Stream any video from your Mac to an Apple TV

“One of the most interesting features of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is AirPlay Mirroring,” Kirk McElhearn writes for Kirkville.

“You can stream what is displayed on your Mac to an Apple TV (and, presumably, other devices will support this in the future),” McElhearn writes. “This is very useful if you want to watch videos in formats that iTunes doesn’t support, such as MKVs. The process is quite simple.”

McElhearn writes, “The only thing to be aware of is that if you want to pause the video, you need to do so on the Mac; the Apple TV remote won’t do this. If you have another remote, you can pair it to your Mac, so if you plan to use this feature often you can easily pause and restart videos.”

  1. Was hoping for some new revelation or useful app that didn’t involve Airplay Mirroring, but nope. The article may have a publish date of today, but even the comments in it are over a year old.

      1. From what I have read, I’m no video expert…
        Mkv supports dts, m4v doesn’t.
Mkv supports a ton of subtitles in same file, and custom fonts etc. m4v doesn’t.

Beyond that the video isn’t really an issue.

I don’t have dts, and I’m ripping from a blu ray or acquiring by other means.. If I *want* dts etc.. I’ll watch the blu ray.

        Personal preference IMO.

99% of my video watching is done from either my iMac, my iPad, or my tv in the bedroom… With internal speakers. I don’t need anything “better”

You may be right, again I’m no video expert, but the HD “quality” isn’t a big issue for me.

        1. What you’ve listed is what I’m talking about. “HD video” wasn’t the best choice of words, “HD media” is a better option. The subtitles thing is what makes it superior for me, but yes, it supports better/more audio as well.

  2. What’s so different about this … AirPlay ios is great but we educators and others) NEED an ios Bluetooth remote control device.

Why won’t Apple allow a simple third party remote to operate Keynote on the iPad?!?!?!?!?

    Please

    1. I’ve been critical of Apple’s pathetic support for education and professional markets for a long time now. I honestly think that Apple leadership is losing touch with their roots.

… and no, iOS7 and a thinner iGadget won’t solve the huge holes in Apple’s product portfolio. Apple needs to redouble its efforts to develop the Mac platform (again).

  3. I just got an Apple TV and works pretty good. The only thing is this talks about pairing the remote with the computer. I had sold my MacBook Pro to my son and whenever if scroll up and down on he Apple TV, it would control his iTunes and change his volume. We had to turn off the remote feature on the Mac to stop this. Way irritating.

  4. Maybe one of you can tell me how to use the Xfinity app on the iPad and have it mirror to the AppleTV. I tried this and it said that app was only allowed on mobile devices.

  5. The solution for those with older Macs is Beamer. Get it from macupdate.com. I’ve been using it for 6 months now, every evening and I’m 100% satisfied. I recommend it without reservations. It works like a charm. I should also mention it handles subtitles in srt format (for those who need Bulgarian subs or something)

  6. I use the Air Video app that streams video from my Mac to my iPad and then Air Play to my Apple TV. It works flawlessly and I can control it right from the iPad.

  7. in the perfect world, one would stream content from any Mac or iOS device directly to any audio/visual system without the need for a box inbetween. Is Airplay licensing too expensive?

Why doesn’t every HDTV accept streaming from Macs today?
