Flop or adequate supply? All five colors of Apple’s iPhone 5C still available for preorder

We just checked Apple’s online store pre-order pages for iPhone 5c which began accepting pre-orders at 12:01am PDT/3:01am EDT today.

iPhone 5c units, in all five colors (blue, green, pink, yellow, white) and in either size (16GB or 32GB) that Apple offers, are still available for pre-order with guaranteed September 20th delivery.

So, is this an early sign of a flop for Apple’s repackaged, polycarbonate-clad iPhone 5 or did Apple just finally make enough of them to satisfy demand this time?

Apple’s top brass are either sweating bullets right now or they can’t stop smiling.

We’ll know the answer this Monday if a press release touting how many sold in the first weekend appears or not.

Apple’s iPhone 5c pre-order site here.

MacDailyNews Take: As these are essentially iPhone 5 units in a new candy shell, Apple likely amassed these by the boatload – especially since they went on pre-order not just in the US, but also in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.

Also, this isn’t the iPhone for which early adopters will be lining up. That will be the new iPhone 5s when sales start on September 20th at 12:01am PDT online, 8am local at Apple Retail Stores.

Why would anyone buy an iPhone 5c instead of an iPhone 5s? – September 10, 2013

    1. You would have to be a fool to buy this thing.

      I’m keeping my iPhone forever!

When are you guys going to stop apologizing for Tim Cook and start demanding that the Apple board take action?

I was just as big an Apple fan as anyone, regardless of how these dogmatic neanderthals position me as a troll. I’m no hypocrite… If Cook were a good CEO for Apple I would be the first to laud him.

But unfortunately he is not and they only thing he has been consistent at is screwing up!

      1. Other than the Imac debacle, what has Tim Cook screwed up? Are you listening to Wall Street analysts? They can’t seem to get any information correct.

Apple never said they were making a low cost phone, analysts did. They were wrong, and are now spreading BS in as many directions as possible to do some CYA.

Apple just put out some great looking phones, and no one is putting a gun to your head to buy one. By all means hold on to your phone, if i could upgrade my 4S to the 5S I would, but my crappy Canadian provider is still on 3 year contracts and I dont have 800.00 burning a hole in my pocket (thats for the next Ipad).

      2. Oh Puh-lease…
Do you seriously think anyone is actually buying that shtick?
Or, do you receive compensation regardless of how inane you posts are.
(Though, Perhaps you are one of those truly pathetic little apple haters that haunt Apple news sites for free. In that case; dude wake up before it’s too late, there is so much more to life than hatin’)

      3. Really? A fool to buy an iPhone 5c via pre-order?

        OR. . .

Get up at some unsociable hour or start queuing several days in advance hoping to get an iPhone 5s.

I guess if your phone is the thing that distinguishes you as a person, then that little ‘s’ after the 5 is really important. Better get the gold one so you can stand out in the crowd 🙂

If like millions of others, you fancy a bit of colour in your life then the 5c is the ticket.

An iPhone is an iPhone is an iPhone. Get over it!

      4. 1. Why would anyone have to be a fool to buy this thing?
        2. Good for you.
        3. I don’t see what in Steven’s comment could be construed as apologizing for Tim Cook?
        4. Your entire post wreaks of troll poop.
        5. What has he screwed up? Apple is continuing to generate record profits. What’s good for share holders is not good for Wall Street. I have no doubt Apple will sell more 5C’s than anyone expects. And due to lower manufacturing costs profitability will go up showing the genius of Tim Cook.

What you and other don’t get is Apple doesn’t need another Steve Jobs to lead Apple. Apple needs Tim Cook to lead Apple and he is doing an amazing job. Steve built a great TEAM at Apple so that it would survive well beyond his death. The talent at Apple is deep and just as fanatically about changing the world as Steve was.

      5. And just how many multi-billion dollar companies have you been CEO of orandy?

Steve Jobs would not have recommended Tim Cook for the position if he had any doubts about his abilities. There have only been a couple hiccups during his time in the position. Even Steve Jobs himself had a few bombs along the way.

