Analyst: Apple’s iPad the most popular tablet at retail stores at end of Christmas shopping season

“R.W. Baird’s William Power this morning offers his weekly roundup of sales checks at retail regarding mobile device sales, in this case, tablet computers,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“Apple‘s iPad ‘was the most popular device according to [Best Buy and Staples] reps we spoke with,’ he writes,” Ray reports. “Power suggests that the feedback about Microsoft‘s Surface tablet computer was not encouraging from either chain… ‘Microsoft’s Surface, which Best Buy just recently started carrying, was not recommended to us by reps without us asking about it specifically. When asked about sales to date, reps noted that the device was new and indicated that early demand has been modest… We would also note that the device was in stock at every store we contacted.'”

      I’m not sure what exactly that would mean (an iPod touch that is a phone and a tablet? How big / small is it supposed to be??), but I can’t possibly see Apple further fragmenting their own product line, just to possibly appeal to a few hundred thousand fringe users with very peculiar needs.

    2. I agree. A Galaxy Note size iPhone/iPod Touch will be another monster product. I don’t know why they would want to just cede this market to Samsung, but an iPhone/iPod Touch Deluxe will sell like crazy.
