Apple announces iPad with Retina display featuring 128GB storage capacity, on sale February 5th

Apple today announced a 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad with Retina display. The 128GB iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models provide twice the storage capacity of the 64GB models to hold even more valuable content including photos, documents, projects, presentations, books, movies, TV shows, music and apps.

“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in the press release. “With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

iPad continues to have a significant impact on business with virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 currently deploying or testing iPad. Companies regularly utilizing large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad. The over 10 million iWork users, and customers who rely on other incredible apps like Global Apptitude for analyzing team film and creating digital playbooks, Auria for an incredible 48 track recording system, or AutoCAD for drafting architectural and engineering drawings, also benefit greatly from having the choice of an iPad with more storage capacity.

“Our AutoCAD WS app for iOS was designed to give customers seamless access to their designs anywhere, anytime,” said Amy Bunszel, vice president of AutoCAD products for Autodesk, in the press release. “These files are often large and highly detailed so having the thin and light iPad with its Multitouch display, integrated camera and all-day battery life, is a real advantage for iPad users to view, edit and share their AutoCAD data.”

“The features and capabilities of iPad give us the ability to set a new standard for multitrack recording and editing on a mobile device,” said Rim Buntinas, WaveMachine Labs’ CEO, in the press release. “Users of the Auria app can play 48 mono or stereo 24bit/96 kHz tracks simultaneously, record up to 24 of those tracks simultaneously, and also edit and mix with familiar tools. With its portability and all-day battery life, iPad has revolutionized recording for audio professionals allowing artists to record anywhere.”

“The bottom line for our customers is winning football games, and iPad running our GamePlan solution unquestionably helps players be as prepared as possible,” said Randall Fusee, Global Apptitude Co-Founder, in the press release. “The iPad’s unbeatable combination of security, being thin and light, having an incredible Retina display and also being powerful enough to handle large amounts of data enables us to deliver a product that takes film study to a new level and ultimately gives our users the best opportunity to prepare, execute and win.”

The fourth generation iPad features a gorgeous 9.7-inch Retina display, Apple-designed A6X chip, FaceTime HD camera, iOS 6.1 and ultrafast wireless performance. iOS 6.1 includes support for additional LTE networks around the world, and iTunes Match subscribers can download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud.

iPad runs over 800,000 apps available on the App Store, including more than 300,000 apps designed specifically for iPad, from a wide range of categories including books, games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. iPad also supports the more than 5,000 newspapers and magazines offered in Newsstand, and the more than 1.5 million books available on the iBookstore℠.

Pricing & Availability
The new 128GB versions of the fourth generation iPad will be available starting Tuesday, February 5, in black or white, for a suggested retail price of $799 (US) for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and $929 (US) for the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model. All versions of the 128GB iPad will be sold through the Apple Online Store, Apple retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

  1. Hopefully they drop the 16GB (because that’s a rediculous starting point) and they drop prices $100 across the board, so the 32 becomes the new 499/629, 64 is 599/729, and 128 is 699/829. And hopefully they do the same with iPhone next time around.

      1. Finally someone knows how to spell ‘ridiculous’, seperate is next. It’s sepArate folks! To ‘pare’ away. Thanks Mike.

Most of these maroons went to college. And don’t come back here with a load of snide remarks about spelling police – just learn from your mistakes.

        1. No, this is the place where you display what you supposedly learned in English class. The fact that it’s an internet site is not an excuse for poor use of the language.

        2. And don’t forget to use the apostrophe properly:

it’s = the contraction of the words it is, as in “it’s a sunny day”

its = the possessive personal pronoun, as in “let’s give Apple its due.

let’s = the contraction of let us, as in ” ‘lettuce stop right here,’ she said crisply.”

@Mike above – I didn’t take Steven’s comment as particularly winey, though it did have a touch of beer in it. 🙂

          Love ya all !

        3. Oops make that morons — not maroons (I.e.: without the apostrophe). See, we all make typing, grammar, spelling and punctuation errors folks, but there’s no excuse for lazy language — even in the age of text messaging.

  2. The 64GB iPad that I got 2 months ago is now being eclipsed by the 128GB model. Problem is I am not going to run out and get this model as I just upgraded, as much as I’d love to have 2x capacity.

I liked it better when the refresh/new product cycle was more defined. It’s getting hard to stay current on Apple technologies.

      1. Yup, the kids have 16gb minis and we used a Seagate wifi drive to load over 250gb of movies and shows for them to watch on a road trip. 16 might be a little low if you put a lot of pictures and apps on it, but 32 is probably a lot more reasonable. Depends on what you need/want to store, tho.

  3. Now I can finally use an iPad as a proper backup to my laptop while DJing. I usually run AIFF files off my laptop but I could get by with AAC Lossless on a 128GB iPad as backup. Hopefully the next iPhone will be 128GB as well.

  4. I’d love to see 128GB iPhone, but I’d think Apple would prefer to use this to counter the ASP drop due to iPad mini / rumored-iPhone-mini.

It’d be amazing if Apple could maintain $650 ASP for iPhone even if they offer a lower entry price point of $299/349.

    1. Apple could easily have 128 GB iPhone, but they shrunk inner space of iPhone 5 dramatically — comparing to iPhone 4/S — so they had to cut in half number of flash memory chips that phone’s main board can fit.

  5. It worries me that Apple is rushing to get “NEW” products to market, but all they are doing is updating the spec sheet.

Not a very Jobsian way to move forward, I just hope there will be more interesting things coming in the future.

  6. And now we all want 256 Gb and 500 Gb options since 128 Gb has arrived.

Again Apple is first to offer this increase.
Why has the competitors merely copied Apples foot steps? Why did they not offer 500 Gb long ago.

Because Apple knows it’s numbers and supply.
The other companies are scared little sheep.

    1. I think Apple pushed out this 128GB iPad option now because the Microsoft Surface Pro with 128GB was due to arrive at the end of January. I believe it since has been delayed by a couple of weeks. Because he next Blackberry 10 (this week) and Samsung S IV (by April) are coming soon, I think we’ll see an iPhone update before July. Apple has been trying to change up the product release schedule of late, to be more competitive.

  7. Does anyone know if the Lightning connector is capable of USB-3 speeds? Having so much space is great, but backing up and restoring begins to be a daylong chore at USB-2 speeds.
