U.S. retail sales down 3.5% in week before Christmas, online shopping up 40.4% YOY as Apple iPad, iPhone led retail shopping

“U.S. retail sales fell 2.5 percent last week from a year earlier as fewer people visited stores, retail tracking firm ShopperTrak said on Thursday,” Nivedita Bhattacharjee reports for Reuters.

“ShopperTrak, which monitors the number of people walking into stores across the United States, said foot traffic fell 3.3 percent in the week ended December 22 from last year,” Bhattacharjee reports. “In contrast, data released by IBM Benchmark showed online sales on December 26 rose 40.4 percent over 2011 and that Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) iPad drove more retail shopping than any other device.”

Bhattacharjee reports, “Traffic via iPad was at 10 percent versus 8.8 percent and 5.7 percent for Apple’s iPhone and Google Inc’s Android platform respectively, according to the findings by IBM Benchmark, which analyzes data from 500 retailers nationwide.”

  1. 10 percent versus 8.8 percent and 5.7 percent – traffic does not mean conversions – the author conflates traffic and conversions – i.e. sales – to give the impression that android was on the map this xmas season. iOS – Apple iPad and iPhone accounted for a good 25-35 percent of my clients’ online e-commerce conversions. Android was NOT a factor. No higher than 1% of gross sales – mostly less.

No purchase on Android exceeded the value of the DEVICE – EVER!