Apple is great because they don’t care what Wall Street, Pundits, or armchair CEOs think – they concentrate on the experience and build the hardware and software to provide that to their customers. There are only going to be more awesome things coming from Cupertino in the future. Things most of us haven’t even thought about yet.

      1. Its not its cast then cnc milled just like the aluminum one and then polished by machine and hard coated. Watch the video on apples sight with jony Ive about the 5 c it shows a lot of video on how it is made.

  1. This is dumb. No one is going to pre-order last years iPhone. I don’t know what these guys were thinking. No one is clamoring for last years phone. Now if it was pre-orders for the 5s (like they should have done in the first place) then it would have probably sold out. These guys are starting to show signs of intellectual attrition after Jobs.

    1. There are a TON of people that have iPhone 4 and 4s models that couldn’t upgrade till now! And with the trade for cash options available, some people can actually make money on getting a new phone. Now, I couldn’t see buying a plastic phone when the 5s is sitting right there for 100 bucks more. However I don’t represent the majority of purchasers around the world. Do you really think Apple hasn’t thought long and hard about their options and what makes sense… Come on people, relax and watch them get hammered in the stock market as they sell millions of phones 😉

    2. Most consumers are not that savvy to know it’s a “year-old-iPhone. Unless they tear the thing apart, to them it’s a new iPhone in colorful garb. You should realize that most consumers don’t follow the smartphone industry as close as you do. There’s nothing on the packaging that says these are old smartphones, so how can they tell. For those consumers moving from a feature phone, even a year-old iPhone is a step up. Merely saying something is new and improved will usually fool most consumers. I, for one, believe Apple will break sales records because the company is set up with enough stores and the online site to do so.

  2. Why would one get a 5c? To save $100 versus a 5s? How many people are going to wake up at the crack of dawn to do that? 5s sales will be high, 5c sales are for cheapskates/teenagers = not preorderers. 5c offers no upgrade incentive for 5 owners.

    1. The 5C is for people who just don’t care as much about their smartphones.

In the west this phone is for a maturing market — Apple wants a product for everyone. Even people like my mom who might have been pushed to buy an Android by the salesman, or people like my dad who just want one of those old flip phone things. Now there’s an iPhone for them.

In the developing world it’s about having a more competitively priced phone to build more market share, while maintaining the premium position and margins they already have.

  3. Every year the motherfsckers say they check their anal about Apple .

One thing I want to say is , if the anal ists is that smart to judge sth by their anal . Why ! Why ! They can’t check what is in the Apple channel about the coming wow product !! Nobody seem to know what it is . Aren’t the anal ists smart to CHECK ?

every time I read they check their channel , I very very angry !!!

  5. Nobody is excited by either the 5C or the 5S. The 5S is the second time Apple has whiffed, the first being the 5 last year which was just a tiny improvement over the 4S. The magic is gone at Apple. Gone gone gone. Find me one person that’s just as excited to get a 5S as they were to get a 4 way back when.

    1. Well, I’ll be buying a 5S. I suppose you’re right about the lack of excitement though. It all looks and feels a little too familiar and nothing about it feels like the #1 must have when the 4 came out. Still, I need to upgrade from my 4S so I’ll be buying it.

  6. Here we go… They’re going to try and compare this preorder with last year’s. Apple is once again set up for failure by the media.

Do they really think the 5C is going to reach those launch levels? This is a repackaged iPhone 5… All the cool new tech that everyone is clamoring for is the 5S.

  7. Whether or not people are clamoring to buy the 5C, why is the tech media in such a hurry these days to declare everything a success or failure a minute before it comes out? That is no mistake. I am saying a minute before it comes out intentionally to make a point. Lots of things in life start off slowly then pick up speed. That can happen with the 5C here. I am hardly one to defend Apple though I own a couple Apple products, but this is ridiculous.

  8. It could be they made enough for the preorder. It has been reported that the 5’a manufacturing was difficult. Plastic could make the process a lot easier. Quick sellout looks great in a headline, however a nightmare for sales. You never want to turn away customers. My bet, Monday they will announce largest first weekend sales of a smartphones.

