Apple stores offer iPhone 5 screen replacement for $149

“iPhone 5 owners can now get broken display screens replaced while they wait at Apple retail stores, in what could be the first step in a move to make repairs quicker and cheaper,” Doug Gross reports for CNN.

“An Apple Store employee confirmed by phone Tuesday that cracked iPhone 5 screens can now be replaced on site for $149,” Gross reports. “An Apple spokesperson later confirmed as much.”

Gross reports, “Previously, the repair would have required mailing in the phone and would have cost $229 for customers who hadn’t purchased the company’s AppleCare insurance.”

    1. Except that eBay third party screens void your warranty and are of lower quality.

Not only that but opening your iPhone and replacing the display has to be done in a ESD safe environment. And who knows what type of calibration/testing is supposed to be done following a screen installation.

I doubt the person selling you the screen cares.

  1. I had a small crack in my iPad and they wanted to bill me over $200 for it and I would swap iPads. No thanks. I paid 1 of 3 guys in a booth in the mall $150 and kept my eye on the iPad the hole time. This is something Apple should have been doing all along.

Late but nice to see they are in the game.

    1. Did the guys in a booth at the Mall remove the display on an ESD mat while strapped in to a grounding post? Your iPad’s internal parts have been compromised.
Apple charging you less than half price for a replacement is not a profit center, it’s a service.

  2. I work for an Apple Authorized repair center. We ordered non Apple replacement glass to offer our customers a more affordable solution (in addition for custom color choices). The glass was not of the same quality, so we chose not to order it again. The cheaper glass wasn’t as touch sensitive and fingerprints were substantially worse.

I personally wouldn’t put cheap glass on a premium phone unless it’s an older model. In this case we are talking about iPhone 5’s. For $150 it’s worth getting the proper glass installed in the proper manner.

  3. $150 without being covered by Apple Care warranty is a sweet deal. Our company purchases back the broken LCD from repair shops around the USA and this is really going to be stiff competition. There isn’t anyone offering iPhone 5 LCD replacement for under $150 in any retail repair shop around the US. Their all between $160-$200. In the past Apple’s repair prices haven’t seemed like a business model they wanted to focus on. I’m left scratching my head at what this could mean for their future plans to compete with the boom of iPhone repair shops. I suppose it might not be as big of a deal since there are only so many Apple Genius Bar locations nationwide.

  4. I found your post comments while searching Google. It is very relevant information. Great work. Regularly I do not make posts on blogs, but I have to say that this posting really forced me to do so. Really awesome post. Really fantastic and I will be coming back for more information at your site and revisit it! Screen Replacement .
