Analyst: Apple will need to address embarrassingly large smartphones

“Topeka Capital analyst Brian White told CNBC on Monday that data from the CES gave him even more reason to be bullish on the iPhone maker,” Aabha Rathee reports for Wall St. Cheat Sheet. White has a $1,111 price target on Apple, which happens to be more than 50 percent higher than Wall Street’s average of $740.

Really the two areas of growth are going to be tablets — 25 percent — and smartphones — 22 percent. – Brian White

Rathee reports, “This scenario, the analyst said, played right into the hands of Apple… ‘I think, you know, maybe it won’t be an iPhone mini right out of the bat, but I think a different form factor of iPhone we’ll see sometime in June … I think you’ll see a smaller, and a bigger; so you might see a premium iPhone, and a cheaper iPhone. One of the thing you’ll see at CES this week, are as what we call, the embarrassingly large smartphones … I’m seeing this trend in Asia and I think that’s something Apple has to address.'”

    1. Not nearly good enough. The iPhone needs to be #1 best-selling smartphone in the “world”. Wall Street has well indicated that “the U.S. is not enough”. Samsung has the whole world in its pocket and is quickly turning Apple into a second-rate company or at least that’s what the news media is saying.

      1. Lb48,
So you are actually listening to what the idiot media are saying? Do you think Apple is doomed too?

Just remember….market share is everything. Just ask Dell.

        Just a thought

      2. IPhone has even the best selling smartphone in the world until last October where it was (briefly) eclipsed by Samsung. However when Apple releases its quarterly results later this month, I’m certain iPhone will be 1 in the world again.

      1. 4:3 at 4.5in would not be phablet territory.

But let’s face facts here, a huge part of the reason that phablets suck is because they run Android. A couple iOS devices in phablet territory on the other hand, say iPhone XL and iPod touch XL, would be awesome. So maybe he does want a phablet, but one that runs iOS, one that would instantly change a whole lot of opinions around here the same way the iPad mini did for sub-10″ tablets. There’s nothing wrong with that.

        1. I never stated that the mini was 7″, so you can’t tell me much of anything.

The consensus around here pre-mini was that anything below 10 inches was insufficient for proper tablet usage. I can’t say if you specifically were apart of the anti-mini chorus, but the majority of voices were against the mini, even months after its final screen dimensions were revealed. Then it all changed once Apple released it.

If Apple were to make an iOS phablet, the story would be the same.

        2. That’s simply not true.

Most people were against the 7 incher’s and most thought the mini was going to be 7″. They were againts that. Most people were ok with an ipad mini in the form it eventually took! Which was 7.9″. Some didn’t realize what difference that .9″ made and continued to think of the two as the same.

Point is, if Apple had made a nexus like tiny screen 7″ device there would not have been a …”Then it all changed once Apple released it”….moment.

So there will not be a similar moment for an Apple phablet.

    1. The jack on the bottom makes perfect ergonomic sense. The cable doesn’t dangle across the screen when holding vertically, and when you stuff the phone in your pocket the jack is at the top without flipping the phone around first.

      1. He may actually be able to do that. Some men have abnormally large appendages. One wouldn’t care to deny their special concerns, especially as Apple has been so painstaking in their service to those with special needs. As a person with small hands, I am quite happy with the design of the 4S—the 5 is something of a stretch—but I do understand others’ requirements, and Apple may eventually extend their spectrum of models to serve them.

  1. Even more embarrassing than the embarrassingly large phablets is the embarassingly un-shatterproof screens on those cheap plastic toy-like devices. Every Galaxy Phablet i’ve seen in public is either broken or shattered.

    1. Well, if you’re getting sick of what the analysts say, don’t read MacDailyNews. While this site conglomerates what analysts all over the world are saying, by just reading or listening to normal media you will hardly ever come across an analyst’s views on Apple. Problem solved.

  2. Analysts need to analyze themselves first. There should be a rating system for theses analysts who are really becoming relied on for information which is apparently not accurate and misleading. I equate them to a Consumer Reports where Consumer Reports is not qualified to analyze nor are they keen to the obvious in some of their tests. Otherwise, the analysts need to be more honest and offer their opinions as such or be analysts represented by credible work and real world analysis.

Case in point, Brian White sees all the phablets being pushed at CES but does not see how dominant Apple has been in the phone/tablet market. Apple found the right formula so that the sales success is what is today. The Apple platform is always going to be solid and worth building a product legacy on while others are simply trying to fill in the gaps and are constantly reinventing their products to try to stay fresh and new thus leading to forgettable products and serious fragmentation.

Apple doesn’t need to address anything especially the dumber large screens. Apple creates its own course, thank you.

  3. Apple doesn’t “need “to do anything. And having said that, I’m finding myself waiting on upgrading my iPhone 4, hoping the next announcement will give me an option for a larger screen iphone.

I know that idea isn’t attractive to everyone, but I sure would appreciate it.

      1. Fair point. But I meant larger than that, especially in the width. I find myself squinting at tiny fonts with my 50-year-old eyes, and turning the phone landscape often just has the text reflow at the same tiny font size. The Reader button is some help, but doesn’t work on every website. For me, a larger screen in both dimesions would be a real help.

        1. @silverhawk1 have you noticed that more and more websites are using themes that break “pinch to zoom”? You are stuck with their font size, and if you rotate the phone to landscape, they reflow at the same font size. Pinching to zoom does not work.

And really, even if it did, having to scroll sideways to read each line is a pain. For me– maybe not for anyone else, and maybe not for Apple– an overall bigger screen would be a good idea. One man’s opinion.

