“According to BrightWire, a business-to-business resource for portfolio managers, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd.’s subsidiary Shenzhen Century Science & Technology (SCST) may enter Apple’s supply chain with its panels that feature one glass solution (OGS) technology, which have been sent to Apple for testing on its iPad mini 2,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“The rumor states that the 7.85-inch iPad mini 2’s Retina display will adopt OGS technology, and new photomasks for the iPad mini 2 have been delivered, which indicates that the pilot product is set to begin,” Purcher reports.

Both of my nephews are hoping there’s a new Retina display in the iPad Mini. They saw mine at Christmas.
Why? It would need to be at least twice a thick to hold the battery necessary to support the massively increased CPU & GPU resources required to drive that kind of (huge) display (to maintain similar performance to what it has now.)
And for what? Do you really think the resolution of the mini is so lacking. I don’t.
“The retina mini coming soon” is just a nonsense rumor.

The pixel size is already very much reduced on the iPad mini. If it went to Retina standard, it would have to have a scaling factor of about 2/3 added to all the apps to make it usable. If the display was just bumped up to the same pixel count as the iPad, it would become ‘super retina’ and drive the cost over the top.

Having used them all, I’m convinced that the form factor of the mini is the way Apple wanted the iPad to be in the first place – but it just took time for the technology to catch up. If there is a way (and there will be a way) to get a retina-level display working on the mini without sacrificing size, weight and battery life, it would be the Perfect iPad. I like mine a lot, have ditched the 10″ one, but some websites do suffer from the pixelization. That would be my only comment.
Whatever the next Mini is, and I hope that Apple manage to get screen and battery technology together to have a Retina screen on it, I’ll be buying one.
I have both the ipad3 retina and the ipad mini and I have learned to adjust to both, it really not as hard as some people make it out to be. Get over it already.
