Rebels use Apple iPad used to line up mortar shot in Syria (with photo)

“In a Reuters photo from Sept. 15, 2013, a member of the ‘Ansar Dimachk’ Brigade, part of the ‘Asood Allah’ Brigade which operates under the Free Syrian Army, is shown using an iPad during preparations to fire a homemade mortar at one of the battlefronts in Jobar, Damascus,” Tom Bemis reports for MarketWatch.

Twitter speculation suggests the device is being used to determine the angle of fire for the mortar,” Bemis reports.

Syrian rebels, who’ve improvised their own tanks in the past, have found a new way to use Apple iPads.

      1. I do understand (a little) the forum here and the little hearted approach to this article.

However I was expecting one post at the least, would clarify that these “rebels” aren’t anything like our early American settlers my friends.

The videos were made public of a “rebel” opening the chest and eating the organs of his enemy.

I’m sorry this by necessity is so blunt, but please, for MDN to even lightly compare SJ’s famous espousal of true freedom loving and forward thinking Rebels to these narrow minded, women and religion repressing, evil men is shameful.

And I was disappointed that my fellow commentators were either ignorant of the facts or unwilling to defend true visionary rebels and SJ’s theme from the early Apple days!

    1. Most of the ousters are evil terrorists themselves. At least Assad is tolerant to all the various religious groups in Syria. My wife’s cousin is stranded in an area where, if he tries to leave his neighborhood a REBEL sniper will shoot anyone crossing the line they have drawn. We spoke with him on Skype a few weeks ago. They hadn’t been able to get food for days and the rebels were preventing the government from getting aid to them.
Don’t believe anything you hear from western media about the situation in Syria. Its full of lies and BS, as usual.

  1. Is there an App that calculates the trajectory from the angle?
    I found http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101012090039AAnH8VZ
which says the speed of the shell leaving the cannon also needs to be known.
    Any way to calculate that?
    Probably needs an accessory….
But then, it would be nifty app (which Apple would most likely NOT approve)
    😉
A surefire hit with rebels around the world.
But remember: one man’s rebel is the other man’s terrorist (or the same man’s, fifteen years in time forward)…

    1. All military munitions come with trajectory tables. During WWII, when “computers” were women with slide rules, adding machines, pencil, and paper, the military had thousands of them doing nothing more than producing trajectory tables.

So a given munition fired from a given mortar tube will—after you consult the table—land within a certain uncertainty circle from the published impact point. Barometric pressure is a big factor in producing systematic errors—either short or long.

So what you do is have a forward observer watching where your first shots are landing. Then all you need precise compensating adjustments from where your previous shots were angled. Ergo, a level with one-tenth-degree precision. An iPad or iPhone running something like Clinometer works fine.

    2. there are apps for firing stuff.
Some time ago I read the U.S military uses BulletFight for their snipers equipped with iPhones.

“Knight’s Armament BulletFlight is a military-grade ballistic computer that provides quick solutions in the field. BulletFlight does not output information in table format but rather dynamically gives you the solution you need now to make that shot. Current weather conditions including temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction can be input, as well as angles to the target as measured by the built-in accelerometer.”

      not sure about mortar rounds.

      ——
IPhones iPads are widely used in the military from data gathering, action planning and as translators (arabic etc).
Human Automation Labs has an iPhone app for controlling military drones.

  2. When my LIFE is at stake do you think I would trust a malware infested low battery life Android tablet? Not to mention the Android Spy Ware (who knows who is watching you, huh? ). I’m crazy but not THAT crazy.

And did I tell you about Mehmet who got shot while trying to type on his Surface Pro detachable Keyboard while running….. F*ck you Bill Gates you owe me an RPG man!

  3. “Obama waives ban on arming terrorists to allow aid to Syrian opposition” (Al Quaeda)

Just wow… you fucktards in the US are such asswipes that you allow this to go on… on the anniversary of 9/11.

You Ovomit voter must be so proud!

I piss on all of you!
