“This week, [Apple Senior VP Eddy] Cue faces a test of how well Apple can keep up in online services with the launch of a new desktop version of iTunes, which is expected as soon as Thursday,” Jessica E. Lessin reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“The new iTunes has been delayed a month by engineering issues that required parts to be rebuilt, according to people who have seen it,” Lessin reports. “The new version of iTunes, dubbed iTunes 11, is more closely integrated with iCloud and resembles the mobile version.”
Lessin reports, “It will allow people to stream music, movies and TV shows they have purchased from Apple from one Apple device to another via the iCloud syncing service without downloading them again. Apple has only offered the function for music in the past through iTunes Match. But computer, tablet and phone users will still have to download the file initially and pay a la carte.”

And Apple really should advertise iTunes Match. Despite the problem I’ve had with the service replacing some of my “explicit” tracks with “clean” versions, it is definitely worth it if you want to upgrade the audio quality of your library.
Much easier to delete and download the higher quality version than unbox 450+ CDs from the garage and rip them again. And although I am very obsessive about having my album art and all metadata filled in, I’m sure many would benefit from having their library properly filled in.
As long as it will be available for snow leopard ill be happy 🙂
iTunes is a freebie on windows so IT most probably will be available on Snow Leopard. However, the problem with this kind of attitude is a bit like saying, “I hope all Mountain Lion features are available in Snow Leopard”.
Wouldn’t it be great if Apple released an improved application, device, or service every month?
IOS Music app is poorly designed. Too much eye-candy…not enough functionality, especially for playlists. I believe this shift to eye-candy happened when IOS 5 made its debut. If iTunes is moving in that direction…then this upgrade will be a downgrade.
I wish there was a way to display music as a list without all the artwork. iTunes Match messed up loads of my artwork and now it just gets in the way for me.
An option to have just a list with no artwork would be a great addition.

Download it from the App Store application. Definitely redesigned.
Correction to my previous post: I did Software Update and it pulled up the App Store application, where it showed iTunes 11 was available. Sorry.
