Apple not buying Waze, say multiple sources

“Yesterday, we ran a big story: Is Apple Plotting A Route To A Waze Acquisition? Rumours On The Road Point To Yes,” MG Siegler reports for TechCrunch.

“That’s huge news for a few reasons: Apple rarely makes startup acquisitions — Waze is a hot startup with good buzz — the Apple Maps fiasco — the list goes on,” Siegler reports. “But there’s just one little problem: the deal isn’t actually happening.”

Siegler reports, “That information comes from multiple sources close to the situation. And while Mike Butcher also claimed multiple sources in his original post, you’ll note that he was quick to qualify the information as a ‘rumor’ (or in British parlance — Mike is English — a ‘rumour’). Because that’s exactly what it was.”

  1. I’m thinking his “sources” are shit and just made him look really stupid, OR…… his “multiple sources” are really the voices inside his head. Either way, he just ashamed himself in front of the world.

Eff’n embarrassing. I almost feel sorry for the dolt.

  2. Apple only makes acquisitions when there is a strong strategic reason to do so. Apple has the chops to engineer the majority of its needs without outside talent. And, unlike other companies, Apple certainly doesn’t need to seek inspiration from outside sources.

    1. IIRC, Apple bought the companies that created the voice recognition used in Siri, and company that had developed and patented most of the multi-touch technology.

      Just two counter examples.

  3. Makes more sense for Apple to use Waze map data, which may well be as good or better than anyone else’s. Waze’s independence may be the reason for it’s popularity and effective crowd source mapping.
