Apple preps for customers’ iOS 7 shock

“How would you react if you found a notice on your smartphone that an update to its software was available, and after you accepted it, the interface looked completely different? If you didn’t know this was coming, would you be shocked, maybe even upset?” Dwight Silverman asks for The Houston Chronicle. “That’s a very real possibility with the upcoming overhaul to Apple’s mobile operating system.”

“iOS 7 will have a different interface, along with a slew of new features and tweaked ways of doing things,” Silverman reports. “While techies and Apple fans know this is coming, a huge number of folks who own iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches and who do not obsessively track geek news are going to be taken by surprise.”

Silverman reports, “Even if Apple accompanies the on-phone iOS update notification with detailed warnings that iOS 7 is more than just a software tweak, the clueless are likely to be freaked out. As a result, Apple has started training its support staff to handle what I’ll call iOSTSD (iOS Traumatic Stress Disorder).”

    1. iOS advises users that an update is available on the device and if they go to Settings they will see that and update is available. Helps in keeping up there adoption rate numbers.

        1. Hmm. Providing a valuable service, gratis, to prevent the wholesale waste of time of so many unsuspecting readers? A novel concept, but subject to valuation bias. E for Effort, regardless.

      1. I thought your judgement was a joke in the beginning, but if you think you are serious about it then….
Sorry to interrupt your trainwreck of thoughts about others. I don’t know you and you surely don’t know me.

Look me into my eyes when I tell you this, because I’m just going to say this once, just this once. YOU couldn’t be more wrong.
Trying to tell others (you could never fool me) that an Apple fan since 1987 is a troll, is not only bad judgement but more likely lack of insight into others.
But, you yourself are acting out like a splitter, which is another type of trolling, just trolling in disguise.
Yes, please look it up in the dictionary because I’m afraid you will not recognize otherwise (denial).

        1. Yes 🙂 understanding is almost always for the good, hopefully for you also. Agree on the point that you are seeing too many trolls at once, but that’s because you are on the wrong side, the Ass… side, Troll.

      1. The pre-shock wave that passed through here, when iOS 7 was shown at WWDC, was indeed varied. Such is the initial reaction to any really radical tech.

The more frenzied of iOS 7 critics (those who decry its Barbie-doll look) likely won’t go silent until widespread adoption transforms the sassy colours from du jour to de facto. Everyone else will somehow soldier on.

        1. You know, I didn’t like iOS 7 when I saw the still shots from the keynote. But once I was able to get home and watch it and I saw the Jony Ive video, I was hooked. This is definitely the right direction for the OS (with the trivial exception of some icons). Also, in addition to the cosmetic, iOS 7 provides developers with some very nice new APIs that should bring some amazing apps.

        1. Evidently, I should have ended my post with a “/s”.

My point was that X’s venom is usually wider ranging and laced with a stream of obscenities, rather than a single expletive.

    1. Listen Miley, your antics at the VMA’s were controversial enough. You don’t need to further “prove” yourself by typing over the top comments on an Apple news website.

    2. X,
Thanks SO much for your insightful contribution. Your thinking is like a laser, cutting to the heart of the matter, illuminating the issues like a veritable searchlight of wisdom. I’m sure everyone will join me in expressing how lucky we consider ourselves that you are here to post these great thoughts.

      1. A fandroid is somebody who raves about what we think is an inferior rip-off OS.

X is far, far, far different from that. It takes a special kind of poisonous little fuck to write, “… chump boss thankfully died of cancer”.

    3. Christ, x, but you really are a truly spectacular example of a really vile, and deeply offensive, Internet troll.
It’s the wish of my heart that you actually find yourself being diagnosed with something that will ultimately, but over not too long a period of time, prove terminal, which might, possibly, give you cause to reflect on your apparent glee that someone died of cancer.
      Eat shit and die, x.

  1. Regular users will not care one bit if things look different as long as they can do what they are used to doing… And if even a few things they do are improved they will be ecstatic.

    1. You are not exactly right here.

My wife still doesn’t know how to pick up my phone and use it. She get confuse by how totally different the camera and iPhoto apps look and operate.

We are talking here abou initial reactions.

If Apple forces an update to iOS7 without first letting users operate a test drive (maybe make a web site or training video), Apple support lines will be flooded with support calls, long lines at the Apple store, and millions of frustrated users.

