Trade Dress Infringement? ZTE debuts first Firefox OS phone in Spain; looks like a blue Apple iPhone

“The first Web-based Firefox mobile OS smartphones will be released soon in Spain and Poland, with more coming soon to other regions of the world, Mozilla announced Monday,” Matt Hamblen reports for Computerworld. “ZTE will begin selling the ZTE Open smartphone on Tuesday for the Spanish market through wireless carrier Telefonica, the companies announced in a statement, putting the equivalent price at about $90 with an agreement.”

“Chris Lee, director of the Firefox OS at Mozilla, said in a video that the One Touch and the Open are the world’s first HTML 5 smartphones,” Hamblen reports. “He demonstrated the use of the Firefox OS, and the use of the camera, as well as Facebook and the Here maps application. The video also describes a Firefox Marketplace, with a variety of apps for games, music, news and productivity”

Hamblen reports, “Ramon Llamas, an analyst at IDC, questioned how well a completely new OS will catch on in the U.S. with consumers. ‘It’s one thing to sell Android and an entirely different thing to sell a Firefox OS phone,’ Llamas said… ‘I can’t see Mozilla gaining any real traction [with Firefox OS] in North America, and minimal traction in other areas of the world,’ said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates.”

    1. Whether it looks similar to the iPhone or not, doesn’t really matter, it is competing against an iPhone that was discontinued several years ago.

For about the same amount of money, the user can get a more advanced iPhone, even though that iPhone is 2 years old.

      DOA

  1. How long after they’re introduced in the USA will one of the cell carriers be offering these Mozilla Phones for $0.99, FREE or “Buy one get 3 more”? Do the “also rans” ever learn from the previous mistakes?

  2. “’Chris Lee, director of the Firefox OS at Mozilla, said in a video that the One Touch and the Open are the world’s first HTML 5 smartphones,’ Hamblen reports.”

    In a word: Bullshit.

Steve Jobs, during the first year of the original iPhone’s run, stated that HTML 5 was purposely at the core of the iPhone’s graphics and video support in place of Flash. Safari in both iOS and OS X supports HTML 5 (as much as it can as the HTML 5 isn’t even 100% complete and issued yet) — have for years.

If he is saying that all apps run within an HTML 5 browser — well the original iPhone tried that too. It was replaced by much better stand alone Apps and the App Store.

  3. It’s made by ZTE… the Chinese government has their hands in it… step one in world domination…

It’s not enough that we have the NSA and Google to tend with already. The US govt. is upset because they now have data mining competition coming from the likes of China:

U.S. House Intelligence Committee: China’s Huawei, ZTE should be banned in U.S.

I actually like the idea of an OS made by Firefox, but seeing that this version is ZTE branded is a let-down. (I’d never buy a Firefox phone in it’s infant stages anyway, given the inherent lack of a diverse ecosystem.) Open source fans might adopt it, if they can be assured that China isn’t using this for Big Brother surveillance.

Blackberry should make a Firefox OS phone. I won’t buy that one, either.
