Republicans, when facing a losing argument always - ALWAYS - change the subject. Have some humility.

And Republicans are more charitable to whom, exactly? Do donations to the George Bush library count? Does the Mormon $$ to recall California's Proposition 8 count? How about the Charity scam Romney set up to avoid paying taxes (and without anything actually going to charity, as it turns out: http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/10/romneys-charitable-trust-not-very-charitable)
What use is Bill Gates fortune really being put to, besides the cover stories proffered in the media?

Hey, California carries itself in Federal Taxes, as well as perhaps several other red states. The red states suck in way more Federal dollars than they blow back. The blue states pay way more than they take in. So please, red states, defect already. You hate on the Presidency and will use any trick to avoid paying your fair share and to exploit any selfish advantage.

You call yourselves patriots, but your Patriot Act restricts personal freedoms recognized in the Bill of Rights. You denigrate the President and trash our economy. Bunch of Hypocrites on the Red side.

Show me one Conservative with integrity, vigilance & introspection, who isn't reaching in with both hands grabbing as much as he can, whenever he gains power. Someone who isn't beholden to some billionaire, willing and able to speak his own mind. This person could start a conversation. You red guys just play immature ego games and shut discussion down.

Cost of labor isn't the issue. Never has been.

The desktop is not Apple's future, hasn't been since 1995 when MSFT introduced Win95. What is Apple's future is mobile, be it laptops or iOS devices.

Desktops represent less than 4% of Apple's Revenue, but consumes Foxcon production capacity that is sorely needed for mobile products. Moving iMac (and possibly laptop) production out of China frees up that sorely needed production capacity at minimal cost (mostly increased income taxes: State of California and Federal). Between them those two taxing agencies will take ~45% of the profit made assembling in the US, vs 0% in China. Add another 20% to the cost of labor for Social Security, Medicare, Federal Unemployment, State Unemployment, State Disability and Workers Compensation expenses.

Taxation has always been the factor driving manufacturing out of the US, just like it has from western Europe (especially France).

My experience with US-made Macs parallels your own. The only problem ever encountered was a bad power supply on an Xserve, repaired on-site under warranty.

But when I unpacked my new 20" iMac (Assembled in China) back in 2008, I inspected every inch of it and declared it "perfect"! I still use it today. The only problem I've ever encountered is the scroll ball on the mouse.

If the point of assembly moves to the US, many of the component suppliers will move there as well. That's what happened when several Japanese car makers started assembly in the US. Some of their suppliers also moved there to meet the car makers' "just in time" requirements.

In Apple's case, Intel and Samsung already make CPUs in the US, while Corning (provider of Gorilla Glass) is also here.

How come none of you have have seen the text: "Apparaten skall anslutas till jordat nätuttag".

That's swedish and means: The apparatus shall be connected to an earthed power outlet.

Is it customary to have instruction in non english text in the US? I doubt so...

I think this could be a pre-assembly unit. Apple most likely do several per-assembly units to find the best method for production.

Yes on the auditing (though there'll almost certainly be audits for US plants, too).

On the shipping though: Steve Jobs said part of the issue was most of the components are manufactured in Asia. Assembling there means supply chain is much shorter than if they're all shipped to be assembled in the US, and any component fixes take days not weeks to get to the assembler.
