  Plus, SGS4 is thicker and heavier. And iPhone 5 has about 50% faster graphics. SGS4 has either poorer frame rates or vastly simpler 3D graphic models to provide the same frame rate as iPhone 5 does.

  Actually, it’s a “marketing budget”, and advertising is just one part of that. The lion’s share goes to paying off resellers with spiffs to incentivize them to sell a Galaxy phone instead of an iPhone. Unfortunate that it works that way.

All true but the typical mobile phone buyer simply DOES NOT CARE. This is what Tim Cook doesn’t understand. The pop culture gadget market has no loyalty to any brand. They just want the glitz, glitter, bigger screen, fancy, useless apps, stupid games and such. If Apple had not committed all their resources to this departure from the serious business of serious computers, we wouldn’t be looking at a collapsed AAPL price and wondering what the future was for this once great company.

Tim Cook, and Apple, are simply interested in producing the best products and letting those discerning customers who are interested in the best they can buy, buy them. One would think that you would have grasped this basic concept by now. No one here wants Apple to cater to the “pop culture gadget market”, whatever that is. Get over yourself.

      Actually, WONDERFULLY, thank you peepee! Been an AAPL shareholder for 25 years now and have reaped over 2.7 million PROFIT therefrom (average purchase price 12.41 w/two splits). Wanna do the % math on that one, pee?
      
      My secret? Buy, hold, and–occasionally–take advantage of analysts/cowards/trolls like you in a half-dozen volatile day-trades over the years. It’s a kind of sweet/sour thing to sell during a downward trend (like the past six months), and then rebuy like hell 20 or 30 points south of that figure. Made me a small fortune.

  I think Apple has the arguably the most loyal brand following in the history of the world. You see the influence everywhere and you see entire social cultures and business flourish with this influence. This is what Apple does as a company as opposed to the bastardized products from Samsung that do nothing.

    well, that was made under Steve Jobs era. time has been changed, son. Tim Cook won’t achieve the same level and nobody can expect at all. honestly, Tim Cook slowly screws up the company. for example, he fired long loyalty people last year. since last year apple slowly shows the limitation on creation of market, and no innovation. of course, apple will grow some degree until next few more years. but they will fall in the end. by the way, iWatch? seriously? it is one of few examples apple throws itself to perish.

  I think Apple’s customer base covers a vast range of age categories, so you can’t just dismiss it that way. I don’t fall into the category of not caring what type of product I buy. I think you’re overlooking the average mom and pop consumer who do look for quality and have product loyalty.
  
  Apple has basically led the current smartphone era and they’ve tried to hold true to the values they would have invested in computers. One would be safe to say that being the wealthiest tech company on earth, Apple is probably still considered a great company. Maybe not as great as it could be, but I think there’s still room for growth. At least that’s my hope. There’s lots of low-hanging fruit out there for Apple to take over and maybe the company just doesn’t have enough skilled manpower yet to make it’s move. My faith is somewhat shaken, but I still want to believe it’s possible. With $140 billion almost anything is possible.
  
  Apple’s share price collapsed because hedge funds have no loyalty to any one company no matter how good it is. Right now, they’re too busy pumping up Netflix, Priceline and Google but hopefully, they’ll get tired of those companies and move elsewhere. Apple’s got the real money and not from just some over-inflated P/E.
  
  If Apple started a streaming movie/TV show service, Apple would have more subscribers in a month than all of Netflix, Amazon and Hulu combined. And I’d be one of them.

    The problem is that what you say makes no sense at all. Apple, by any measure, is one of the ten most profitable companies in the world. Beyond that, it has no debt, a mountain of cash, and 500 million credit card customers with extreme loyalty. How does that translate to “dead in the water”?

    How many shares do you actually own of AAPL? Really own – now wish you own?
    
    I have over 10,000 shares. Bought before there was a threat of a dividend or AAPL was any where as cash rich as they are today. It is my retirement programme and the shares would have to drop to under $20 for me to sweat. So, if you have put your money where your trash mouth is then keep on down playing AAPL.

      Here you go, Mr. Oz: the next big thing is for the company to get serious about the serious computing business. There are billions and billions – more than Apple has ever seen – out there in the corporate and government markets just waiting for the further advance in serious computers. If Apple would launch and aggressively pursue the potential power of the Mac Pro for these markets, then we would see some amazing things.
      
      Instead, however, in the most profound blunder of his genius, Steve Jobs gave up the challenge of overtaking Microsoft and converted Apple to a “mobile device” company and reaped the riches of making really cool gadgets.
      
      That’s all over now. Everyone is producing really cool gadgets. In the meantime, the serious computer market is going untapped. It’s low hanging fruit but the hapless, clueless Tim Cook can’t see it. So the once great company sits dead in the water and that’s a crying shame.

Looks like Samsung has finally arrived. I used to see people comparing their phone to the iPhone. It was the gold standard. Now I am starting to see headlines like this with others comparing their phone to the Galaxy S3. Right, wrong, or otherwise, this speaks volumes about how far Samsung has come in the last 3 years.

What staggers me is that the article, and even … yes, wait for it … MDN’s comment, all agree that it is only in things external to the iPhone 5 itself where Apple wins. No mention of the hardware features of the phone itself. Me, speaking as an Apple fan, I was drooling when I read the specs of the Samsung 4, and realising that the innovation wreath has, for the time being, swung to Samsung. Apple has had it too easy. For decades, in the PC and Phone arena, its competitors have been dog-pathetic at design and innovation. But it’s great that Apple has a real fight on its hands.

There are better features for Android too but it’s down to people’s priorities. For me I like the fact I can customise even a little and also not be tethered to iTunes to transfer any videos or audio. I also like the bigger screen and removable battery (I have a spare for long days out of the office). Plus Apps don’t live in their own bubble so they can interact.

I still love my iPhone 3Gs but I have a Galaxy 3 as my main phone.

  yep. i think if i went back to using an iphone the differences would be even more glaringly apparent then they are even now. I KNOW there’s stuff I would miss from Android. Apple’s app bubble and the itunes phantom teather would be a deal-breaker.

There is no doubt that android has made significant headway, but not everyone wants a large screen device. I will always prefer a thinner sleeker device, because I am a guy, and keep this thing in my front pocket all the time. The size of the iphone5 is perfect, and the screen is absolutely fine for what I, and 98% of what smartphone owners do with their phones 98% of the time…….text, email, select apps and actually make phone calls. Oh, perfectly syncs and integrates with all my devices and the devices of my family members. Perfect!!!
