he did. I told him the same. Main concern was I just wanted to know if it would be fixed in update or is it not as widespread as it seems and maybe I should go in for replacement. Again he also hasn’t heard of the issue. He asked to hold (while on chat still lol) so he could get a engineer lined up to call me cuz they’d like to know more about it.
About 15 mins later the engineer called. Again, I said same thing. The problem and that it seems widespread. Should I wait for a update? I’d be happy to. It doesn’t affect anything except games I told him. But if it manufacture flaw then I’d take it into Apple. He put me on hold to… I can’t quote him cuz I can’t remember how he said it. It was along the lines of, can you hold so I can check today’s logs or records. I assumed to see if any other calls came in about the issue? But he returned and said They haven’t heard of this issue. He Gave me two options. He Didn’t ask me to restore or anything (always thought that was a given). I took the option of going in to store so a genius could see in person vs another way which could have took up till 2 weeks.
He asked if I wanted him to make the appointment, I said sure. Fast forward to this AM at 9. Told the apple genius dude the deal while demonstrating. What does he say…. Oh yea that is a documented issue. I said whaaat, I knew it’s been in the media a bit but the engineers didn’t know anything about it. He even made this appointment for me. He saids, “that’s crazy. Even I know this. It’s wide pretty wide spread. Something to do with iOS7.” He claimed. I told him that’s all I wanted to know. If a update will fix. He said he really thinks so. Then he said hold on I’ll be right back. He went in back for 5 mins maybe. When he returned he said he tried 5 different 5s’s and they were all off level. He said he tried 5’s as well and they were off. The only phone he didn’t try 4s’s. I told him I did the 4s and it was green all the way around. Even on ios7.
He said he’s sure it’ll be fixed in a update coming soon. He said probably a 7.1. And that he could switch me out but id have the same problem. I said yea don’t worry about it. I asked (he prolly wouldn’t know anyhow) do you think it could be manufacture? He said most likely not. It’s happening to all phones running ios7 and it’s so wide spread. Even though most here say BS it’s fake an not happening to their phone. I couldn’t tell him, well people at MDN forum seem to not have the problem.
So he asked if I bought the phone there and if yes they’d do a return no problem. He said I wouldn’t, it’s a few degrees and he’s sure there will be a fix. I said nah I’m keeping it. I Just wanted ease of mind knowing they knew. And my phone wasn’t like 1 out of a 100 that had the problem. He claims they’re all like that. You can call me a liar and a troll. All is good. But that is what he said. And that’s what I wanted to hear.
So to the few that really had the problem or admitted it on here, that is what a genius said at Tampa international Mall. I know one could one thing and another could say something else. But they no doubt have the best customer service and everyone I ever talked to there you could tell they really enjoy there job. Specially dealing in customer service. But they’re always bright and chipper. Being a assistant manager at a car dealership and I deal with quite a bit of customer service along with a lot of labor work. I know one pissed off person who is having a bad day and decides to take it out on the person trying to help them, could mess up your vibe if your not thick skinned. I’ve never had a bad experience there. Even today I felt he was being straight up a did what he could and gave me my options.
There isn’t a store other then Apple that I could go to and just look around for hours (if my wife would let me.) I would not give up my apple device for something minute even though you do expect the best. Specially when paying full price. But regardless, it’s just what’s expected. But I believe it’ll be fixed like guy said. It’s hard to not get caught up in the media. “Its manufacture defect that can’t be fixed through update.” And being with apple for so long my 1st instinct is, BS. It’s prolly not even messed up. Then it is and I’m still thinking Apple’s got this. Just like my 5s rebooting by it self once a day. They gave us a nice new update and it just a little price we have to expect. Like ALL tech. A few bugs.
Honestly it was here that people seem to not have a problem so I felt then I did. Or maybe they knew better like I usually do. Just got caught up. That’s my book. 😉
