Apple prepping ‘iPhone Plus’ with 5-inch display?

“The recently rumored, larger-screened ‘iPhone Math,’ or more likely ‘iPhone Plus,’ is plausible as an additional model (not a replacement) alongside the 4” iPhone,” Marco Arment blogs. “And there’s a good chance that it would have a 4.94”, 16:9 screen.”

“The theory is easy to understand: perform John Gruber’s Mini-predicting math backwards. The iPad Mini uses iPhone 3GS-density screens at iPad resolution. What if an iPhone Plus used Retina iPad screens with iPhone 5 resolution, keeping the rest of the design sized like an iPhone 5?” Arment writes. “By keeping the pixel dimensions the same as the iPhone 5, no app changes would be necessary.”

Arment writes, “Its 640 × 1136, 264 DPI screen would measure 4.94” diagonally, and it would look roughly like this next to an iPhone 5:”

  1. What everyone is missing is that the image of the supposed 5″ iPhone screen is 100% WRONG.

If the pixel count is the same as the iPhone 5 but is now dispersed over the larger 5″ screen then the type would be larger! There would NOT — I emphasize **NOT** — be more words on the screen. Every pixel is physically larger then by the way iOS maps to the screen the text would be larger. There would not be more words on the screen. The text does NOT stay the same size.

This is a stupid concept from the outset.

What Apple needs to do — and something that Apple (and others) have promised since the mid 90s — is true screen resolution independence. The problem is that 99.9% of the readers of tech boards out there (and probably 80% of Apple’s engineers) have no idea what true screen resolution independence is..

However, once Apple figures this out — and implements it on everything from the iPods to the iPhones to the iPads to the Macs it won’t have to worry about screen resolution or pixel count or screen size ever again. Apple can put an abstraction layer in between the developer and the hardware. Developers say draw a 2.5678″ diameter circle and the hardware through iOS draws a 2.5678″ diameter circle on the screen (to within 1/2 pixel). Text will be such that 20 point type will be exactly 0.27674 inches (to within 1/2 a pixel) no matter what Apple device’s screen.

Apple needs to free itself from resolution and pixel counts and screen sizes! AND APPLE NEEDS TO PATENT EVERY VARIANT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF WHICH APPLE CAN THINK!!!!

  2. One thing that gets lost in the noise is that a larger screen with a corresponding ability to change the default fonts and icon sizes to display larger would be a good thing for people with BAD EYESIGHT. Wife would love to have one but a stroke left her eyesight limited and the larger screen on her Droid next to my 5 is a definite advantage to her for making calls and reading text (as much as I despise saying so).

  3. A big, expensive junk of plastic. An ever- expanding line of mobile devices. The “iPerforma?” This is exactly the type of thinking Jobs eliminated to save the company. The idea is to innovate, not compete.

    1. I don’t think you get it. People don’t want discrete, miniature aids for making calls. They want room-sized boom boxes. All the cool kids will have backpacks sewn to their shirts and the astronaut look will be in. Fashion is funny.

  4. Apple has 4 iPod sizes & have dominated the market. We need 4 iPhone sizes in different sizes, colors, & cost to DOMINATE the market. iPhone is the best cause of iOS & apps.
