Piper Jaffray’s Munster: Samsung innovating faster than Apple

Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray Cos., talks about Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy S IV smartphone, which is expected to be unveiled on March 14.

Munster discusses the outlook for sales versus Apple Inc.’s iPhone He speaks with Cory Johnson on Bloomberg Television’s “Bloomberg West.”

What [Samsung] are going is they’re innovating faster. I don’t know if they’re necessarily ahead of where Apple is, but just the pace that they’re coming out with [products] is so much faster, so think of it this way: iPhone comes out on an annual basis, Samsung comes outs with an impactful phone on a monthly basis and two or three really big phones a year. And so, the technology, I guess, that they’re actually working on, they;re able to get it to market a little bit faster… Samsung creates a lot of the components that Apple uses, so there’s a cost advantage that Samsung has in terms of the speed that they can get some of these phones out over Apple.

[Google] created this monster now with Samsung. People talk about about the Galaxy brand… they say it’s an Android phone coming out. That’s a shift versus a year ago and so we believe that there’s probably going ot be increased tension between Samsung and Google. – Gene Munster, Piper Jaffray

MacDailyNews Take: Pouring cheap plastic into molds, popping out the lumps, installing someone else’s OS layered with a patent infringing UI, and quickly dumping the results onto store shelves does not equal innovation.

    1. True, But wait…… notice how he sounds like Ballmer in what he says and how he says it. ????????

      Weird.

PS, more talk about market share. Who cares how many you make if you can only sell 1/2 of them. That kills your profit.

Ever notice how many discount tablets are on sale today… And none of them are Apple. Just a thought.

    2. Exactly what has Samsung done?

Eye tracking to scroll? What a stupid F—- idea.
I need my eyes to read the words. If the processor is going to constantly track where my eyes are… its a waste of cycles.

Samsung does not MAKE its own OS.
Samsung has failed at its store – a copied idea from Apple.
      Samsung copied Siri.
Samsung stole the pen from Bill Gates.
Samsung chose an inferior screen and large format.
Samsung did not innovate on battery life going bigger device.

Please help me understand where Samsung is innovating?

Eye Tracking… please – we shall see how much this is a STUPID gimmick in the next few days.

    3. Samsung has one phone that is priced at the same as Apples top iPhone 5.

The other sh_t Samsung puts out is dead end crap.
Samsung uses stolen AndyBotOS… open source that needs heavy reviewing.

Why people buy a 699.99 Android Slamdung phone makes me wonder. Size, SD slot are about all it has over iPhone.

BTW – iPad mini is destroying the sales of all slamdung products – as many already have iPhone.

    4. MDN – perfectly said.

“Pouring cheap plastic into molds, popping out the lumps, installing someone else’s OS layered with a patent infringing UI, and quickly dumping the results onto store shelves does not equal innovation.”

    5. In today’s dummied down, biznizz bozoid, techTard world, the term ‘innovation’ is equated with ‘stuff for sale’. Or at least that is what Gene Muster is, once again, attempting to say.

For the laziness impaired, here is one ACTUAL definition of INNOVATION:

      From WordNet (r) 3.0 (2006):

      innovation
n 1: a creation (a new device or process) resulting from study and experimentation [syn: invention, innovation]
2: the creation of something in the mind [syn: invention, innovation, excogitation, conception, design]
3: the act of starting something for the first time; introducing something new; “she looked forward to her initiation as an adult”; “the foundation of a new scientific society” [syn: initiation, founding, foundation, institution, origination, creation, innovation, introduction, instauration]

Simply rehashing a bunch of old and other-people’s ideas does NOT qualify. ShameScum is not entirely bereft of actual inventiveness. However, to use a metaphor, Apple is the oasis. ScamStung is the desert. Some life survives in the desert, but not much.

And yes, there’s a lot more desert than oasis. There usually is. I’ll stick with the oasis, thank you. You go play in the desert, sucker sheeple.

  1. Give me a break. What are they innovating exactly besides the ability to throw metric tons of sh*t against the wall to see what sticks? Is an 8″ monstrosity of a phone considered innovation? Producing 50,000 slightly different models of something doesn’t equal innovation Gene and you should know better.

