Top-selling iPhone 5 flanked by strong iPhone 4/4S sales

“While the iPhone 5 has been the top selling handset at the three largest carriers in the U.S., Apple’s legacy iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 handsets have also been strong performers this holiday shopping season,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“Channel checks conducted by Michael Walkley of Canaccord Genuity found that sales of the iPhone 5 have been ‘very strong’ at AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. He also indicated that international sales of Apple’s latest smartphone have been positive for the company,” Hughes reports.

“While the iPhone 5 is Apple’s top selling model, as expected, Walkley’s checks also found that sales of the legacy iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models have also been strong,” Hughes reports. “In particular, he discovered that the iPhone 4 — which is available for free with a new two-year service contract — was sold out at many stores.”

  1. That’s just because people want an Apple made dock for their mobile devices! No one wants to lay their apple devices down, taking up surface area and scratching up the faces and corners! At least that’s the rumor I’m spreading to see if apple is reading this and will decide to make a dock for the new devices so I can order a phone and iPad mini!

    1. iPhone 5 is the top-selling phone “because” people are holding out for an Apple-made dock (when they can buy a third-party dock), AND that’s the rumor you’re spreading to convince Apple to make one? Good luck with that… 🙂

    1. It’s meant to target new iPhone customers and those with iPhone 4 or older. Most iPhone 4S customers would still be in their two-year contracts. Next year’s iPhone “6” (or whatever it is called) will target them, the current iPhone 4S owners.

And no, most customers are not going to bother selling their iPhone early on eBay and apply that money to upgrade.

    2. Agreed
The 4s is the nicest phone ever and high quality made.

The iPhone 5 has a little larger display, not large enough.
The iPhone 6 should have 5″ HD Display and 4s case and
      virtual home button.

  2. You don’t get it do you… I love when people try to validate that Apple is “canabalizing” its products. What most people don’t get is that as long as you buy one of them Apple wins! Doesn’t matter which one you buy, people will still create, purchase, and distribute content. Apple’s greatest strength isn’t in its one time sale but the longevity of it’s eco system. Oh yeah, how many percent of people buy another Apple product after buying a first? 90 What percent? 😉

    1. Actually, your reasoning may be valid, but it’s too complex.

It doesn’t matter which iPhone you choose (from Apple’s perspective) because, when you include the subsidy payment from the carrier, Apple makes about the same profit per iPhone sale, no matter which model is sold…

So you are right. “Cannibalization” is irrelevant. 🙂

  3. The iPhone 4 and 4S are Apple’s answer to idiot suggestions that Appel offer a “low priced” iPhone for those that can’t afford the current model.

You would naturally expect that the “lower priced” model would be feature constrained. The older iPhone 4 and 4S satisfies that abbreviated feature element of a “lower priced” iPhone.

The current iPhone satisfies those coming off contract, for a better performing model than they currently have, and maintains iPhone’s technological lead over competing products. The current model need not (and mostly likely won’t) introduce game changing technology. It just needs to accomplish the above.

  4. I would have bought an iPhone 5 but just did not have the money. Recession in the UK and all that. So got myself and the wife an iPhone 4 each to replace my 3G and her Classic.

Apple is smart to keep temporarily poor Apple fans still on board. A beautiful phone, as well.
