“A new shot published by Letemsvetemapplem — which has a credible history with Apple leaks in the past — suggests that Apple might make a major change to the home button in iPhone 5S, replacing the icon that exists there now with a big, glowing Apple symbol,” John Brownlee reports for Cult of Mac.
“On one hand, it seems a little unsubtle for Apple. A little too strongly branded,” Brownlee writes. “Apple usually places their logo on their devices so that it faces away from the device’s owner…”
MacDailyNews Take: Oh, really?
Brownlee writes, “Apple wants other people to know you’re using one of their products, not constantly bludgeon you with their brand.”
Full article here.
MacDailyNews Take: We don’t feel bludgeoned. Look at your Apple Magic Mouse and then flip it over – it’s one of the most heavily-used Apple devices ever made and it’s Apple logoed front and back.
Hey, why not. I don’t feel bludgeoned by the current square with rounded corners. It’d look cool and if Samsung wants to copy and put the apple logo on their home button, that’s cool too.
I agree, particularly because most cases cover up the Apple logo on the back.
Doubtful; not only because it is not subtle, but because Apple does not double-brand their devices.
I can not remember any Apple device with two significant Apple-logos on it.
So leave the one off the back.
uuuhhhh… I just turned my iMac around and there is an Apple logo there as well as one the front, would you like to rethink your statement sir?
Memory problem? Check the current Magic mouse, top and bottom. The new iMac, front and back.
Magic Mouse has logo on top and bottom.
iMac, Apple monitors, Apple TV, Mac Mini, Magic Mouse……
Yeah out side of those you might have a point.
All right, I stand corrected. I do not deal with those devices.
However, there is no small device that has legitimate position for being on either side that would have two Apple logos.
Mouse, Mini, TV have second logo on the bottom, which is not usually seen. iMac and monitors are huge.
But none of small devices that could be seen in use from all sides have double branding.
Bad enough you were plain wrong.
You look even stupider trying to defend yourself.
Best to just admit your mistake and move on.
I already admitted the part where I was wrong.
In other part, I am not wrong: there are no small Apple devices that are seen from various sides while in use that have more than one Apple logo.
This is Apple’s rule for more than ten years already through tens of models of that kind of devices.
This is why this rumour is doubtful.
Yea but you can’t see the back if the iPhone and the front of the iPhone at the same time… Soooo I’m pretty sure it’s still ok
Maybe he uses a mirror?
No one talked about seeing sides of devices in use at the same time, so it is not “OK” according to Apple.
Shoulda stopped at “I stand corrected”
iMac have two apple logos …
I can’t ever remember being bludgeoned by a logotype.
Bludgeoning can cause amnesia. Or a tumor.
We, who are long time readers of MDN, already realize that botvinnik was bludgeoned many times in his life. He now enjoys it and comes here several times a day to get more.
“Officer, that company over there bludgeoned me with its logo.”
Perhaps goes with Finger Print sensor.
Should have read full article prior to posting… Speculation as to FP sensor stated therein as well.
I wouldn’t mind if they lit up the apple logo on the back of the iPhone.
A clever way to identify/disguise a fingerprint scanner?
Disguise?
I prefer the logo on the back functioning as a fingerprint sensor and the whole front side as a display.
Probably not. Glowing requires power. Why waste power in a battery operated device on which you have spent a lot of effort trying to minimize power consumption.
The MacBook doesn’t use extra power to make its logo glow.
That’s because it’s taking advantage of the fact that the LED backlight is directly between the screen and the glowing Apple logo on the back.
In an iPhone, there is the battery, logic board, etc. between the display backlight and the back enclosure of the phone. You would need a separate dedicated light that takes up power and space just for the back logo.
Unless they embedded fibre optics.
True, but the logo is on the obverse side of the backlight, which is up against the outside of the lid. Not the case with the home button on the iPhone.
” Wake me up before you logo, don’t leave me hang in’ on …..”
Nah, sorry
And I worried it was only going to be an ‘S’ upgrade year!
iPhone users generally buy cases to put their phones in which covers the apple logo on the back of the device. While other manufacturers mimic the style and look of an iPhone, it becomes more difficult to determine which device is an Apple product verses a competitor. Putting the Apple logo on both sides will greatly help Apple’s brand awareness for the general public. A smart move.
Two words: Battery Life.
Bought the original iPhone (2007) and upgraded to 4S in 2011. My use about the same, possibly a tad more.
On a full charge I could go several days on the original and now with the 4S cannot make it through a day.
Apple needs to improve battery life in upcoming phones.
A blatant lie, tell lee Kun-hee he’s a disgusting, unethical slim bag, Ty in advance 😉
I think it’s fake. The apple is not well-centered vertically. Or, in other words, that button suffers from low-hanging fruit.
That makes more sense than anything I’ve heard in ages.
While they’re at it, bring back the Apple logo on the Command key (aka the Apple key). I hate that they removed it. Now when I tell people to “Apple-P to print” they get very confused.
this whole debate is fairly uninformed. Apple double brands, yes. but the home button is a…..uh….BUTTON. it implies an action.
ever wondered why Apple removed the cute little apple everybody (myself included) from the command button a couple of years ago?
(the) Apple is a brand, not an action. it’s used for branding, not button labeling.
Or maybe Apple needs a clear window for a fingerprint reader (for near-field communication-based e-commerce) and the window might as well be their Apple logo. Since such a window being swiped hundreds of times by a finger or thumb might eventually haze with microscratches, it may be the fingerprint reader window that will be made of sapphire—as previous rumors have suggested.
That is OBVIOSLY a fake. The apple logo pictured is not even the same proportions as the REAL logo.
I love looking at the apple logo !!!!
Now if they did that and it indeed did glow and it also was a notification light that would be awesome. I really hate that there’s no notification light.
Great idea. Plus it will act as the window for the fingerprint scanner!
Also offer more visibility to their logo with cases that hide the rear logo
As others have said it looks odd….but I would imagine that it may go with the rumors for a finger print scanner since its see through. Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
It’s not that it’s ‘strongly branded’ (great English, btw), it’s that it’s vain to toss the ‘Home’ icon, which actually means something (in the shape of app icons) in favour of a Vanity lisence plate, basically. The Apple icon is not a function!
