Apple iOS dominates mobile video viewing with 60% share vs. Android’s 32%

“A new study from video monetization company FreeWheel today reveals that the mobile video market grew from 2 percent in 2011, to 12 percent of overall online videos watched in 2012,” Darrell Etherington reports for TechCrunch.

“That’s a huge increase, and the main benefactor of that jump is Apple, whose iOS mobile OS grew its share of total mobile video views to 60 percent, compared to Android’s 32 percent take of all mobile views,” Etherington reports. “Apple’s strong lead is dues to its dominance in the tablet market, where FreeWheel says Android has yet to field a competitor that can truly make a dent in its overall share.”

Etherington reports, “The iPad accounted for 24 percent of the overall iOS total, with the iPhone taking 30 percent and iPod touch devices accounting for the remaining 6 percent of its overall share. FreeWheel didn’t break out Android smartphone vs. tablet traffic, and instead just noted that tablet traffic was minimal.”

  1. Hmmm. Does that really compute? 24% of iOS overall total share of video was via iPad, iPhone 30%, and iPod touch devices taking the remaining 6%. Doesn’t that add up to 60%? How does 60% represent a total? I don’t get it. Must prove that you have to be smarter than I am to generate these kinds of reports.

    1. @rdiddly,
It’s just badly worded. What they meant is that how iOS’s 60% of the entire mobile video is divided up. I.e., iPhone has 30% of the entire mobile video market, iPad has 24% of the total market, and iPod has 6% of the total market.

  2. @MDN: “Apple TV is an iOS device, too”

Not in Apple’s statistics; when they announce figures, Apple TV is not counted. There is iOS-based OS, not real iOS device. This may change in the future, but for now it is so.
