  1. I bought an Apple AirPort Express (Gen. 1 – the one with integrated transmitter and power plug) and just for laughs I bought a TP-Link wireless router to act as a backup in case the AirPort Express failed. The TP-Link router broadcast at 2.4GHz and the AirPort Express was reserved to broadcast at 5GHz (no dual band capability) for a cleaner signal as that would be the channel that my Mac and iPad latched on to. I would also carry the AirPort Express with me to hotels and conference rooms when I travelled as it was a compact package and the TP-Link wireless router would then serve as the primary in its (and my) absence.

The funny thing is I bought the TP-Link as the backup router but it failed before the AirPort Express. Way before. I have had the AirPort Express now for going on 2 years and it’s still going strong with regular software updates. I have now purchased another AirPort Express (Gen. 2 – the one with the flat top) and now use the Gen. 1 AE to act as a link extender, a job which it is doing very well still.

  2. When Apple comes out with an Airport Express that supports 802.11ac I’ll buy a new Airport Extreme and two new Airport Express units. Yes, 802.11ac has higher data rates, but when you have lots of walls, fireplaces and slate floors between your main unit (the Extreme) and the far flung rooms 802.11ac gets 100% lost. There’s no sense in upgrading to the new Extreme base station until there are Express units to go with it.

  3. I have the, I believe its gen 2 Expess. Its great. I had a connectivity issue, but think that was a Comcast issue or my son creating a proxy server for some dumb game.
All I know is it does way better then the Belkin and NetGear ones I’d used in the past.
Thinking of getting the Extreme, but not sure if I really need it or if I’d notice much of a difference.

  4. Hmm, I’ve had the issue where my iPhone drops the WiFi connection at home. I resolve it by turning off cellular data. I’ve always assumed that it was something to do with iOS 6, but maybe this firmware fix will solve the problem.

    1. Had that problem as well just after I updated the phone. I also had a volume control problem. As it turns out a visit to the local Apple Store got the phone swapped out even though it was about a month out of warranty.

  5. So, why is it we need to reboot the dang thing to apply changes! password for “Back to my Mac” changes, apply new password and REBOOT. Change absolutely anything, and you have to REBOOT. What is this, Windows XP based…

  6. We have an Extreme and an Express. The Extreme broadcasts throughout the house. The extreme is used as a receiver in a remote office where a Mac Pro without Airport capability resides. The Mac Pro is plugged into the Express with Cat 5 cable, and connects to the Extreme through it. The Express also acts as a repeater, extending the range of the Extreme in that area of the property.

    1. Damn I wish we had “edit” capability….

  7. I just received the notification for this update. I click update and a few minutes later received a error code that started with a 6 (didn’t get the rest) and now my time capsule is no responding no do I have Internet. Tried resetting and still nothing.
