Jefferies analyst Peter Misek expects ‘lackluster’ sales of Apple’s iPhone 5C

“Investors are hoping that Apple Inc will unleash some of its old magic when it takes the wraps off its latest iPhone on Tuesday, with many building bullish share and options positions,” Poornima Gupta and Doris Frankel report for Reuters. “In the past two weeks, Apple investors have bought almost twice the number of call options than puts on three major U.S. option exchanges.”

“Apple on Tuesday is holding a media event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where it is expected to launch an updated iPhone model – widely referred to as the iPhone 5S – as well as a cheaper version of the device dubbed the iPhone 5C,” Gupta and Frankel report. “Investors are hoping that in addition to the phone unveiling, the company will also announce it has finally penetrated the world’s largest wireless carrier China Mobile Ltd , which has over 740 million users.”

MacDailyNews Take: Heh, heh, they said “penetrated.”

Gupta and Frankel report, “Jefferies analyst Peter Misek expects choppy trading of Apple shares following the event as he expects ‘lackluster’ sales of the phone. ‘Lack of differentiation, elongating replacement rates, and smartphone growth shifting to the very low-end below the iPhone 5C price point’ are the negatives, he said.”

MacDailyNews Take: iCal’ed.

Gupta and Frankel report, “While many options investors are taking an optimistic view, expecting Apple to build on recent gains that have driven the stock up nearly 25 percent since the end of June, some analysts cautioned the market may be overpricing expected volatility in Apple shares. Ryan Detrick, senior technical analyst at options research firm Schaeffer’s Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio, said that in the past 10 trading sessions beginning Aug. 23, investors bought 1.98 call options on Apple compared with every put option purchased as a new position, citing data from three major U.S. options exchanges. That call-to-put ratio is higher than 94 percent of the readings over the past year, he said. ‘This optimism sets a rather high bar and any disappointment could lead to profit taking or selling,’ Detrick said.”

    1. Apple had surprisingly strong sales of the old iPhone 4, for the existing (2012) lineup. This is two-generation-old design being sold as new. It was popular as the “best value” choice.

The iPhone 5C is a brand new design that is expected to be the replacement for the iPhone 4 (the low-end iPhone choice) in the next lineup. How can it NOT be successful?

      1. It probably will be but the stunning luxurious design of the iPhone 4 is still a tantalising temptation for many. The phone exudes glamour, beauty and unparalleled design. It’s the best looking phone Apple ever made and it sure beats plastic

    2. No kidding: Click the tag link for Peter Misek above and just scan down the headlines and dates. This guy’s prognostications are kind of like midwest directions: “Go about 6 miles down John’s Road and turn left at ol’ Harry’s barn that burned down in ’67 — ya can’t miss it.”

  1. I work in the financial sector. The analysts give themselves away. The investment firms who are writing the call options LOSE if Apple rises.

Notice the tone in the last week, it suddenly turned negative as soon as China Mobile and DoCoMo became real possibilities. Why? Because they wrote (sold) lots of call options, and when Apple rises they stand to lose Millions (maybe Billions)….

Pay close attention to the stock and analyst comments, they will do anything to keep the stock down.

        1. Until that lying, conniving, war-mongering dirtbag is out of office anyone with any sense should take every opportunity to deride his pansy ass. So go ahead and keep that empty head of yours up your butt where it usually resides fool.

        2. And what good does that do? Is your online bitching going to get him out of office any faster? No! All it does is stifle actual discussion about topics that are completely unrelated to him, and piss people like me off who want to have those discussions unrelated to him.

        3. Thanks, X.
You sure nailed him. You swore and called him names, all within just five words! Your insightful use of the English language is an inspiration. Yer a veritable Shakespeare.

        4. He is beginning to make more and more sense as time goes on, in a twisted, crabbed, prophetic kind of way. But you’re right, the SEC is disgraceful, reprehensible, useless and graceless, colluding with thieves. Abolish it.

        5. Bullshit, has, botvinnik is just a prick, plain and simple. Sorry to be crass, but botvinnik is a cancer on this forum and does not deserve even grudging support for a stupid comment like that.

        6. @KingMel re botvijerk
          Agreed. And then some.

“He is beginning to make more and more sense as time goes on”
I would disagree, hannah. To make “more and more sense”, he’d have to be actually making some kind of point, with “sense” behind it — i.e. a structure of logic and rational argument.
The vast majority of botvijerk’s posting are simply a shot of mean-spirited invective, either at someone on the forum or at Obama.

        7. So you don’t sense a history, a purpose, a life theme, behind botvinnik’s expressions? You haven’t been able to integrate his challenging equations? I would expect a bit more depth from you.

