Isn’t it clear by now that they are not the same thing? If you can get an iPhone 4 in the states for free with a 2 year contract, the carrier is paying Apple for the phone and gouging you for service fees to get the money back. If the same device were sold in a country where telcos offer no subsidy, the buyer would pay upwards of $250 for it. Hardly free.