Once the initial shock goes away, users will love iOS7. I didn’t like it at first, but it grows on you.

IMHO, Apple should NOT auto-update 4S’s to iOS7. Make the user choose.

I am in the fence for auto update on 5.

More fragmentation? Maybe. But Apple just can’t afford bad press.

Either way it will be bad. Not auto update: complaints and criticism. Auto update: complaints and criticism.

What is the lesser I two evils? I think the former.

      We shall see…

      1. “Apple just can’t afford bad press”

Has there been any other kind?

For a company as reviled as Apple, its commercial triumphs have proved the superiority of individuals thinking for themselves to monolithic institutions with shady and self-serving agendas who have tried to shape public perception with the surreptitious use of a once-independent press.

That approach has worked when promulgating political or religious ideas, and can demolish a movie’s chances at the box office; but has failed whenever the common person has been left alone to hold an actual iPhone &etc. in his/her hand and make a personal judgment based on intimate user experience, irrespective of hearsay and bad press.

  2. While the visuals maybe different.. the gestures, button positions, methods of doing things will still be the same (with a few added features). The shock will last a moment – when first seeing it – but will quickly fade away as someone begins to use it.

Analysts are trying to portray this change to Windows 8, however, it is a far cry from what Microsoft did to their user base. Everything about the interface was different and very frustrating for a lot of “normal” people who had gotten used to the desktop.

When Apple first released the Mac, they included a mouse tutorial that started playing when the user first turned on their computer. This basic little tutorial allowed them to USE the computer without any other instruction.

Microsoft should’ve done the same with Windows 8.

    1. I don’t think any of that was on his mind when he designed the UI… I think his main goal was to piss you off… Like everything else he does, he did an excellent job.

      Go Ive!!!

    2. Most people who come here to get their daily KOOL AID are clueless morons who like to wear pink underwear that goes really well with iOS 7.

Most likely King Obozo voters, they like him and shit for desert!

    3. Wow. Who let in all the Assmung fanboys? It’s like the evening shift of the Assmung and Google marketers union all logged in at once to spread their poorly formed talking points.

      1. Yelling nonsense towards others doesn’t make you any less of a troll than those whom you blame.

Try this for a change if you dare, stop yelling and see what’s left inside.

  3. It does look very different but it looks easier to use and almost everyone will be able to figure it out quickly. I’m sure Apple isn’t going to hide the “start” button or make you hit the “start” button to turn off the phone.

  4. Give me a break! WE ARE CREATURES OF BOREDOM when it comes to hi tech. We always want change. It’s something we like to explore, embrace, deplore and critique. And then after we are done, WE WANT MORE! It’s not like iOS 7 takes a steep curve to learn it. Apple made sure we could grasp it. Heh! There are those who don’t, they will switch to some cheap knock off and realize they should come back and adapt iOS7 anyways!

  5. All I know is, iOS7 looks like it was designed to appeal to young girls. I won’t be upgrading my phone to it no matter how many bells and whistles it has over iOS6.

Tutty-fruity fluorescent hippy looking colors. Puke…

    1. Really? They changed the colors of their icons and you refuse to use the OS because of that? I seriously doubt anyone is really that ignorant to believe that a few Apple icons is going to change the entire look of an OS and make it girly.

Please tell me everything that makes it look girly to you? There’s only one thing that’s changed to bright colors… the icons on the home screen. So far, all the home screen shots have only shown Apple’s icons… when you fill it up with other icons and different wallpaper, it’s going to look a lot less “bright”.

Nothing else in the interface looks at all “girly.”

      Get a grip!

      1. and…

Personally, I think, that given Jony Ive is a hardware designer he thinks about hardware all the time… and since they decided to use a strict color palette, this could very well give them the ability to change the tone of the system colors depending on the color of the hardware…

White iPhone, the system palette is softened – colors are lightened.

Black iPhone, the system palette is made harder – colors are darkened.

This would be very easy to do, since system defined colors in Cocoa are objects, not constants.

I also find it odd that ALL shots of iOS 7 are from a White iPhone and you never see a black iPhone… has anyone else noticed that?

        1. I think you are right!
just see the possibility of Inverting the colors in the 7 beta and the changing colors depending on the background pict/color. My otherwise tablegreen homescreen turns pink and the icons change into their inverted colors accordingly!

