“Apple users are reporting a problem which means they’re unable to reinstall Mac OS X Mountain Lion on new Apple Mac computers, it is believed the problem lies in the computers missing essential permission files,” Thomas Tamblyn reports for T3.
“The issue arises when users try to reinstall the OS from the Mac App Store resulting in an error message which says the computer isn’t compatible with OS X Mountain Lion,” Tamblyn reports. “This is apparently happening because the computers aren’t shipping with the latest permissions needed to install the OS from the App Store, at present it appears as though there is no known fix.”

“The issue doesn’t stop at preventing you from downloading or using the downloaded OS X Mountain Lion installer, however – it also prevents you from re-installing Mountain Lion using the Recovery partition,” J. Glenn Künzler reports for MacTrast. “I was able to work around that specific issue by repairing the boot volume permissions immediately before attempting to reinstall, however.”
“The issue also prevents users from restoring from a Time Machine backup using the Recovery partition. Any attempt to do so results in a message stating ‘An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk,'” Künzler reports. “The message directs users to restart their Macs and try again – but unfortunately, restarting does not make a difference in the slightest. Instead of using the Recovery partition to restore from a Time Machine backup, users must use the Migration Assistant app from within a complete OS X Mountain Lion install.”

I have ore than 10 Macs between home and work. I’ve never had one crash in five years so I wouldn’t know about this.
I refuse to use the restore from the hidden partition (option key on boot) because it says it want to download form the Applestore but does not tell you waht it is downloading. Where as if you use Liondiskmaker and create a USB memory stick installer it does not have to download anything from the store thus will not suffer from this Deliberate Apple introducted Bug.

Somewhat OT but I need help:
Running OS 10.6.8 on 2 year old iMac and considering upping to OS 10.7, but can’t seem to find it on the Apple Downloads.
Found many upgrades to 10.7, but not 10.7 itself.
Anyone know where to go?
I just did a search on ebay for “mac osx lion” and specified software only. There were a number of items described as getting Snow Leo ready for a Lion install. Also saw some “official” thumb drives that contain Lion for sale http://tinyurl.com/btqs4st . These drives look like your best bet.

The upgrade is the 10.7 download. You will get an installer package when you download it that you can turn into a bootable disc, flash drive, disc image, etc. if you want. Just install 10.7.

I found lots of 10.7 things to download…. They were updates to 10.7, like Update 10.7.3.
If I DL that, will that also give me basic 10.7 OS?

Yes. You will download the latest 10.7 update, which should be 10.7.5. There is no way to download 10.7.0, which makes sense – why would you want to? My other comments were about how to make a backup of the 10.7 “installer” as there is no install disc anymore, which freaks out some people. You don’t have to make an install disc/flash drive/disc image – some people just choose too. You will always be able to reinstall 10.7 from either Apple’s site or the “recovery partition” that it creates if something goes bad in the future. The other comforting thing is that you don’t need to make these decisions now. You can make an install disc later if you want. The installer package doesn’t delete itself – it will sit on your computer forever. It’s kinda hidden, but it’s there. If you do want to make an install disc, I suggest you research a little bit on the web. Any of the first hits you get on a Google search will be for a reputable Mac site with clear directions.

Huh. I bought a Mini in late November, sent it to OWC and had a 240GB SSD piggy-backed on the native 500GB HSS. I was able to do a new install on the SSD over the net. No issues here.
