The CW expands streaming to Apple TV; First network to offer access without a cable subscription

“Like most other broadcasters this upfront week, CW execs [yesterday] urged advertisers to consider the network’s involvement with digital platforms — and announced that its streamed shows, now available on Windows and Xbox, will also work with Apple TV,” David Lieberman reports for Deadline. “This year we’re reaching more viewers on more platforms,” CW President Mark Pedowitz said during the CW presentation.”

Lieberman reports, “With more than 20% of the network’s audience coming from digital sources, CW ‘will continue to make it as easy for you [to advertise] on every platform we’re on now and in the future.'”

Rob LeFebvre reports for Cult of Mac, “The CW television network is bringing its television content to the Apple TV, the first network to do so directly, instead of via Netflix or Hulu. Even better, you won’t have to have a cable subscription to access the CW programming on Apple’s set top box, like many other content providers require.”

“According to MacRumors, the CW app will bring content similar to what the network already provides to XBox and other mobile platforms, with ads to support the programming rather than a cable subscription,” LeFebvre reports. “The shows will go live on Apple TV the day after they air on regular cable TV.”

“This is a vital next step for all of us cable-cutters, with stalwarts like HBO continuing to require users to log in to their cable subscriptions in order to view programming on the HBO Go mobile app,” LeFebvre writes. “We can only hope more networks find this to be a worthwhile move, as we all migrate to a more internet-based TV habit via Netflix, Hulu, and the Apple TV.”

        1. UPN belonged to CBS, Incorporated after the Viacom split and combined with the WB network to firm the CW as opposed to the WC.

        2. There’s small issue of timing with your scenario. Chriscraft then paramount (Viacom) joint with Chriscraft, then just Viacom. Then spun off to CBS anther child of Viacom sold off to Sumner Redstone. So now CBS part of National Amusements owns CBS, CW etc.

  1. Love The CW for the show Supernatural, and have been watching it for years on the iPad via Netflix and on my laptop via the CW website. This is a great development for Apple TV and Apple in general, and another chink in the wall of network television.

      1. or comedians, remember them…funny guys and gals that used to make us laugh but now only seem to offend the ever growing politically correct, blouse and frilly skirt wearing, nancy boy, pOOftas i call THE GENERAL PUBLIC!

    1. I’d be in favor if dumping the Hulu+ subscription fee for individual networks where ALL their content was subscription free if ad-supported. Or, alternatively I’d pay a subscription for ad-free access to their library of content. Just not both. Otherwise, I’m fine with Hulu+ if CBS and SyFy are fully added.

        1. Yes. To me Hulu+ suffers from the same cardinal sin as Cable TV. Ads for things other than upcoming programming on a subscription service. Personally, I enjoy commercials as an art form, but there are far too many and too many that have no relevance to me which wastes my time and interrupts the flow of the program.
