Apple acquires crowdsourced location data company Locationary

“Last September Grant Ritchie, CEO of crowdsourced location data company Locationary, penned an article for TechCrunch describing five challenges Apple faces as it builds out its new mapping service,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD. “Ten months later he’s become part of the effort to overcome them.”

“Apple has acquired the Toronto-based Locationary, a small Canadian startup, backed by Extreme Venture Partners and Plazacorp Ventures,” Paczkowski reports. “Multiple sources familiar with the deal tell AllThingsD it closed recently and includes Locationary’s technology and team, both. The price of the acquisition couldn’t immediately be learned. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling confirmed the deal.”

Paczkowski reports, “Apple’s plans in this case are fairly obvious: beef up its new mapping service… Locationary is a sort of Wikipedia for local business listings… Not only does Locationary ensure that business listing data is positionally accurate… it ensures that it is temporally accurate as well.”

  1. Given all the shit that’s been going on in the US over the past 20 years, I doubt very seriously that Canada – or any other country for that matter – wants to be like the US.

  2. Just curious:
Does anybody bother reporting ‘incorrect data’ anymore to Apple Maps?

I’ve been reporting an incorrect POI since Maps launched and it’s still there to this day.

    Example:
    Denver, CO 80238
    Airports

    Displays: Stapleton International Airport

That airport closed over 10 years ago.

Not bashing Apple. It’s great for exact addresses. For POI’s – still have to use Google – unfortunately.

    1. Actually, I just tested this and it and I can’t see that it says anything about Stapleton Airport. It dropped the pin at Martin Luther King Blvd/Holly St.. Take out the “airports” and It just positions the pin slightly differently than the google pin. Check the business’ local to both pins and you find the same zip code.

    2. SInce day 1 posted stuff, including a major highway from Reno to Carson City (580) that opened up a year ago yet it still has not been added.
Or that the Truckee River just stops in the middle of Reno…
Or that Washoe County School District administrative offices are called “Homebound School”

None have been fixed yet Reno is where Apple is building its new data center here. Hmmm

  3. Canada is proud to NOT be the USA! We could have been part of you back in 1812 and the answer was a resounding NO. Ask any Canadian today and the sentiment is likely still the same.

    1. I know. Canada has universal, not-for-profit, single-payer healthcare and banks that don’t fail and crash their economy. The evidence is clear that Canadians are way smarter than the American voters.
