“As Google Inc. battles rivals ranging from Apple Inc. to Internet companies that allege it fixes its search results, Eric Schmidt has become the search giant’s peacemaker and explainer-in-chief,” Jessica E. Lessin reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“The iPhone maker has pursued numerous lawsuits against hardware makers who use Android, claiming they rip off its own designs,” Lessin reports. “Mr. Schmidt, 57 years old, recently sat down to discuss a potential antitrust suit, the Google-Apple rivalry, and whether he would consider a government post.”

Schmidt: It’s always been on and off. Obviously, we would have preferred them to use our maps. They threw YouTube off the home screen [of iPhones and iPads]. I’m not quite sure why they did that. The press would like to write the sort of teenage model of competition, which is, ‘I have a gun, you have a gun, who shoots first?’ The adult way to run a business is to run it more like a country. They have disputes, yet they’ve actually been able to have huge trade with each other. They’re not sending bombs at each other. I think both Tim [Cook, Apple’s CEO] and Larry [Page, Google’s CEO], the sort of successors to Steve [Jobs] and me if you will, have an understanding of this state model. When they and their teams meet, they have just a long list of things to talk about.
WSJ: Are Apple and Google discussing a patent-related settlement?
Schmidt: Apple and Google are well aware of the legal strategies of each other. Part of the conversations that are going on all the time is to talk about them. It’s extremely curious that Apple has chosen to sue Google’s partners and not Google itself.
WSJ: Do you see Apple’s Siri virtual assistant as a competitor to Google search?
Schmidt: Well, it’s competition. I mean, in the antitrust filings, we actually use Siri as an example of future “non-conforming to the Web” competition , which we do worry about.

If Apple were run like a certain country it would not have $150 billion in the bak, but instead would be $16 trillion in the hole, headed to $30 trillion. If Apple were run like a certain country, it’s current prices would all expire December 31st, with no rational way of determining what next years prices will be. If Apple were run like a country, every shopper would pay a different price, depending on how much income they had.
I am glad Apple is not run like a country. But rather, like a shining example of free market, Western capitalism.

How are there “record subisides” of oil companies when the oil companies are the largest payers of taxes to the state and Federal Government. I am pretty sure the oil companies, and their customers, subsidize the government, not the other way around. Now, all of Obama’s energy subisides are true subsidies, as he only gives money to companies that make no profits and which generally go bankrupt after laundering about $500 million in taxpayer dollars per company. Now, that is subsidy to complain about. Oh, coincidentally, the Obama subsidies are all to companies that are run by big Obama donors, till they go bankrupt.

The more important question is: who would want Schmidt in a government post? Aren’t things bad enough?
I am an apple nut, love the products, own almost all of them – I also read this news site regularly – in the last few days AAPL has dropped roughly 5% in market cap, down more than 20 points in heavy volume today – over the last 3 days, there have been many reputable stories out there that report new margin requirements, a 6 to 1 android growth advantage, and other stories that explain this latest stock plunge — yet you have reported NONE of them – instead, you stick to snarky, empty, juvenile comments related to competitors’ perceived failures – if you wanted to be taken seriously, you need to inform your readers with fairness and truth — unless you’d like to be referred to as the Fox News of blogs, capable of little more than easy propaganda – your inability to remove your rose-colored blinders has unfortunately led to a little informed, and thus, poorer audience. My guess is you’ll have nothing but fluff as a response.

Just like Fox News attracts people who only want to hear one side of the news, MDN attracts Apple fans. Those of us who need news about other issues related to Apple, AAPL, competitors and others, complement our news with information from other sources. The “android growth advantage”, like the similar “market share advantage” is irrelevant when the iPhone leads in all the ways that count: profits, apps sales, and internet use. We all know Android makers are flooding the market with cheap sh*tty phones. That’s not changing anything, because the people buying these phones are barely using them for anything other than making calls and texts.
The inability of fandroids to understand this simple fact explains why they remain so flabbergasted that the best apps continue to be developed for iPhone first.

Already a winner on the business front for his support and guidance to President Obama and his reelection campaign, there is growing speculation that Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is in line for an even bigger payoff: secretary of either Treasury or Commerce or a new “secretary of business” slot.
Cabinet shakeup watchers have focused on Schmidt and his Yoda status in the Obama reelection campaign, Google’s massive $1.9 million to Democrats in the election, and the administration’s efforts to quiet a potential Federal Trade Commission investigation of Google as key signs that the president wants Schmidt in the cabinet.
“Nobody’s better positioned for a Cabinet job, if he wants one,” said a Democratic strategist.
Since Obama ran for national office, Google has been there with money and advice. Way back in 2007, Obama visited Google HQ and said, “What we shared is a belief in changing the world from the bottom up, not from the top down.”
Ever since, it’s been a match made in heaven.
Schmidt stood with Obama during his first 2008 post-election press conference.
When Obama started to push for a new round of stimulus spending in 2011, Schmidt was a cheerleader. Google’s political action committee delivered $1.6 million to Democrats in 2008 and over $700,000 to Obama in the last election.
At a recent Politico breakfast, Obama Campaign Manager Jim Messina mentioned only Schmidt as his go-to guy. Schmidt was at Obama campaign headquarters on Election Day when Obamavisited.
It’s potentially good for Google too: As the FTC looks to probe Google, Obama nominated for a Republican vacancy a GOP professor with a record of fighting anti-trust enforcement and whose work was backed by groups supported by Google. On Monday, the nominee, Joshua Wright, said he would recuse himself from Google cases.
Now as speculation grows of Schmidt taking a cabinet post, critics are drawing attention to the closeness of the administration-Google relationship. “Support in 2008, plus support in 2012, plus personal counsel by Schmidt to Messina in 2012, may now equal a plum cabinet post,” said one.”
We are doomed. Schmidt is no economist and as Sec of Treas he would be a disaster looking for a place to happen. This is a true nightmare and will do nothing to help our economy. They might as well ask Steve Schmidt to take the job as he has more policy experience that Eric T. Mole.
