Wintek starts trial production of One Glass Solution touchscreens for Apple’s next-gen 9.7-inch iPad, sources say

“Wintek has reportedly begun trial production on a thin-film type touch screen lamination line that is expected to go into mass production in the second half of 2013, according to industry sources,” Siu Han and Alex Wolfgram report for DigiTimes.

“The line will reportedly be used to produce thin-film type touch screen products for Apple’s next generation 9.7-inch iPad, which is expected to be released during the time period, said the sources,” Han and Wolfgram report. “Wintek’s one-glass-solution (OGS) touch screen shipments are expected to see limited growth in the first quarter of 2013, but are expected to grow the following quarter, said the sources.”

  1. What a nonsense; if Wintek is used, then there is nothing one glass about this.

iPhone 5 has two glasses: the cover glass (Gorilla 2) and the IPS TFT matrix with in-cell touch touch. All the rest of Apple’s products, for now, use three glasses.

If Wintek starts production of touch layer that is not in glass, but in film, then you still could not really call the end product “one glass”. It would be display screen glass and touch-sensitive layer/film — and, of course, the cover glass.

  2. I believe that Apple’s next big thing will be haptic. They have several patents on this. The flexibility of IGZO could help achieve haptic. There is a new patent about manufacturing a touch screen with Liquid Metal. Combined haptic is a real possibly. This would put Apple far ahead of the competition. I am not so sure about the need for Wintek OGS. The haptic may just start with iPhone because of the high price. The OGS could be for a new iPad until haptic is affordable.

    1. All haptic technologies worsen quality of image and prone to scratches, comparing to purely hardened glass (Gorilla 2/3) cover. So I am not sure that haptic is Apple’s thing.

Also, IGZO is the material from which TFT transistors are made of, it does not provide flexibility.

  3. I don’t care what display technology will apple use, I just care if apple will be able to ship the products on time.

I am still wating for the 27″ iMac (with the “Hi-Tech Display”) I ordered on 13 December 2012!

      1. everything seems to be ok, and they told me the imac is coming before the 25 of january. My brother ordered the same imac on 17 Dec through a certified apple reseller and still waiting!
