Samsung Electronics Co. “said it will start selling smartphones this year featuring the Tizen operating system backed by Intel Corp,” Jungah Lee reports for Bloomberg News.
“‘We plan to release new, competitive Tizen devices within this year and will keep expanding the lineup depending on market conditions,’ Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung said in an e- mailed statement today. The company didn’t elaborate on model specifications, prices or timeframe for their debut,'” Lee reports. “The new handsets will come as Samsung looks to reduce its reliance on Google Inc.’s Android operating system after the Internet search company acquired handset maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion in May.”
Lee reports, “Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported Dec. 31 that Samsung will release a Tizen-based smartphone through wireless carrier NTT Docomo later this year. The newspaper cited sources it didn’t identify.”

Talk about market confusion! I see Apple benefiting mightily by Samscum/Gaggle estrangement and the confusion of yet another mobile operating system. Everybody wants to be Apple.
Exactly – fragment the market even more and confuse the hell out of consumers. That will be nothing but a winning situation for Apple. Besides more choices, what do all these a sundry operating systems bring to the market? I see no real innovation anyplace, just chaos and thus confusion and from an enterprise side, more IT guys wasting time and money supporting all this garbage.
I wonder what Intel gets out of this Tizen device collaboration with Samsung? Samsung currently designs and fabricates its own CPUs for mobile devices.

Is Tizen an Open Source product? My guess is that it is not.
That means Samsung wont have the ability to modify the OS ala Android. Intel isn’t going to get into a patent fight (not as reckless as Google), which will strengthen Apple’s differentiation.
Intel and Samsung, both, must see Window’s Surface as a non-contender, as well as the new Blackberry OS.
You gotta love all this fragmentation of effort. The only constant that the consumer will be able to rely on is iOS. Good thing for the consumer its also the best.
