Woman photographs herself unlocking stolen iPhone

“The iPhone was stolen from the Coalition nightclub in Brighton, East Sussex, earlier this month,” Emily Kent Smith reports for The Telegraph. “But the owner had installed an app that takes a picture of anyone trying to unlock it and then sends the information back to them via email.”

“When the woman tried to unlock the iPhone her picture was taken and sent to the owner. It was then passed on to Sussex Police,” Smith reports. “It is thought the app used is iGotYa, which is activated when an incorrect passcode is entered into the keypad.”

Smith reports, “Pc Gavin Crute from Sussex Police said… ‘We don’t know that the woman is the person who stole the camera, but she obviously has had some connection with it in the meantime and I’d like to speak to her about it.'”

MacDailyNews Note: From the App Store descriptions of the two apps we found named “iGotYa,” neither seems to do what’s described above.

    1. There’s no way Apple would’ve opened an API to snap a picture on unlock. It’s pretty damn obvious this is only possible via jailbreak, MDN is just being coy given their stance that you shouldn’t JB a device that’s already perfect for all users.

    1. Really? I’m English, and I’ve never heard of the county of Sussex being a synonym for a surfeit of sex before.
Care to enlighten us on where you picked up that little gem?

    2. “In Britain Sussex means a surfeit of sex.”

Where’d you get that idea from BLN? I’m not in Sussex but close enough to it to tell you all that this claim is total nonsense.
