“South Korean police searched the offices of Samsung Electronics Co.’s display-making unit yesterday in connection with an investigation into alleged technology theft,” Jungah Lee reports for Bloomberg. “Samsung Display Co., which dominates the market for organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, panels, said investigators at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency went to its headquarters in Asan, south of the capital, and searched for documents related to the technology.”
“Police are investigating whether partners of rival panel maker LG Display Co. (034220) leaked technology secrets and whether Samsung (005930) is involved, Nathan Kim, a spokesman for Samsung, said by phone today,” Lee reports. “The two companies have been involved in criminal probes of alleged technology theft since last year. In July, six employees of LG Display were charged over theft of OLED technology from Samsung.”
Lee reports, “‘We have no reason to steal other companies’ technology, as we have the world’s best OLED technology,’ Jun Eun Sun, a spokeswoman for Samsung, said by phone today in Asan.”

Lee reports, “LG Display said it didn’t report Samsung to police in connection with the current investigation. ‘The latest investigation is related to large-sized OLED TV panel technology, but the police have made the allegation themselves,’ Son Young Jun, a Seoul-based LG Display spokesman, said by phone today.”

The big news is that the Koreans are beginning to understand what Intelectual Property is, and that it can be stolen, and the police can actually investigate it. That cultural change could be the silver lining in the Apple/Samsung IP battles. Nice to see 2 Korean companies battling it out over stolen IP. Hopefully the the idea and legitimacy of IP will spread through the cultures of the region.
This is actually two Korean companies, at each other’s throat. Sony may also claim Samsung theft, but may want to be left out of any documents.
I suggest the police are for Koreans, but when you have two competitors, from the same homeland, things are bound to happen.

I know Sony is Japan, it doesn’t mean they can’t file a complaint. They were the first to feel the eye and theft of Samsung. I think they have a legitimate axe to grind. They may even complain by proxy. I just tossed it in there anyway.