I would guess Apple goes the whole way with even different palettes for different phone colors. That will be the surprise in the final version, just for the pleasure to quit the negative critics to the bright girly color palettes presented.

      2. Michael,

Sorry but it just looks like it was designed for a young girl’s tastes. The colors are in fact annoying to me. I much prefer iOS 6’s colors and look. I’m an electrical engineer, not a Miley Cyrus fan teeny booper…

And don’t take this as I’m a troll attacking Apple, I’ve been an Apple fan since before the days Steve Jobs came back to Apple. Just got a new MBP a few months ago. In fact, I’m worried that this ugly look is going to hurt sales. We saw what happened to windows 8 with its ugly looking interface…

I’m a big fan of OSX (but I don’t like the iOSization of it). And I like IOS6 for the iPhone as long as it looks professional.

And if you’re right that the black iOS7 will have a different looking icon scheme or colors, then i’ll gladly eat crow (if I like it…).

        1. Then go fuck yourself and post on an Android or Assmung site. You and Left Nut have contributed nothing remotely amusing to this site in all the years I’ve been reading and posting here.

        2. If only Apple would let us move the icons to just about wherever we want.

But, noooo, those cursed bastards are forcing us to have those retina-burning color vomits all on one page.

          Idiot.

        3. And, I call bullshit on you being an electrical engineer. You can’t possibly be that well-educated and still be so stupid. Or, perhaps I’m wrong, and you’re pioneering new ways of being a moron.

        4. Show us how the new icon designs are different in colour palette to the old ones, then. The only significant change, that I can see is that the glossy sheen, to make the icons look like a shiny enamel button, has been removed, making the appearance ‘flat’, otherwise the background colours are fundamentally the same.
The pastel background is something that most will change to a personal favourite, rendering your argument void.
Add to that the fact that most users will automatically rearrange their home screen into folders, and move apps that aren’t used, like stocks and weather, in my case, then your argument has even less value. Try actually thinking with your rational brain for once, instead of coming across like a whiney little girl over such an inconsequential feature.

        5. “Ugly” is in the eye of the beholder. There are many, many, people who hate the way iOS looks now. It is IMPOSSIBLE to please everyone at the same time, so the best thing to do is just please yourself and hope others like it as well. Your opinion of iOS 7 has nothing to do with how well it will do.

Windows 8 is a failure, not because of how it looks, but rather how it works. It was drastically changed to the point that users who upgraded to it couldn’t figure the damned thing out and it led to customer confusion and frustration to the point the Microsoft is making it optional in 8.1.

iOS 7 basically functions the exact same way it did before. The user interface has changed not the user experience. That’s a huge difference. As an example, look at the lock screen… while the little tab is gone, it’s the EXACT same gesture to dismiss the lock screen and bring up the home screen.

I honestly don’t think anyone is going to care about the “girly” colors – iOS 7 is going to be a huge leap forward in interface design and experience.

  6. On the one hand you have people cussing like well diggers at the hell whole (sic) that is MS for foisting yet another piece of barely functional shit upon the world.

Other the other hand, the icons suck – I hate the colors – Pastel – flat – I’ll NEVER upgrade, etc ad nausium. But does it work!?

To each his/her own and I’ll support that to the end.

  7. The Apple haters’ 7 stages of grief go something like this:

    1) Predict failure of new Apple product
    2) Attribute early success of new Apple product to rabid fanbois affected by the reality distortion field
    3) Attribute longer term success of product to stupidity of consumers
    4) Purchase previously scorned product for stupid relatives so they stop bothering you to help support the open source version of Apple product sold by Super Lucky Technology Extreme Inc. that you convinced them to buy
    5) Purchase previously scorned product for yourself just to see what all the fuss is about
    6) Admit that you now own and use the product, but complain about the product’s lack of SD card slot on random Internet forum
    7) Forget prior criticism of product, claim that it was revolutionary and an example of how Apple used to be really innovative, but has now lost its edge

  8. I’m sure that some iOS developer will come up with an app to change the icons back to iOS6 colors and perhaps offer more options as well. Seems like there would be a market for it. 🙂

    1. Of course not! Why do you think we know how iOS7 is going to be in the final version.
Of course Apple will have options to change the palettes, just as we can now change the palettes to inverted colors, already in the latest developer version. Wee haven’t seen the whole or the last picture yet, not until the 7th of sept.

