2012: Apple’s annus horribilis?

“It should have been another great year as Apple [AAPL] emerged from mourning the loss of its great leader, Steve Jobs, equipped with a raft of exciting new product ideas — but sadly 2012 became Apple’s annus horribilis,” Jonny Evans writes for Computerworld.

“Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, is an operations man who ‘gets’ the importance of good product design, but don’t hold that against him: he’s absolutely committed to the company he now leads, but even he must be feeling the weight of 12-months of negative publicity thrown at the firm,” Evans writes. “Even this morning the company’s mapping service is under fire as Australian police warn that its inaccuracies can place lives at risk. That’s after months of criticism for the service’s problems, criticism which led to the ouster of iOS chief, Scott Forstall and a series of public apologies by Cook.”

Evans writes, “As the company status changes from that of media darling to media whipping boy, its public profile is under attack, giving its many competitors a little breathing room. And slashing its stock values.”

MacDailyNews Take: Much ado about nothing.

Apple’s “horrible year”saw it become the world’s most valuable company as it obliterated all-time company records revenue and profits and launched new versions and models of all of it’s most popular products. More, please.

If 2012 was Apple’s “annus horribilis,” the Cupertino Colossus’ would-be competitors are doomed.

  1. Everybody’s life is at risk the minute you step out of the door. Man, quit blaming the messenger, and use some common sense. If I was heading into Death Valley in the middle of summer, I sure wouldn’t depend on a smartphone for directions.

  2. My Latin is a little rusty, but seriously, why the derision?
Evans just said 2012 was Apple’s Bad Ass year. I gotta agree, record everything, with awesome new products!

The only thing for Apple that will be (hopefully) MORE Bad Ass is to have the US manufacture of Mac Pros, and HUGE growth as the pentup demand for a Pro Thunderbolt Tower plays out in the BEST Mac sales year ever.

  3. Apple are becoming predictable. More iPad, iPhone versions of pretty much the same thing. I predict iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPad 5, iPad mini 2. Yawwwwwwwwwn. Oh and TV.
They will all be released only a few months after the previous release so that Apple can skew as much money out of the poor sods who think they will have the latest iWhatever for sometime to come.

    1. Oh boy,….. Another village bridge missing its idiot troll. Lookin’ at you Chuck. If Apple is ‘predictable’ than what are any of its so called competition?

I guess you are one of the drooling, mouth breathing troglodytes who gripe at Apple about being form over function, and yet bitch the very loudest when, regardless of what changes under the touch screen, that it can’t be a new iDevice cause it looks the same as the previous model.

Lets do a quick review, Apple doesn’t revolutionize every 6-12 months. NO COMPANY DOES.
      1998 Original iMac
      2001 iPod
      2007 iPhone
      2010 iPad
2014-2015? Who knows? Only Apple. But it will be a fun ride whatever it is!

But thanks for playing idiot troll, try again soon.

  4. Evans, is a sloppy writer.

I know of only one public apology from Cook. Also the deadly use of Apple maps, is a stretch. Let’s go look at what death Google can bring, by using their services. Again, no matter, it’s all a stretch.

He’s trying to gain fame by using Apple’s name.

    Shut it Evans.