        8. In that sense, I do. But his behavior is infantile. It’s easy to pout and stomp and criticize politicians; it’s astronomically more difficult to build anything better. So I would challenge the idea of “purpose”, because someone with any degree of maturity anywhere above a tantrum throwing four-year-old will modify his behavior to attain that purpose — and NO-ONE is influenced by having shit dumped on them. Hence any “purpose” is not worth speaking of. I would challenge the idea of “challenging equations”. I think you give him far too much credit with that concept. I think you have read too much into his emotional vomit. He’s just not that deep.

Vast numbers of people have a low opinion of both sides of the political spectrum. Vast numbers of people are not taken in by the games of the ultra-rich. Big deal. Botvijerk presents no insight, no structure of persuasion, no NEWS. (And if he did, I’d still want him to go away and share his thoughts on some political forum.)

Here are some examples of his “life theme”, addressed to various people. This was just on one day.
          That’s fucking nuts.
          fuck you
          fuck you
          once again, jimg, another jackass
          fuck you
          You are an idiot.
          you are mentally ill.
          ..and you are a shill
that is because you are blind

He has nothing of value to offer anyone.
And if he did, he shouldn’t be offering it here, anyway.

        9. I respect your contribution to the ongoing analysis of what constitutes botvinnik. I hope you respect that his voice is representative of many others who recede into the sidelines. In other words, he actively, perhaps rudely, intrudes into the political conversation, or injects politics into what we might have assumed to be aloof from such tawdry concerns.

Apart from his insufferable attitude, there is much to recommend in his libertarian stance: freedom, self-expression, suspicion of authority and opposition to war.

        10. I do understand your indignation and opposition to botvinnik’s minimalist rants. He doesn’t go on and on, simply codifies his objections in the least number of words, much like Ty Cobb spiking a base runner and saying, “one less to score later”.

It’s all a game. Nasty, perhaps, but that brutish element is there, like it or not.

        11. His objections to the state of the world don’t excuse his behavior, any more than having a particular political view excuses the behavior of a schoolyard bully, wife beater or neighborhood thug.

There is nothing to recommend in his stance. Large numbers of people thank similarly. It is not a rare precious jewel in a huge pile of rancid cow shit. He knows, thinks and says nothing special.

And one doesn’t build a more just society by shitting all over everyone at the tiniest perceived excuse.

“It’s all a game. Nasty, perhaps, but that brutish element is there, like it or not.”
That’s too much like “That’s just how things are.” No, his behavior is a choice. Would you say the above about a man beating his wife? His behavior is a CHOICE – a small-minded, thoroughly nasty, jerk choice.

        12. Funny, my nightmare’s been going on since 2000.

Who knows? Maybe in 2016, we’ll actually elect someone WORTHY of the office and who won’t seek to systematically destroy this country like Bush and Obama.

          One can dream …

        13. I’m a bit anti contemporary American politics. And the difference is, I don’t go into discussions about AAPL stock manipulation and tech analysts and turn it into a discussion (or shitfest, more like, since little real discussion happens on this site) about politics. But since y’all have gone and pissed me off–and tried to put me down as being an Obama supporter–I’ve gone and sunk to this low level.

      1. Knowing how analysts lie is half the battle. We KNOW Apple stock. What we learn from how they treat Apple Stock is a great indicator is how they treat the rest of them. It’s an eye opener really.

        1. I want SOME governing body to step in and stop this gross case of stock manipulation that’s been going on with Apple (and, undoubtedly, many other companies) for years. Tech analysts and big investors manipulate the media to get the stock to move in whatever direction they want, then reap the rewards.

  2. And right underneath this article in apple investor news was, “AAPL:Icahn says No-Brainer, just like NFLX at $58″…….., I’ll go with Icahn and Einhorn as well as Soros, as opposed to this Samsung paid D-bag.

    1. Apple is no Netflix. Apple has never had a P/E ratio like Netflix. Apple could easily have done what Netflix is doing but I guess it chose not to, although I don’t know why. Netflix is being valued all out of proportion. I would not consider Apple a no brainer when it comes to value. AAPL currently is being highly mis-valued so I see it as a very risky investment if any investor is hoping for the share price to rise in Netflix proportions.

      1. You got it completely backwards, LB. The fact that AAPL has a low P/E relative to its actual performance makes it a value play. I don’t know why you think AAPL is a risky investment.

In contrast, a P/E of 300+ means that a company is expected to rapidly and massively increase its earnings. If it comes up even a bit short of those lofty expectations, then its P/E might drop significantly and the share price would tank accordingly. Besides, Netflix has growing competition and the barriers to entry are relatively low. Contrast that to Apple’s competitive positions with respect to the iPhone, iPad, etc.