  9. Apple is well stocked for this unprecedented massive simultaneous world rollout.

Don’t expect sellouts that fast, the sales numbers will eventually make idiots out of all the deniers.

  10. Am I the only person here seeing the brilliance in re-packaging iPhone 5 in a plastic shell???

Let us review prior release patterns: the new model comes out, last year’s model is discounted by 20% ($100); two-year model goes down further by $100. All the buzz was reserved for the new model only; the last-year one was getting no particular love and sales automatically went down as the new model took its place.

This year, we technically have the same situation (last-year model being discounted by $100), except that the last year’s model was repackaged in plastic and slightly improved. However, the public perception is that we now have TWO models to create buzz.

If we compare sales patterns for last-year models, I’m sure that this time around, there will be a significant improvement, and the last-year model (repackaged in plastic and now called 5C) will sell significantly better than last-year models did in prior years.

I am sure that Apple’s investment into re-engineering iPhone 5 into 5C and re-tooling manufacturing for this will be very quickly paid of by a significantly higher sales rates of 5C, compared to last-year models of prior years.

And I’m also sure there will be no significant cannibalisation of the 5S in favour of 5C. And even if there is some, it all still goes to Apple (as Schiller once said: “It is a good problem to have”).

I think that the bottom line of all this is that we’ll see a continued record-breaking sales numbers of the iPhones. And let’s not even talk about the holidays!

    1. Well said, but not everyone agrees. In fact, some believed that the “last year’s model” phones were selling too well because they looked just like the new ones. Now you can’t get the cheap phone and look like you’re cutting edge. And you can’t keep your 5 and look cutting edge because they’ve changed the colors just enough to make you look a year behind. This is why many are saying that the 5S will get more sales than it otherwise would have — because there’s no cheap way to get a model that looks the same.

      1. I don’t think Apple was that concerned about the cannibalisation of their top-tier model by the last-year model, since their margins were largely the same if not even better for last-year models (as the production costs drop over the months since introduction). About the only meaningful concern was the perception of value of the top-tier product, which would apparently be giving up sales to a year-old model. And with this plastic re-wrapping of the last-year model, that perception is not really important anymore, since both models are now new, so even distribution of sales wouldn’t tarnish the value of the top-tier model.

    2. Great points, pd. Along the same lines… I don’t see anyone talking about what happens NEXT year. The 4s goes away and now you have the 5c as the cheap/free phone, probably STILL with better margins than the 4s is getting now – and more desirable than the 4s to people looking for an inexpensive phone. The 5s becomes the new mid tier polycarbonate color phone – possibly in new colors with a fingerprint sensor… Some very, very smart, forward thinkers at Apple.

  11. There are several Chinese stores in NYC shipping 500 of iPhones to HongKong then smuggling them to mainland China in black market. Asian people like brand names luxury goods from the West. Chanel, Louis Vuiton stores full of Asian customers, of course iPhone is one of them, because they adored luxury products. Plenty of Mercedes, BMW cars parked along HongKong streets going no where because HongKong is very small. Westerners tended to opt for comfortable in Jeans and T-shirts.

  12. Apple didn’t reinvent the wheel…instead they laid the groundwork for the future of all smartphones…and at the same time, without missing a beat in already up to speed production, they recoated their now lower line version 5, jacked the battery and antenna, and offered it a hundred bucks cheaper, all while saving more than a hundred bucks per unit by not having to make the unibody aluminum case.
    That, folks, is ingenious.
Keep in mind, if they release a product today, they are already focused on version 6 for tomorrow, and with 64 bit, the path is laid better than any other company who depends on someone else for a processor upgrade and especially for the OS. Not to mention what the M7 coprocessor will turn the future into. With X-code support, developers can write an app across all devices including Macs.
Apple is inventing right in peoples face and they can’t see it!

  13. WoW what kind if crap article is this? People are so FUCKING negative on Apple they start to make up negative news and rumours when there are no real ones… So already, according to this idiot, Apple’s iPhone is a flop?