    1. Perfect.
Just because they can slap crap together really fast means they are “innovating faster”?

What journalism school did Munster go to? They need to recall that diploma.

  2. I have a feeling that this idiot doesn’t actually know the definition of “innovation”.

” Samsung comes outs with an impactful phone on a monthly basis and two or three really big phones a year.”

Releasing a “new” phone monthly, that is really just the same crap with different screen sizes is not “innovation”.

So if Apple released a new iPhone multiple times a year, that was just like the previous iPhone, but in a different color, or with a hastily implemented new screen size, they would then be innovating? Give me a break.

I can’t believe these guys get paid for this crap.

    1. Well put. But please, PLEASE don’t tell me that any of this surprises you.

When the iPhone 4s came out, (soon to happen again with the 5s) Apple changed/upgraded every major system. Yet the press and usual band of idiots said “It looks the very same, so nothing is different”

Following this ‘logic’, any phone maker could release a ‘new’ phone weekly for two years, and have each and every weekly ‘update’ heralded as new, innovative, and iPhone killer all because it looked just a little different on the outside.

        1. If you’re a techTard analcyst or journalcyst, the term ‘cpu’ flies over your head and you don’t notice anything so trivial. Does it have more flashy lights and faster Twitter? That’s the crucial stuff. 😉

  3. “Samsung comes outs with an impactful phone on a monthly basis and two or three really big phones a year.”

Really!??! I can only think of the Galaxy series and the Note. What else is there?

    One more ANALyst to ignore.

    1. i think this whole mantra here that everything samsung does or creates is stealing from apple or half assed really needs to stop. its immature. i love the iphone but i find myself impressed by many features these new galaxy phones carry and i know every single one of you has to. if you say no you would be lieing to yourself. anyway the point is the iphone is awesome but have an open mind and pull the stick out of your arses.

      1. also i know ill get the troll accusations after posting this but by doing that youll only prove my case. also i realize there are probably grammer or spelling errors but deal with it

      2. what features would you be impressed with? sharing a playlist with someone that has a GSIII? have fun finding someone to press your 2 phones together.

my boss who was mostly anti-APPL before I started working for him had a GSIII for a month and needed to get 2 extra batteries, cause they wouldn’t charge in the phone, the phone would hear up like a frying pan, and would get about 2 hours while on LTE, and less than that using wifi. he didn’t have enough sense to get an IP5, and got another GSIII. I lolled for hours, knowing what was coming about a month later. not only did he break the screen while in a case, but the battery and charging issues were back after a lil over a month. he excuse was that he get to the wifi selector quickly. I guess you would have to, if wifi killed your phone in under 2 hours.

and guess what he has now… an IP5. Samsung can keep their half-baked tech, with their half-baked OS. I guess those large screens aren’t optimized for android or battery life. sorry but an iPhone is more than a phone, it’s my central hub for business. I need it to run when I need it, like it does 24/7/365. I don’t have time for half-assed attempts, that costs me money and my time which is even more valuable.

Samsung can steal innovation all they want, but they are still not accomplished at doing one thing better than the iPhone. a big screen, who cares the ip5 is hard enough to get out of my pocket when a call is coming in. replaceable battery? like I want to carry around more accessories, and who wants a plasticky cheap looking phone with an oversized screen? looks like a fisher price phone.

    2. I agree- I am a dye-hard Apple fan (2 iPhone and a total of 11 Apple products in my house). I LOVE iOS and the Mac. BUT, a friend bought a Galaxy S3 and I was impressed. Besides its large screen, you can zoom the video- can’t do that on my iPhone’s native app.

I think the GUI is atrocious (very unaesthetic), but that’s the whole point: you can configure it as you like. I WISH I could change the color of the badges from red to blue (used to be able to when I jailbroke my phone 3 years ago, but can’t be bothered to jailbreak anymore- just too much work).

Why can’t I set the WiFi, brightness, Personal Hotspot and other such settings directly from the Notification Manager? Such a no-brainer- but Apple doesn’t do.

Apple IS losing their edge. Let’s just hope that iOS 7 brings back true innovation and convenience…

    1. So, if Apple revised their iPhone and other devices every 3 or 4 months, Apple would out innovate Samsung. Really? If they were painted another color or better camera lens than that counts as “innovation” now? Don’t drink the Kool-Aid man. A revision or up grade is not “innovation”!

