‘Sensus’ touch-sensitive iPhone case rewrites rules on smartphone functionality

“Remember that feeling of wonder you experienced when you used an iPhone — or any touch device — for the first time? That same magic feeling washed over me at CES when I stumbled across the Sensus, a revolutionary protective case that happens to add touch capabilities to the sides and back of your iPhone,” Jason Evangelho reports for Forbes.

“The Sensus is quite simple in its functionality, but its possibilities seem endless,” Evangelho reports. “When attached via the iPhone’s proprietary connection, it adds touch response — for up to 10 fingers — to the entire surface of the phone (with the exception of the bottom). It also acts as a protective case.”

Evangelho reports, “Imagine browsing a webpage and running your thumb along the side of your iPhone to scroll up and down. It feels more natural and doesn’t block the view… Minneapolis-based Canopy is planning to launch the Sensus for iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 this summer at about $69.”

  1. Didn’t Sony already do something like this on their latest handheld system? Ole Jason is probably one of those people that see their first Red motorcycle and say “Did you the color of that motorcycle? What a novel color! What do they call it? In other words, this guy should work for the U.S. Patent Office. Where people wouldn’t know a legitimate innovation if it hit them across the head.

  2. I’m so sick of nerds in the tech industry yelling and screaming about some gimmick that’s always supposed to “change the world” and reinvent everything.

I like what Steve Jobs said about Dropbox, paraphrasing: “Dropbox isn’t a business, it’s a feature”.

And then when it’s half baked… it’s even funnier to see how crazy people get over geeky shit. Bottom line is it takes a massive amount of R&D and input to create a product that people actually want to use and that makes sense. Something that isn’t a frivolous waste of time and money. Unfortunately in the tech industry there’s no shortage of cheap plastic junk and half baked stuff.

    1. That has always been Apple at it’s best. Taking the rest of the worlds clumsy, lame attempts at something that has a glimmer of greatness, grinding them up and turning them into something awesome that is like a dream invention from another world.

      1. @MacRaven “…grinding them up…”
So, at Apple it is relevant to ask “does it blend well?”. 😉

huh, Microsoft seems to fit your description, including spending a massive amount to create a product, vaporware, or FUD. No one actually uses or wants the product? Whoops, need to increase Marketing’s budget!

    1. I too remember Apple inc. filing for a patent for a touch sensitized rear case to operate the GUI including a filing for a variety of gestures to achieve this that were slightly different from the gestures filed for what we are now familiar with.
