Apple’s big secret: The iOS MacBook?

“Some think Apple’s next big move will be an iWatch device, while others predict it will be a fully integrated Siri AppleTV,” E. Werner Reschke writes for T-GAAP. “However, Apple’s next growth segment will be launching the iOS Laptop.”

“Once again, Apple will make the obvious spectacular,” Reschke writes. “The iOS laptop will run a clickable version of iOS so that you don’t touch the screen but use a mouse or trackpad. It won’t be a hybrid computer like Surface, where the operating system behaves one way with a keyboard and another without. The iOS laptop will use the same form factor as the 11″ MacBook Air, but instead of running OS X, it will run iOS.”

Reschke writes, “It will start at $799 USD and come with 256GB of SSI storage and 2GB of RAM. The key to the iOS laptop is it will not run on an Intel processor but on a quad-core ARM A-series Apple designed processor. This will mean superior battery life as well as more margin for Apple (as they won’t have to pay the “Intel tax” that other hardware vendors must). Everything loved about the iPad will now be available in a laptop format — which for many, will be significantly more practical.”

  1. I’ve written on this several times. It is a very good idea. Don’t think of it as an IOS MacBook, Think of it as an ARM architecture MacBook. The tools to build the apps are already there, Xcode 🙂 Bye-Bye Intel. AMD has a massive multicore ARM architecture in a tower format ready to go. Megahertz don’t matter so much in the post-pc world, also multicore arm boards and processors are very good and getting better.

  2. The idea behind the product is broken. It’s not good for serious content creating which will need better hardware and bigger screen, yet it’s too expansive for a lite content consuming device. This is exactly what Steve Jobs used to say about netbook:
Quote: “Netbooks aren’t better than anything,” “They’re just cheap laptops.”
The rumored device is exactly the same, they aren’t better than anything, just cheap.
Besides, laptop and touch(on-screen) just doesn’t go well with each other.

  3. The thought of being able to run iOS apps from OSX without the simulator XCODE provides, not to mention purchasing them also, may be something wildly popular. Such an emulator could be ported being extremely profitable for both developers and Apple. I doubt this would ever happen, but it could have positive implications for MacAir owners that want iPad apps.

  4. Iintel has a FASTER chip? How can you run final cut x on an Arm?
You can’t.If you have an OSX macbook you will need something that goes at about 3 ghz! This is something poeple NEED to think about. When the Haswell chip comes out ALL the “PCs’ will move to tablets. They KNOW Pc sales are dropping. But Apple “owns” the tablet market…..but with a WEAKER chip than intel.
How can you run final cut x on an Arm. Apple NEEDS to really think about this. The new Wintel/tablets will ALL have a better, faster chip, and doen’t think they won’t use that in their ads.

  5. This could work if one thing were added to iOS – a proper filing system, or at least don’t prevent me from filing the files in Dropbox (which can sync to my OSX filing system). If not, then this is a joke, in every sense of the word.

  6. I think it could be a huge hit if done right.
If Apple release this product it should run OSX and also have an option to flip between the full OS and iOS. Then you could run all your apps from you iPhone or iPad. Its pretty obvious thats where we’re headed – Launchpad in OSX indicates a heavy lean towards iOS integration. They will do away with the physical keyboard, and it will resemble two very thin iPads – with one or both screens touch capable. Thats what I envisage in the next couple of years.

  7. Yup, I can see all the hardcore geeks hating this idea, but it could happen and it would sell by the gazillion.

Two iPads with a hinge connecting them. Whichever is on the bottom becomes the keyboard. 14 hours battery life.

Of course, for this to work, iCloud syncing would have to be more than a sick joke. There are address book entries on my phone that have been refusing to sync to the Pad for months now.

  8. Mary Kate Danaher: Could you use a little water in your whiskey?
Michaleen Flynn: When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey; and when I drink water, I drink water.

  9. Why? Why? Why? The point of iOS is to alleviate the need for a keyboard ALL the time by making it a TOUCHABLE interaction. Why would they not only add the requirement for a mouse/trackpad, but force you to use it like a laptop instead of one-handed? This not only gets rid of the legendary iPhone/iPad ultra-portability, but likely decreases battery life. All of this to get an experience no better than the iPad. Wouldn’t it be easier to just add mouse/trackpad functionality to the iPad?

  10. Would be much better to replace Mac OS Dashboard with an iOS emulator that allows iOS apps to be downloaded from the iOS app store and run on the Mac alongside regular Mac apps. That way Mac users get the best of both worlds.