    1. Some one who really knows what the issue truly is. I have to say its been amazing for in my own life to stop listening to these AnalCysts for all my investments. I guess unless its frozen orange juice or pork bellies these analcysts jack asses are completely clueless or worse on the take.
What a huge difference it makes for me to do my own research based on numbers, data and without biases from some hack.
I inform others to do the same. As with everything else the news in this country sucks. Now so does the financial info from biased and/or on the take or stupid writers.

    1. The iPad mini with a cell phone radio built in would be useful for some people. Many people already just use a BT headset instead of holding the phone up to their ear. Put this capability into an iPad mini and now you can look at your data while talking. Seems useful for contractors, service guys and such who need to look at quotes, specs or schematics while talking on the phone.

  4. A smaller iPhone makes no sense at all. You need room on the screen for fingers to differentiate between positions.

I’m waiting for Apple to release the 30″ iPad to combat the new 27″ Windows touch table … er, tablet … Because analysts all agree that Apple shouldn’t cede the GigantaTablet market to Windows RT. so therefore I know it’s coming.

  5. Don’t want a larger iPhone, but smaller one – iPhone mini/nano, coupled with iPad/iPad Mini/iPad nano.
iPad nano would be more useful I think than an iPhone maxi.

    1. Smaller, cheaper, somewhat hobbled but still iOS and still startling better than any Android/ShameScam crap would be terrific. That lets all the cheap-o-holics and those with smaller budgets still use the superior technology and have bragging rights, whatever that’s worth.

Deliver the masses from the tyranny of the POS Android CrapPhone.

        1. How old are you really? I’d hazard a guess, from the quality of your English that you’re 15. Am I right?

Meanwhile, I’ve been working professionally with Macs since 1991. So please do osculate upon my prat, prat.

        2. And you’re a juvenile liar. I mean it’s flattering and all that you’ve chosen to stalk ME, of all people. But you really are a bastard. You clearly have self-loathing problems if you’re willing to go THIS FAR to upset another human being. Seek medical attention please. When you become human again I will be first in line to welcome you back to the human race. But you stay a bastard, don’t expect anything back from me but hilarity and ridicule.

  6. Ideally, my iPhone is perfect for my phone, my iPad for surfing and my mini for reading. But in Asia where economics make a single device desirable, a phablet is a single screen compromise. Apple doesn’t like to compromise but the phablet is the best solution for a limited budget where home wifi and multiple screens may not be an option.

  7. I’m a writer, and need portable writing tools. Right now, that’s a MacBook Air 11″. The iPhone is too small for writing quickly, taking notes when ideas are running fast through my mind. Impossibly small. The iPad Mini would be next best, but it can’t really fit in a pocket, and as they say, you can’t use it if you don’t have it with you. I’d love a larger sized iPhone. Something like the Samsung Note would be ideal. No one is saying this is for everyone, but it’d be great for people who need to do a lot of note-taking and writing on the go. For that, the iPhone is just the best tool for the job.

  8. Just posturing here:
I am using Siri more and more on mu iPhone to the point most of the time I don’t need typed responses on the screen – Siri answers adequately.
With even more powerful Siri, I would be able to do just about everything I need on my iPhone without looking.
If so, all I would need is a wrist phone with wifi hot spot for my iPad (whatever size) to accomplish other tasks.
Siri would come alive with a word you specify at initial setup and recognising your voice imprint, use that to filter out any other noise/voices other than yours for commands.
Probably not possible now, but would be nice in the future??

  9. Add 3G/4G LTE to the iPad Mini, and the Phone app, and voila – a phone with a 7″ screen! Makes 6″ screens look wimpy. Heck, make it an option on the 10″ iPad, for when 7″ is just not enough phone.

Add 3G/4G LTE to the iPod nano, and the Phone app, and voila – low end iphone.

And add 3G/4G LTE, phone app, and Siri to the ipod shuffle, and voila — super low end iPhone. Communicate with it hands free and eyes free, clip it to your shirt like a Star Trek communicator.

    1. Recall a visit to the Star Trek 25th Anniversary exhibit at the Smithsonian many years ago. The communicator is a bit large and heavy to wear on a shirt and if I recall correctly, worn on the belt in the TV series.

Forget that, your idea is very interesting.

What about an Apple App on all future iPads and iPods that allowed voice calling ala carte billed to your iTunes account?

  10. Here’s what I want…

Put voice into the iPads. No comments about how silly it would look held up like a phone, I never use my iPhone like that as it is… it’s always speaker phone, and/or Bluetooth.

Then… allow us to swap the activation on the fly between devices. Allow me to say that my iPad mini is now my phone, and a few minutes later say that my iPad 5 is my phone, or my iPhone is my phone.

I think Apple might have been trying to do this with their proposal for virtual sims, but the carriers were being idiots.

I’d pay good money for this.

  11. Apple will “address” embarrassingly large phones the same way they were “forced” to “address” the netbook- by obliterating them with something better- and different.

  12. It reminds me of all those times that analysts said that Apple needs to address the net book market.

Some companies may choose to sell embarrassingly ill-conceived concepts, but Apple is smarter than that.

  13. Smaller? All the analysts were just bitching for 2 years because they wanted to see it bigger. Make up your damn minds!

The 5 is big enough, any more than that and it’s just a brick in your pocket, and my kid with his Android (that he’s trying to get rid of ASAP when the contract is up) is always complaining about various pairs of pants he can’t wear anymore because the pockets aren’t big enough to hold the clunky brick of a Droid comfortably. The main idea is effortless, comfortable, portability.

  14. Jesus! The aspect ratio of the iPhone 5 is the best thing about tit! Why widen its aspect ratio to be more difficult to hold. Buy an iPad if you need big screen surfing an leave the mobile device in its environment…. Perfect!