I don’t understand your position at all.

  3. Peter Lynch and many others say don’t listen to analyst. Go for value fundamentals or stock indices but most never listen. I do better than my financial advisor on buying and holding a 2-3 stocks after 2-4 years. Not fast money but it works for me.

    1. Lesson for tomorrow? BLN is on one of his rampages and has locked onto iOS 7 as the target of his disdain. BLN’s opinion of iOS 7 seems to be far more negative than the far more thoughtful and in-depth reviews that I have read over the past couple of months. This sounds like more of BLN’s irrational crusade against the redesigned iOS 7 icons. They are just icons…get over it you testicle.

Tomorrow will be fine for Apple. And Apple will continue to release serial barrages of new products over the coming months. Apple’s first fiscal quarter is going to be unbelievably awesome and the strength will continue into next calendar year.

  4. said that in the past 10 trading sessions beginning Aug. 23, investors bought 1.98 call options on Apple compared with every put option purchased as a new position, citing data from three major U.S. options exchanges. That call-to-put ratio is higher than 94 percent of the readings over the past year

    Where’s a window I can jump from?

So Apple is all about PUTS and and CALLS and RATIOS blahblahblah. Y’all have fun with your game playing. Bullish or bullshit, BFD for you, analcysts.

I’m more interested in the REAL Apple, the wonderful company these dumbasses cannot comprehend.

    1. Don’t despair, Derek. Come tomorrow—when nascent, sparkling objects of lust pulsate through the dulled blogosphere—the world will come alive again. The bean counters will be muted, their tongues excised, for a time.

  5. I may be an Apple shareholder and fanboi with clouded judgment but rationally speaking there’s no chance of the iPhone 5C having lackluster or mediocre sales. China Mobile wants the 5C for a reason and I’m sure that reason is that there are many Chinese consumers who would like to own iPhones. How would it be possible to have three major carriers in China and iPhone 5C sales end up being lackluster? Using a term as lackluster is too vague. Are we talking 1 million units being lackluster or 5 million units being lackluster. If the iPhone could reach even a conservative number of only 5% of China Mobile’s 740 million subscribers, that is still an awful lot of iPhones being sold. I really don’t see how Misek could be so pessimistic if he is actually telling what he truly believes.

I don’t see the point of him giving such a negative view so soon to the release of the 5C. This reasoning of how all Chinese consumers only want cheap Android smartphones is something I just don’t understand. I’m not saying every Chinese consumer can afford or wants an iPhone but the Chinese are still interested in branded products and I feel sure if the iPhone becomes more affordable, there will be many consumers purchasing iPhones. I’m not concerned over what Misek is saying because I truly believe he is wrong in his judgment.

    1. You’re praying that he’s wrong in his judgment. Face it: you’re nervous over what will happen tomorrow, and the day after. But never fear. The pundits will fail once again, and Apple will reward the faithful. This is the company that has defied expectations time and again. The day they fail to do that is the day you and I retire, LaughingBoy.

      1. Precisely. Investing should never involve hoping and praying. Loving Apple products and investing in AAPL are two entirely different things. And they should be kept separate. One year ago the iPhone 5 was introduced and the stock started its long decline. I don’t see that happening tomorrow. Although the stock generally is yanked around a lot after earnings and new product announcements. That could happen but I don’t see any precipitous drop in AAPL in the immediate future. I believe the fingerprint sensor will help sales of the 5S. I believe the 5C will do quite well especially when it becomes available on China Mobile. But I believe the 5C will do quite well outside of China also. There is a fine line that Apple doesn’t want to cross by having the 5C erode sales of the 5S. Only time will tell how well that turns out. And who knows, perhaps the margins on the 5C will be high enough that it won’t matter? Buy a new iPhone and a new iPad. But be wise with your money. Just because you love a company doesn’t mean you can’t lose money by investing in it. Happens every day. Diversify your investments.

  6. It does seem to me that cheap, plastic iPhones risk diluting Apple’s brand. It goes against what Steve Jobs’ mission was, in his later years. Apple proved that if you produce a premium product with excellent features and quality materials, people would pay for it – even if they have to sacrifice for it. But I’m not sure how many of those people would by a cheaper version that looks much less stylish. The iPhone 4 and 4S continue(d) to sell because they were still gorgeous devices, as well as being cheaper. I fear that Apple’s chasing margins, and that’s a bad sign.

  7. He might be right if they can’t do something about the price. The 5C needs to be a clear value case. Not plastic for a premium. It needs to set the 5S up as the clear luxuray bad-ass phone that it is. Sorry, but the 5C needs to be the people’s phone (no China pun intended – ok, yes, intended!)