  9. What a humorous headlines:
“Apple preps for customers’ iOS 7 shock” and the resulting “iOSTSD (iOS Traumatic Stress Disorder)”.

That was really funny, and then later in his article he says “the clueless are likely to be freaked out”. This guy has really humor and enjoys writing his articles.
I suspect the really clueless will be, among many others, this article writer when he sees the final version, with different themes or different color palettes added.
I would surely like to be one of the smiling ones on the final presentation.

    Just think of this:
    – theme for the negative – sure to come
    – theme for the girly/pinky ones – already presented
    – theme for the manly – coming soon
    – them for the boys – coming soon
    – theme for women – coming soon
    – and a theme for the clueless ones – best seen on Android

    1. It’s quite odd, really. For months Apple suffered a riptide of criticism for boring consumers with stale tech. Then, after the WWDC unveiling of iOS 7, the criticism morphed into its polar opposite: the design was too different, sure to alienate regulars and confuse newbies.

Probably because computing moved out of the lab and the office and became so personal, tech blogging/reporting has come to resemble a divisive political arena, where stakes are high, emotions run hot, and truth is scarce. Just about the only real satisfaction comes from sitting back with the popcorn and watching the show until the clown car crashes.

      1. Well said hannahjs… I like many of the new features of iOS7 and I would not want to give them up to go back to 6. I thought the colors were an odd choice at first, but I like the functionality of almost everything in the new OS better. Of course it is up to everyone to decide what they want and be happy with their choice 😉

  10. A free, brand new OS for your iPhone if you want it. Sounds good to me.

The number of Android owners who are given the option to install a new OS for their Android phone are less than 10%.

The negativity is all coming from jealous Android users.

      1. So you have it on your iPhones and your iPads do you?

Or are you one of those guys, who can give an intelligent review of a new OS, by looking at internet photos, without ever using it on your own hardware?

I have a feeling you are stuck with an Android device you can’t upgrade.

        1. A good friend of mine downloaded it onto his 4S…I’ve had extensive exposure to it. Absolutely atrocious in my opinion. What I don’t understand is why so many of you get so butthurt simply because not everyone likes what you like. If you like iOS 7, fine; more power to you. I think it is disgusting…how about you all stop being so insecure and accept the fact that not everyone enjoys what you enjoy ok??? 😊

      2. Despise? LOL. Oh well, some people like liver.

Personally, I think iOS6 looks as archaic as my wife’s 4S feels in the hand compared to my 5 running 7. Even still dealing with some of the minor bugs that I’m sure they’ll work out in the GM, it is a MAJOR step forward.

        1. MAJOR step forward? Oh well some people think Obama is a major step forward.

Aside from not bringing anything new or revolutionary to the table
(Most if the “new” features of iOS 7 have been available for years via the jailbreak community) iOS 7 brings a washed-out, girly, absolutely hideous new look. It rivals Windows 8 as the worst UI redesign in my opinion….but to each his own I suppose

    1. Some of the negativity is coming from Apple regulars set in their ways, some from switchers attracted by iOS 6, both unhappy with the changes. Cook tossed Ive the live grenade. Ive pulled the pin. When the smoke clears, we can assess the damage.

  11. Since the IOS will look different but work the same I seriously doubt there will be anyone that is going to freak out about it.
Apple isn’t going to pull a Microsoft Winblows 8 and remove key parts of the IOS. This is just pure FUD.

  12. Haha – nope. Apple doesn’t make big changes to anything any longer, they do small bumps year after year, numbing us with their lack of vision now that Steve is gone. The “new” iOS has a different font and my little pony colors that appeal to Japanese teenage girls. Nobody is going to freak out over how it works (still basically the same) only that the design is ugly. It’s very easy to field those calls in a “support” center.

    1. I like your handle, it really works. Come back again soon. We need a few laughs now and then, being as how we’re all so depressed about Apple circling the drain and all. The only good news lately is that there are a lot of Japanese teenage girls.

  13. this kind of article makes me tired because nobody really cares about changing UI for usual customers. shock? that’s funny. apple already lost innovative, surprise mind shortly after Steve Jobs was gone.
