“Back in March, an MIT report suggested that Apple and other smartphone manufacturers could potentially switch to sapphire crystal displays rather than the standard Gorilla Glass displays currently in use,” Juli Clover reports for MacRumors.
“As it turns out, Apple has already experimented with sapphire screens,” Clover reports. “In an interview with Swiss news site Tages-Anzeiger, Vertu COO Perry Oosting revealed that Apple investigated the possibility of a sapphire display… [but] according to Oosting, Apple ultimately shelved the sapphire project because the material is unsuitable for production in the numbers that Apple requires at the current point in time.”

If you think that’s interesting, wait until you hear about the Microsoft store ,within the Best Buy stores, plan. Why doesn’t Ballmer just burn money in front of the Microsoft headquarters? Well, I guess that wouldn’t be as much fun to watch. I can’t wait for this. I haven’t been in a Best Buy store a long time but this will get me in. I can’t wait to see what this looks like. Oh boy!
GM, did you post this on the wrong article? I don’t understand how it applies even tangentially.
Its not a surprise to me, while it sounded interesting, I just didn’t think it was a realistic material to use in high volume.
Choosing a material is difficult. There is often one characteristic that sound P&S great but the other aspects of the material may not suffice. Diamond is the hardest material but we have yet to find diamond coatings on our iPhone screens. Probably cracks to easily or doesn’t adhere to the underlying material.
We need transparent aluminum. Damn it, where is Scotty when you need him? 🙂
Actually, it might scratch too easily. Perhaps transparent duranium or tritanium would be better.
And in the mean time it has many other uses for Apple. One day we might be able to get rid if the Gorilla Arm Glass.
