“Samsung has largely used Google’s Android operating system in its mobile offerings, giving the Mountain View, CA-based search giant access to millions of users and new data,” StreetInsider writes.
“However, all that might change in 2013. Reports out Monday have Samsung planning to launch smartphones using its Linux-based Tizen operating system. Tizen is formed from the abandonment of Nokia’s MeeGo, with Samsung and Intel working on further development of the operating system,” StreetInsider writes. “Along with smartphones, Tizen might be modified in a way to allow it to run on tablets, smart televisions, and possibly appliances in the near future.”
StreetInsider writes, “It’s not clear whether or not Tizen will make it to the States in 2013; current expectations have Samsung inking a deal with Japan’s NTT Docomo and ‘other’ vendors.”

MacDailyNews Take: This is a side effect of Google buying Motorola Mobility and the ongoing and increasing patent troubles/royalty requirements that Android faces. Google doesn’t make much from Android as it is; nobody not named Samsung is – not coincidentally, Samsung is the company that most closely knocked off Apple’s iPhone, the phone that revolutionized the market and the phone that continues to rake in the vast majority of the industry’s profits. So, Google has only mindshare to lose.
Tizen may be one of a host of Android killers – or it may not – but replacements will be actively cultivated as Android’s legal woes, inferior workarounds, and royalty payments mount.
As we’ve said many times in the past: “Google will rue the day they got greedy by deciding to try to work against Apple instead of with them.”

Android’s problem is and always will be lack of total integration of all components …. And their fragmentated OS …..
This new OS will have the same fragmentation problem …..
this is very interesting…if samsung successfully launches this, you can expect others to follow. this could be a death blow to android
What about the apps? Does Tizen have a lot of apps available, especially for tablet use? These phones would presumably be for the very low end where people wouldn’t be interested in apps.
Everyone knows how many wonderful apps are available for Linux, and how it has taken over the desktop/laptop space. The same will happen in mobile.

Even if this is true and Tizen releases this year, Samsung won’t stop releasing their extremely profitable Android phones anytime soon. Sorry to disappoint anyone, but Samsung is going to continue to release (and make a killing) off of Android for years to come.
Makes sense to me. Samsung will keep producing Android handsets until they are no longer profitable or Samsung is ready to phase in Tizen-based handsets at the expense of Android. Google is no going to like what is going to happen.
Samsung already has “Bada”, and it did not tamper with Android’s growth at all. So Tizen-thing is wishful thinking.

Already a handful Google’s ‘preferred’ partners like HTC, Samsung have early access to android builds (leaving out the rest of the smaller OEMs). ( to get early access you need to promise google certain things like using google services, not Bidu for example. android ‘openness’ is a farce.).
Samsung figures this policy will change in that Google will give Motorola only special access to android innovations and eventuallly Google will be saying : ” for the Best and Latest Android experience buy Moto Phones (vs the rest) ” as Google HAS to figure out a way to make money off android (it’s currently making peanuts out of it).
this happened to Microsoft’s Play for Sure Partners in the MP3 player field when Msft shafted them with the Zune.
Samsung is of course Well Aware (being such close partners) that Google HAS NO MORALS knowing how Google screwed it’s friend Apple and it can’t trust Googles promises to treat all OEMs equally with Motorola .
Tizen is insurance against being a SECOND CLASS android maker.
Perhaps this is for phones and tablets that don’t really need Android. Android products are not uniform in their capabilities. Some are high end, others are barely more than feature phones.
