China sentences leader of ‘iPad for Kidney’ gang to five-year prison term

“A Chinese court sentenced the leader of a gang that paid a 17-year-old boy 22,000 yuan ($3,533) for his kidney to five years in prison,” Penny Peng reports for Bloomberg.

“Nine people involved in recruiting the boy and performing the operation in April 2011 have “voluntarily” paid the teenager’s family 1.48 million yuan in compensation, according to the ruling,” Peng reports. “The gang found the boy, a high-school student in Anhui province, through an Internet chatroom, the official Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.”

Peng reports, “The teenager bought an Apple Inc. iPhone and iPad with the money given to him for his kidney, according to the report.”

MacDailyNews Take: A strange, sad, and bitterly ironic story (given that Steve Jobs created the iPhone and iPad and likely would have given anything for a healthy set of internal organs).

Most people don’t need to be told, but many teens think they are invincible, so, just in case, soapbox-time: Nothing is more important than your health! Certainly not an iPhone or iPad or anything else (outside of a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, of course… just kidding).

Seriously, nothing is worth more and even all the money in the world oftentimes can’t help, so take good care of yourselves!

So, the moral of the story is stupidity does pay.
