“In 2008, Microsoft’s Windows OS ran on 95% of all computing devices. By the end of 2012, Forrester estimated that Microsoft’s market share had declined to 30%,” John Kirk writes for TechPinions. “There are already more Android users than Windows users and by the end of 2013, it is probable that there will be more iOS users than Windows users too. If so, by the end of this year, Windows will be only the third most popular computer OS in the world.”
“The iPhone, alone, makes more profit than all of Microsoft and by the end of 2013 it is expected that the iPad, alone, will make more revenue than all of Microsoft too,” Kirk writes.
“Microsoft is not in any danger. But their personal computing empire is,” Kirk writes. “Microsoft is making more and more of their money from their server and tools division, which is a good thing. But their income from Windows and Office is still huge and it seems that both are tied to the declining PC sector. And as Microsoft loses its monopoly position, its dominance over even the declining PC sector is waning too.”
Kirk writes, “Microsoft will continue to make money on the sales of Windows 8 licenses but the goal of Windows 8 was to transfer Microsoft’s user base from desktops and notebooks to tablets and phones. That bid has, so far, failed.”

The day will come, and it will be very soon, when the tipping point for Microsoft’s Windows OS arrives. Windows 8 has been a disaster so far. From the way the tablet market is evolving it surely looks like the rump of computer users (many who are still stuck on/ using Win XP) may actually be forced to look at MS offerings and respond with a resounding NO. Windows Nein may be that moment. Windows? Nein!
I still use XP for my Parallels virtual machine.
I’m pretty sure if you include OS X with iOS they shit on Android’s numbers. How do they leave that out? There’s no way iOS’s+OS X’s combined numbers are less than Android’s numbers on smartphones and tablets.
Laptops and desktops may be falling out of favor, but I’m pretty sure there’s a large amount of users for both, which MUST be combined with all iOS numbers to be accurate in the above comparisons.
Gah…I’m too hungover. Ignore my above rant if the article was only counting mobile devices.
Leave the consumer market to Apple, and leave the corporate world to Microslut. Any attempt by Microslut to enter the consumer (read tablet) market is a dismal attempt certainly followed by failure. On the other hand, “heckuva job Ballsmer, keep it up”

I use Linux Ubuntu at work and it completely eclipses Windows.
Look, Apple has the luxury end. “it just works”. Gorgeous UI. Integration with iDevices.
Ubuntu has the nerd/hacker, open, no-frills thing covered. And some.
That leaves Windows with the no-clue no-class market.
Good. Fifteen years ago Windows had the no-clue no-choice market. Progress!

Increasingly, Steve Ballmer brooks no dissent from his managers, as he continues his descent into madness. Already resembling a cruel caricature of Pantagruel, and beginning to appear as a prominent case study in the psychiatric literature of high functioning delusional disorder, his shuffling of the chain of command has raised serious concerns on the part of unnamed board members as to his strategic vision, or just plain vision, particularly as some insiders have reported him imitating the mannerisms of Lex Luthor.
From my tinkering with Windows 8, I can see a few tweaks and paradigm shifts that could turn it into something more streamlined and useable, however, I don’t see Microsoft doing that. Pity, because just a few tweaks could get rid of the most common taunts and criticisms. That way, even if Win 9 weren’t as good as OSX, it’d be close enough for Microsoft to maintain its dominance over Apple. Apple, without competition, is a domineering tyrant that can’t care a stuff about customers unless money rolls in. So Apple needs competition. I don’t care about Microsoft, except as a competitive safeguard against Apple’s latest Microsoft-ish tendencies.
Completely agree. Many would argue that Apple, having crawled all the way back from oblivion, Houdini-like, then rising to dominance, became complacent—no more need to stay hungry. That could be true. But I think Google is more like Hitler and Microsoft is more like Mussolini. Google is Tojo.

The Windows 8 interface disaster is delightful to watch. There’s just something special about a slow motion train wreck.
That being said, this is no time for Apple to be complacent. If anything, this is the opening that Apple needs to claw back market share (and profits) for the Mac OS. Yes, you know, that other OS that Apple used to develop and write cutting edge software for….
Also, let’s keep things in perspective. According to analytics firm Net Applications, the operating (not sales) market share for desktops based on web site tracking data is:

Cook has some work to do if he wants to have a healthy Mac App store in the future. a 6.5% web presence — just a hair above that pathetic excuse for an OS called Vista — DOES NOT CUT IT.
… and yes, i know Apple makes more money in total selling iOS gadgets. Apple makes a greater margin on Macs, and would earn a lot more volume if the company actually put an effort toward the Mac. Under Cook, his focus has been predominantly on iOS — which is also not a leader in market share.

I think microsoft’s idea is to get more business, NOT coming up with new creative ideas. The idea to move people from Wdoz8 to other devices – is an idea just make money, thats all.