  4. You would think most columnist could relate to Samsung or maybe it is intentional not to. How many of these ” columnist” actually do the required work to be factual on the subjects they write about? By nature, they write how a company produces cheap phones with little finish, reliability or quality- just as a start. Yet, they praise them as innovators. Now, how many of these so called experts take the time to do the hard work and define the true difference in products to inform the reader and not the easy way of reading blogs, articles, made by others, then combine that with there own healthy dose of options, then type out a truly in accurate article for another of the same cloth to further distort. Would this be a better columnist, journalist, or reporter-by nature of production? To say an article that takes more time to do correctly is less than one produced in haste with little attention to detail?

Sad they have such low standards and lack of knowledge of what they write about.

  5. All lot of the so-called innovation for Samsung is sitting back and waiting for Google to upgrade Android. With Android, Samsung would be dead. Without Apple’s cash form the component side of things would have been different. They lucked out all around, now they have momentum and they are doing a great job milking it.

  6. When analysts equate the word “innovate” with “product release”, you have a real problem.

Releasing the same phone in a different color case, or different screen size, or adding 20 year old stylus technology, isn’t innovating. A bigger screen isn’t an innovation, it’s just bigger glass.

Have Samsung actually CREATE something, and then we’ll talk about innovation.

  7. The obvious joy from the ‘bottom dwellers’ and ‘cheapskates’ is always short lived and to be expected as they sift through yet another plethora of ‘knockoff’ incarnations from a company that specialises in masquerading as an innovator but is known to be nothing more than a ‘common thief’ and third rate replicator of mediocrity.

  8. I beleive they’ve confused ‘iteration’ with ‘innovation.’ Considering the state of education and the media in this country we understand it’s an easy mistake for them to make.

    1. Biggus Dickus, er, I mean Raymond said
“My dick is longer than you”

Your dick is longer than 6 feet? Sorry, that doesn’t sound more capable, more like incapacitating. Just sayin’

  9. That’s not “innovating.” TRUE Innovation is creating and releasing the Mac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and iPad in the first place, to be copied in endless iterations by the fakers.

Samsung fears doing anything truly innovative, because that’s risky. REAL innovation requires courage. Let’s say Samsung and Apple are both working on some type of “wristwatch” device. Maybe Samsung already has something being prototyped right now, but they probably won’t release it. Why? Because they need to see Apple’s product first. If Samsung went first, Apple will invariably release a far better-designed (and instantly more popular) product later. Samsung will be “compelled” to copy it, and Apple can do the “before and after iWatch” song and dance, like they did with iPhone.

  10. Using Munster’s logic, both GM and Ford out innovate Apple as they release a host of innovative products each year. A 2013 Impala is WAY different from the 2012 – now that’s innovation!

  11. Everything everyone is saying here is true, but the problem I have seen happen is a perception distortion. One of the many great things about Steve Jobs was he had the ability to pick up a rock on the street and convince you and get you excited about why you needed & wanted to buy that rock or for that matter a Apple product. I don’t see anyone right now within Apple convincing me or trying to get me excited about buying their products. It’s not that are not still making great products, as I’m still buying them, but there seems to be this constant negative vibe about Apple and I think Apple needs a fresh face out there convincing the public why their so great and why we should keep buying into there eco system and Tim Cook is not that guy. I’m sure he is great at what he’s always done for Apple but Apple needs a new public image figure.

  12. I see hell is finally freezing over and pigs are starting to fly. Apple’s one-time, favorite cheerleader loves big-display, plastic smartphones. I’d sure love to see what type of cars these people drive and what their homes are like to be so fascinated with low-quality products. Since when did branded products fall out of favor around the world.

  13. GM is trying to compare Apples with Oranges.
Apple hides development and production untill they have several million of the new phones and the customer expectation is that every new feature will work seamlessly and as advertised.
Samsung throw out phone upgrades by production batch and features that do or don’t work are an ‘Android’ issues – ie. deniable liability – and that’s a defence Apple don’t have.
I personally will opt for fewer well integrated outputs that are not dependent upon ‘ice cream’ or ‘Jelly beans’ flavours
